Description:
I have to apologise for shamelessly using Rebsie's name to draw you into this song. She only sings 4 bars but what a wonderful 4 bars :-)
I was not even going to post I wasn't happy with what I'd done but Mrs R persisted so here it is.....
This is a song by Richard Marris (of Motorcycle Girl and Muddy Fields fame).
Richard wrote the lyrics and melody and played rhythm guitar. I just sort of arranged it and did a bit of singing. Richard has also just rewritten some of the lyrics so this is not the final version.......
I wanted it be a big 12 string electric number but the 12 string guitar I ordered in September won't be delivered until December so this is what we've got.
A paean to contemporary media. Celebration? Maybe.
Many thanks to Rebsie for her saving contribution.
Lyrics:
MONSTERS © Marris
some of us want to play the zombie
let the television eat your brain
voting on the phone
sitting all alone
far beyond the reach of pain
turn yourself into frankenstein
maybe you're more the bride
but when the implants fail
and the illusion starts to fade
you wear your scars on the inside
chorus
everywhere you look there's a monster
but there's no need to be afraid
look closely in the mirror
deeper than the skin
see what your fears and frailties have made
sometimes he wants to be a werewolf
howling at the Friday night
snarling and heroic
as the silver bullet comes
he won't go down without a fight
keep yourself away from the vampires
glowing on your screen night and day
keep you glued to their fantastic lives
as they suck yours all away
chorus
everywhere you look there's a monster
but there's no need to be afraid
look closely in the mirror
deeper than the skin
see what your fears and frailties have made

I would also like to thank Rebsie. This rocks! Scary thing about this is that I saw an article about plastic surgery last night and all the frankenstein references have a more immediate meaning....
Thanks

I think it's a wonderful song. It's a great bit of writing by Richard, and your vocals and guitars are a treat. I'm very honoured to have had a walk-on part in it. [ Reply to This ]

Dick,
This was rockin. Really enjoyed your wah-wah use.
Would have even fit in well with "Rocky Horror Picture Show", that they always show halloween midnight in many of the movie houses.
Love the guitars and the "keep yourself away from vampires" break.

This is a rocking tune &mdash 11/04/07 - 07:22:42 AM
about a serious subject. I'm not sure how many songs there are about plastic surgery in the alt rock world, but I'll bet this is one of only a few. I can hear that you want to 'pump it up' a bit, and add some more stuff, but I'm glad you posted this version now. I like the little pauses in the melody line - gives us time to think about what you're singing. [ Reply to This ]

Reminds me of the Monster Mash by Bobby somebody, back a million years ago. But much more tech-sounding, also with a harder rock edge.
Your guitar work is really first-rate. I especially like the sections where the guitar plays heavy riffs, separated by a bit of silence, responding to the snare drum. I also love that guitar lead line towards the end, before the first fade-out (the surprise fade-in is genius!). Sounds a lot like the Edgar Winter Group from the 1970s. [ Reply to This ]
