Description:
My brother Gordon turns 50 on November 2nd. He lives with my Dad. Since my Mom passed away in 1992, Gordon has been there for my Dad in so many ways. They have become inseparable buddies. This song especially has meaning besides the fact that Gordon is my brother. Gordon entered life with some limitations that most of us don't have to deal with. Despite those hurdles he graduated from high school. He learned to drive. He has been the most responsible employee at Coca-Cola in Miami for over two decades. And to top it off, he makes their household work, keeps my Dad in line (LOL) and keeps him company. Add to that he is a great brother and the best Uncle/Grand-Uncle there is!

Happy 50th Birthday brother Gordon! Hope to see you soon.

Photo is of Gordon with two of my grandkids, Dominic and Julia.

Vocals, guitar, harmonica: Jack Miller

Lyrics:
Brother Of Mine

Some say he's just a man of meager means
That doesn't mean he's what he seems.
He puts his time in every day
Whether at work, at home, or play.

Chorus:
And if yo knew him you could tell
Hanging out with him is really swell.
And like you and me, he's just making his way,
This brother of mine, he's one of a kind.

They say don't judge by what you see
Looking at things falsely, outwardly.
There's more than meets the eye, I'm here to say
A lesson to be learned with him every day.

Chorus

You may wonder why I make such a deal
About my brother and how I feel.
It's just to let him know, do what I can
To communicate he's quite the man.

Chorus

His birthday is in a few days, so I am glad to get this up. I burned it on a CD and will send it to him tomorrow. But I'm also going to give him the link to this page for him to read and enjoy.

Thanks Feter!

Actually, I wish I was closer to all three of my brothers.
They are all good guys. I didn't take the picture, but since it's in Miami there's a good chance they are near a marina.

They can go their own way, do their own thing. But they're there when you need them.

Happy Birthday Gordon!

Chord changes... &mdash 10/29/07 - 05:10:24 PM
You know, they did just fall in together when I was making the song. Not that there is that much to the chord structure, but it did come rather easily. Glad to hear you think the changes fit well. And thanks for stopping in to listen...

It sounds like your brother is a really special person. It's nice that you got this done for his birthday.

I like the folksy flavor the Hohner gives this. The whole song fits together really well as a folk song, and the lyrics about your brother are right at home in the music.

"really special person" &mdash 10/30/07 - 04:20:43 PM
yes, he is. The lyrics flow out of that fact. Just a simple song... not too much to crowd the words, which you seem to agree about. Thanks for the generous comments.

I just realized.. &mdash 10/30/07 - 04:48:46 PM
...after listening through the song.. that you have just your guitar, voice and harp tootin' going on here. And I didn't miss anything. It sounds great this way. Very relaxed and hands-on. Sounds like a cool brother to have:)

Hey Gordon, if you read this.. I hope you have a great 50th Birthday. All the best to you, all the way from Norway:) And if you didn't know it.. your brother Jack is a great musician and makes good music for us to enjoy around here:)

... a happy birthday greeting... not so bad, eh Gordon?

Well, Neil makes the point in his comments, and I have to agree. I find myself most comfortable with just a guitar, something on my heart, and a harmonica.

Gordon IS a cool brother. And I am just having fun making music with and for some friends!

Thanks again, Thor.

Another good-hearted song, Jack... &mdash 10/30/07 - 08:52:06 PM
Another song with stuff like love and gratitude and appreciation in it...

I really think it's time that you harnessed the power of that guitar and harmonica, and produce something small-minded and petty. Vitriolic would also be acceptable.

Oh well.

In the meantime, best wishes to you and your brother upon the occasion of his birthday, and to, as my dad likes to say, "the whole fam damily"...

Ed

Great stuff Jack! &mdash 10/31/07 - 03:54:57 AM
Firstly, I really like the solo playing/singing side of this. I think this is where your real strength lies (as much as I enjoy collabs with you). This is just so "right" - timing is spot on, and everything gels beautifully.
As for the subject matter, well, I think you know the work I do in real life, and I know people like Gordon who have made the most of their abilities and become solid members of the community in which they live. I've worked with a boy called James who has just finished 13 years of mainstream schooling - I hewlped enrol him in kindergarten, and seeing him finish all that incredibly hard work made me so proud. I told him so today, so this song has a really special meaning for me.
Raise your glasses to Gordon and James and all the other kids who make the most of the hand they're dealt.
Top song Jack!
Neil

You know... &mdash 10/31/07 - 07:51:33 PM
... yes, you have a real window into this tune, and my brother. That's meaningful for me.

I referred to your comment "I think this is where your real strength lies" in my response to Ed. I think you are right about that.

This is a simple song in construction, with a lot to say... and with the ease of just picking up my guitar, singing, and adding some harmonica, it does the job.

I am very appreciative of your comments. Thanks.

Hurrah! &mdash 03/16/08 - 09:51:40 PM
Jack, I always find it curious when I pick a first song to listen to from an artist I have not heard before. I always seem to stumble on one that just opens their soul to me. Its never one of the frivolous tunes, but always a deep and passionate piece. This is such a one and is the first one from you I have heard. It makes me think differently about all the people I meet in my day. They are all someone's brother or father or uncle. They are someone's beloved. Someone unique and special. I pray I treat them that way.
Thank you for this,
Stephen
