Description:
Another tune from the over-the-hill gang, the Goodwillys. This is a fast paced rocker about nothing in particular, or whatever one wants to read into it. Thanks to Vic and the two Mikes for joining with me as we offer up another Goodwilly song.
Turn up the volume!
Vocals, Tenor Sax, synth: Jack Miller
Guitars and mixing: Vic Holman
Bass: Mike Wark
Drums: Mike Dancy
Check out the other Goodwilly songs on artist pages of Vic, Mike Wark, Mike Dancy, and myself.
Lyrics:
Rambling on, it's plain to see
Dodging the traffic most carefully.
Treading each day, wondering how,
Sneaking up slowly, it's half over now
I can see for many miles,
How it ought to be.
I can see most anything,
When the mood is striking me.
I can see you in my dreams,
But then I awake.
And it's half over now.
Creative spark, life writing a song,
Whether it rhymes, can it be wrong?
They're screaming with pleasure, so take a bow.
Sneaking up slowly, it's half over now...
I can see for many miles,
How it ought to be.
I can see most anything,
That I want to see.
I can see you in my dreams,
But then I awake.
And it's half over now….
[Instrumental]
I can see for many miles,
How it ought to be.
I can see most anything,
When the mood is striking me.
I can see you in my dreams,
But then I awake.
And it's half over now.... it's half over now....

Hey Feter.... &mdash 10/26/07 - 09:59:01 PM
Every now and then I got to pull out the tenor and let 'er rip. If for no other reason than to practice playing my sax.
It's great to have you on board and to see that you enjoyed this song.
This is why I enjoy MJ so much. To make music with others in virtual band settings... and to share that music. Pretty cool, eh?
Thanks, my friend.

The Goodwillys... we'll be the first group to ever put out a Box Set Collection before without ever selling a single song!! Ha ha ha...
Traveling music, eh? I think you got that right. This does fit into the kind of music I like to listen to when on a long road trip.

Always good fun jamming with my fellow fogeys!

Well... &mdash 10/26/07 - 10:52:17 PM
you started this "old folk's home group." And, apparently your grinding bass set the mood for this song... taking it into rock territory. That is what I love about doing a collaboration.... the song takes a form not necessarily envisioned by the one starting the tune.
Thanks, Mike of Wark.

Funny when this first started I thought is was going to be a pop type of thing. But when our Mikes kicked into this, it went into overdrive.

a song about nothing in particular... or about whatever one wants to read into it... half over now... many applications, even for the 90% crowd. LOL
Thanks for stopping in my friend... I still hope to get back to those tracks you sent me.

It's a very catchy, enjoyeable song .. and er .. I enjoyed it .. surprisingly enough .. cool pic :o)
Shades of a psychedelically distorted Roy Orbison .. which is very, very interesting... and slightly disturbing at the same time ;o)
Solid performances, from you Jack, Vic (catchy little 6 note run down that) and the Mikes - sweet little instrumental too.
(Mr.) Quibbles: the tail-end solo seemed a fraction too prominent in the mix .. and the ride? cymbal on the drums is a bit loud or sizzly for my tastes.
Never too old ... and apparently your eye-sight is better than mine as well ;o) [ Reply to This ]
"psychedelically distorted Roy Orbison" &mdash 10/27/07 - 06:29:26 PM
now that is quite the description. I'll take any references to dear old Roy in connection to any song I am a part of. Even a distorted Roy. He is one of my favorites. I wish he were still around.
Glad you liked the ride, apb. There is a lot of energy in this song... you might be right about the ending guitar licks... but for us hard of hearing, well.... :)
I do appreciate your kind and fun comments. Thanks. [ Reply to This ]
delightful &mdash 10/27/07 - 05:55:55 AM
Nothing like a fresh rocking tune from you guys to start my day. You are starting to sound like you've been in the same studio playing this live together. Some of this feeling comes from how the bass attaches itself to the drums, and how the acoustic guitar seals the bottom groove with its tight rhythm.
Kudos to the man in the mixing department for adding to this feeling with placing everything in the right places in the mix.
The drums sounds very good. Are they played live on a real set, or...?
The guitars is done with confidence, and I recognize your sound and style Vic. Very good.
The sax solo comes as a great addition and adds more flavor to your already cooking groove:)
You got me thinking "The Traveling Wilburys" from the first note.
Jack, your great characteristic voice sounds like it has found its comfort zone in this setting.

Old Jack can really write em. I LOVE the 60's West-Coast sound of his vocals, and the chord progression is a gas... [ Reply to This ]
Morning rock.... &mdash 10/28/07 - 11:02:21 AM
Hope the music didn't wake you up.... This one does rock pretty nicely... the two Mikes took off with it and set the tone, as you note. And yep, Vic did quite a job mixing all this. I know he worked hard to make it all work. Special kudos to him for that.
I thought the same thing on the drums... they do sound real. It blows my mind. As does the way Vic plays that guitar... the guy is a maniac.
I was glad to finally get another song up with a tenor part. This one almost didn't happen, as at first I was having trouble coming up with a solo that I thought worked. AS far as the singing... a good key with minimal range... it always helps.
Thanks for touching all the bases, thoddi!

Thanks! Not sure if you knew this, but the track I had to work with was only the guitar tracks. I tried my best to imagine what would be added after my initial drum track was done. This final was quite a pleasant surprise for me. Another nice Goodwillys tune- great job guys! [ Reply to This ]

rocking.... &mdash 10/30/07 - 07:22:14 PM
this one does explode right out of the box. Vic caught me off guard when I first heard it too. I was wondering how that would go over to the listeners. But it does set the tone for the whole song.
I was happy to get a sax solo in a song again. I like how it turned out. Nothing great by the standards of a good saxman, but it works for me.
Thanks. [ Reply to This ]
Thoddi's right... &mdash 10/28/07 - 03:30:40 PM
There's a lot of Traveling Willburys to this one... Vocals and rhythm guitars and what I just natcherly assume is Vic's Harrisonesque slide...
The drums sound nicely natural, with some good sizzle, although on my set-up it could stand to have some of the top end on the ride cymbal pulled back a little, and maybe a little more thump in the bass drum...
I also like the song itself...Neat chord progression and lyrics...
I'll actually disagree with thoddi a little bit on the mix, 'cause to me it actually seems to me to not give enough breathing space to everything. Which is, I must admit, what my criticism would be of a number of Traveling Willburys tunes, too. On my headphones it sounds a bit like "big mono" rather than full stereo, and I'd love to hear more spread and separation in the panning, and maybe some EQ-ing so that some of the various sizzling things in the mix aren't in the same frequency range...
Oh yeah, and after such a guitar heavy song, it's ultra-cool when the sax comes in..

on the lyrical meaning. Sort of in the vein of *8 Miles High*. I seem to recall being in a state of mind where *now* was only half of my conscious presence. lol
Nice work all around. Especially like much of Vic's cool-sounding guitar work and the sax solo.
Interestingly, with an orchestral bed, I believe this tune could be turned into a latter-day Moody Blues tune.

Another awesome Rocker Goodwillys!.... &mdash 11/02/07 - 12:55:16 PM
If it's half over now - there's still a lot of fun stuff left to get into before it's done. :-) Just crank up the Goodwilly's tunes and keep "dancing on the light from star to star".... :-) (the eye of the storm is the middle right?!) Loved the whole production, especially the sax. Did I spell that right? :-) Just kidding. :-)
