Description:
I'm not wasting time on a description this second attempt at uploading. I'm getting tired of the site being down or 'busy' with only 5 members showing (and 108 Visitors). One in three attempts fails. Does anyone else notice this?? And my download success with working MP3 files is around 60%.

If you want a description of what this mix is about, it'll be on icompositions and other sites over the weekend.

Another cool &mdash 10/28/07 - 12:06:19 AM
space you have created. This one albeit a little creepy, but it goes with the season. That breath-like sound in the right speaker is effective - it sounds ominous and raspy.

Thanks Paul,
Doug

PS I am noticing that the site seems to hang a lot in the last 2 days. Also tonight I had some downloads go down to several kb/s before they timed out. Retries seemed to be ok.

How many sites do you publish on (and how do you find the time to keep up with all of the commentary ?)

Hi Doug..... &mdash 10/28/07 - 03:09:54 AM
I publish on six or seven others, with the two sites on my description page here at MJ's getting the bulk. The others I publish on when I remember them, and that's just to do with music!! I'm all over the Internet, with this pseudonym and others.

Although I hate the format of icompositions, it's reliable and working most of the time, and I have never had a download fail and I've been a member there longer than I have here, so I've started to use that site more than I have for months, to upload mixes. Maybe I'll just drift away from here.

The time side of things and why I can do so much with so many sites is that I don't have a life and mum and dad are my only valid side track apart from work. It's not a perfect life but others have lives a lot worse.

Thanks for commenting on this mix. It seemed the right time to do a mix such as this.

Take care.

Paul.

the presence of your wonderful music on this site has brightened my life and I'm sure that of many others. If you were to drift away it would be a loss for those of us who do not participate in other sites. As you say, "Joy is contagious so infect someone". Sounds like a very good guiding principle by my reckoning.

Cheers Paul,
and Keep well,
Doug

The problem..... &mdash 10/28/07 - 12:34:18 PM
I'll be hanging around and posting stuff, provided the site is working better than it it has been for the last few months.

I access or try to access this site many times, every day, so I know more than some peope how unstable the site is. I am overly critical because other sites don't suffer anything like the downtime of this site, and if they were commercial it would be the end of them.

I try to download MP3's every time I listen to a piece of music from here but it's got to the point where today I tried 5 downloads of new songs and everyone failed. How can anyone listen to a piece and learn if they have to access the piece only via the Internet, when the site is working or is not overloaded with non-members screwing the SQL database/s access algorithms.

I've said enough so I'll finish here by saying thanks for the appreciation you've voiced for my work on here.

Take care.

Paul.

I like the time you take with building this creepy little scenario. Lots of synths, bass and the tambourine - nice voicings.

I haven't noticed much 'hangtime' at the site, but I haven't uploaded anything for a couple of months until this weekend. I hope you stick around, though. I appreciate your music and your comments on my music, too.

Hi Kristyjo &mdash 10/30/07 - 01:29:21 AM
Thanks for you kind comments.

The work to put together any of my later pieces does take time, as you say, and I'm lucky to be able to spend any time I want on my music, whilst ignoring other stuff that's relegated to 'the background' or 'out of focus'.

The problem I have with the site is it's downtime and more things added/changed without any backup/backout plan. I am a systems technician and so I appreciate servers and their idiosyncrasies but this site, up until Sunday maintenance anyway, has behaved very badly. It was a big frustration to me to try the site at 6 am, midday, 3 pm, etc.. and not be able to login any time or to find that I lost my upload, after typing in all the bits for the upload e-form.

And then the downloading of MP3's!!!! That process downloaded a file, but a RAW file. No real use to anyone. And sometimes when I tried to download again later, the same thing happened or it might work correctly.

I'll be around. Probably as much if they've fixed the existing problems without adding others. Time will tell.

Take care.

Paul

nice soundbed &mdash 10/29/07 - 10:47:27 PM
I like the repetitive simplicity of this... the percussion keeps things going, soft enough so as not to annoy, and the choice of synths lulls you into a droning trance, with a hint of dread from the grinding noises that come and go. It reminds me of some "dark ambient" music I listened to several years ago (e.g. "Numina" http://www.deepintense.com/review.php?id=231). I might suggest a teeny bit more ethereal sounds here and there to spice it up ever so slightly, possibly some low whistling wind sound or far-off harmonies wafting slowly in and out.

And Paul, add me as somebody who would sorely miss your presence and thoughtful comments and music here. And add me as somebody who's getting pretty tired of the "experimenting live" style of site maintanence here too. We software engineers know there are ways to do this testing/updating offline, and hot-swap it in. But, it is free, sigh.

ttfn,
Drakonis

Hi Drakonis..... &mdash 10/30/07 - 01:45:18 AM
Thanks for your detailed comments. I appreciate these ideas more and more (from yourself and others) as my own hearing and experience allow me to appreciate my offerings more than just uploading a 'mush of noise' masquerading as something that I hope others will find appealing.

The additions of other musical tidbits to this piece has me thinking somewhat. I'll revisit this and other tunes, but when I have more time (usually during the Christmas break).

At the moment I've moved onto something else already, so will use the musically dry periods to tinker with ideas that you and others have given me. One of my problems is not staying with a particular mix for too long. I both get bored easily or my mind races ahead with other ideas, and I blindly follow, coming up for air where I can. (My current work is on its 15th mix and that's without the full idea being recorded yet or any mastering).

And all this work is done without the aid of 'needle or pipe'.

I would call my musical creativity 'butterfly thinking' as there is method but for someone observing, they might think it random. Maybe I should have boundaries instead of searching for the infinite. Coming down to earth ALWAYS finishes with a bump.

'Onward and upward!!'

As I commented to KJ, I'll be around more or less depending on the state of 67.19.32.230.

Thanks for stopping by.

Paul.
