Description:
After I posted the tune which I called 'OTTO' a couple of months ago, I've come to like it more and more. But I've often felt that I should have omitted the introductory part because it didn't give the tune justice.
I have now discarded of the introduction, as well as some other less shining parts. So this is a significantly shorter version of the same recording.
The title; because my friend Otto was listening when I invented and recorded it in a sort of long improvisation/composition session.
The photo; a closeup of a figure eight knot leaning on the jeans of my knee. Because the name 'Otto' has been associated with the number eight and in old times it was common in Sweden to give the name to the eighth child.
Hardware:
Piezo miked Yamaha APX-6NA guitar with John Pearse strings.
Yamaha AG Stomp
PreSounus Firebox
BowerBook G4

beautifully played and recorded.
Lovely stuff :-)
John Fahey sort of steps out and says hello.

Have only heard two tunes by this mr John Fahey, and yes he has some musical kinship to me even though none of the two tunes resembles this piece very much. Hope to be able to hear more from him.
Thanks a lot for a nice comment Dick! [ Reply to This ]

Clear and lovely &mdash 10/21/07 - 03:31:50 PM
I like how you switched between the major and minor notes and improvised. Really pretty playing, and the cover art is cool, too. :-) [ Reply to This ]
Curry... &mdash 10/21/07 - 05:43:03 PM
Your sensitive skilled discipline as a guitarist is so on display in this tune. I think it is more difficult to play a slow, sparse finger-style guitar piece than many would realized. Everything is out there... to hear, both beautiful harmonic notes and those less so. All I hear in you song are those of the beautiful and harmonic.
I rate this song Otto plus two!!

Surprises Within the Simple Palindrome &mdash 10/21/07 - 11:29:13 PM
There are lots of interesting surprises within this improvised piece... some melodic and some subtly discordant.
But it is adventurous and free-wheeling, evoking a number of curious moods, as if awaking from a serene daydream and finding yourself in a very complicated situation.
Very interesting piece, my friend. ;)

That's an interesting angle and a great song theme. Thank a lot for your comment! [ Reply to This ]
Soothingly deceptive start .. &mdash 10/22/07 - 03:11:26 AM
.. kinda renaissance feel.. with the odd quirky blues
riff dotted .. and do I detect a hint of Lindsey
Buckingham? .. wow man, you really start to let rip about
3/4 in .. I like that kinda 'slap-back' kinda sound
you get playing strong and with the piezo pick-ups.
Awesome as always. I'll give it 8's .. ;o) [ Reply to This ]

I continue &mdash 10/22/07 - 07:13:29 AM
to be impressed with your ability to articulate notes in different ways.Even though the song is based on just a couple of chords-it's fascinating to listen to you play...I was never sure what was going to happen next.I like the way you are playing with the major/minor tonalities back and forth.Something really earthy about this. You play with lots of feeling! Yes it's true that I haven't been here much lately. Have been been more absent from my computer than in many years due to a higher rate of real life particitpation. I regard that as a good thing.. have been too stuck in front of this screen. [ Reply to This ]

I'm always amazed that you can do this kind of thing as improvisation! And the guitar tone is so warm and rich. Your attention to these details really helps to make your music outstanding ... so every note becomes poignant and meaningful. Great stuff. [ Reply to This ]

you and otto entertained me as i washed dishes today. brother j.
how well you know the power of patient simplicity - having faith in the ability of as few as 3 strings at times to create a mood so rich, and one that seems to evolve organically. perfect ending note. my ears are so happy. they bow to you! i do too!

Commander Corianderottomander. I especially like the break into the hammer ons before you start snapping that grid and pulling those minor harmonics.

by the way... &mdash 10/25/07 - 02:13:54 AM
John Pearse strings. Is that what gives it that sound? It's a similar sound to that of my Chapman stick. Somehow perfectly in and out of pitch. Love it. [ Reply to This ]
. &mdash 10/26/07 - 01:28:42 PM
Think the strings makes some of it but the Yamaha AG Stomp is responsible for a good portion of the resulting sound.
Thank you for nice comments. [ Reply to This ]
