Description:
This came from a joke I used to make about the theme song to the Canadian Dream (to max out your debt load) based on the name of a popular song from a few years ago. This is my first song here I'm mostly happy with it although my singing is still not where I'd like it (working on it though.) I wrote the lyrics a few days ago, using a progression I wrote years ago. Originally did this with electric, but was fun using acoustic for it. Did all the guitar and bass parts, and used basic GB drum loops. Did the mix on my headphones, so that could probably use some suggestions (like everything else in this song ;-)

Lyrics:
Golden city, in a setting sun

Driving my SUV, always on the run

Going home to my big house, day is almost done

Fighting through all this traffic, gotta win the race

Crank up my CD player, some jerk is in my face

Don't care about all this s***, livin' la visa loca

TV flickers, like a caveman's fire

watchin all the re-runs, and the news told by liars

get it all on the big screen, living through the wires

gotta buy all the products, things I'll never need

watch a b-grade movie based, on a book I'll never read

Don't understand all this s***, livin' la visa loca

Don't pay a cent, for two whole years

Keep from losing faith, massage all you fears

Another loan will make me happy, oil economic gear

Gonna fly to a vacation, gonna buy a brand new car

Work 60 hours for my freedom, spend it all in the bar

Never pay for all this s***, livin' la visa loca

Great first song &mdash 09/07/04 - 10:26:36 PM
Keep it up. You have put together a good blend of
intruments to back your (somewhat tentative) good
vocals. Let 'er rip a little more while singing. You are in
the right direction.

Jack, thank you for the encouragement. I'd come to somewhat the same conclusion about my voice - but its good to hear that from someone else. Now I just have to put that into practice.

Nice social criticism lyrics and nice acoustic playing. The
drum choices seem a little busy to me, cuz the power of
protest singing may come from the directness of the
approach and the focus of the arrangement isn't on the
point of view of the singer as much as the rhythms.
Vocals could be EQd for more presence and response,
with highs to bring out the diction more. Nice song.

Tobin - thanks for the comment, didn't know anyone was still checking out this song. If I was going to take this further right now I'd use my new mic - cheap large diaphram condenser. Amazing how much more presense my voice has compared to the mic I originally used on this song. (Highly recommend a mic like that someone is recording vocals / instruments.) I'd probably also raise it a full tone or two.
