Computer Blues (I don't owe no money Blues)

VERSE I
Well I was sittin' at home, kinda mindin' my own
when the mailman came to call.
He came into the yard kinda puffin' real hard,
then he let his mail bag fall.
He took out a letter and though I knew better
I signed on the bottom line.
When I opened it up and it was really abrupt
it said you know you better pay on time.
CHORUS
I got the, I don't owe no money,
the computer says I do blues.
No matter what I tell them
I keep gettin' them past dues.
I show em the check with the paid in full
then they send me a bill that's full of bull.
I got the, I don't owe no money,
the computer says I do blues.
VERSE # 2
Well the name on the bill is the same as mine
but they got the number all wrong.
My number's 22536 – 56241.
The number on the dun, hell it starts with one,
and it ends up with a two.
But it don't matter - former or latter
they're gonna get their due.
VERSE # 3
Now I wouldn't mind - if I had the time
but computers are dumb as a stone.
And the people that run em and send out dunnems
they're stupid clear to the bone.
They're deaf and blind, an outta their mind
if they think they wanna mess with me. heh
Cause I don't get mad - when I've been had
all I do is get even.
Repeat CHORUS
VERSE # 3
Well they tried to sue - for what was due,
but the judge, he saw my side.
And when the dust had cleared the price was dear,
but they said they'd abide.
Now I'm the one - who sends the duns,
and no one else gets bugged
The company's mine - and for all time,
that computers gonna stay unplugged.
Repeat CHORUS

Hey!! &mdash 10/29/07 - 10:20:06 AM
Computers don't make mistakes...PEOPLE do!!! And don't you forget it!!!
It's gittin' worse and worse...just a mindless machine chuggin' along with no regard for the living...
Well...a bit harsh. But I love this song. Raise my glass to you and everything you're saying, here. [ Reply to This ]
Yeah Bob &mdash 10/29/07 - 03:11:20 PM
It's the GIGO principle. Garbage In, Garbage Out
To quote you, "Computers don't make mistakes...PEOPLE do!!! And don't you forget it!!!"
Thanks for stopping by and having a listen. Glad you like the song. I know as sure as the world that the tune I did this to is from some other song, but for the life of me I can't think of what song. Of course it may just be similar, and that's why I think that. Oh well, it is what it is, a story song.
You said "Well...a bit harsh. But I love this song. Raise my glass to you and everything you're saying, here."
The reason it's a bit harsh is that it's one of my earliest attempts at recording my own stuff with some good recording gear, and it came out just barely okay. I did bring it into GB to tweak the mix as much as I could to get it sounding better, but there was only so much I could do.
But because of this and some of the other earlier songs, I finally figured out what it takes to arrange and record a good song.
That doesn't mean I ever done it you understand, I just learned how.
Thanks again Bob, for letting me know what you think, and the helpful comment about the harshness. Unfortunately all I have now to work with is the demo master, so without redoing the whole thing I can't do much to fix it.
See ya next time
Ed

I think Bob meant that the 'mindless machine chuggin' along' was harsh... NOT YOU! LOL, regards M [ Reply to This ]
Oooooppppssss &mdash 10/29/07 - 11:48:28 PM
I guess I'm a little sensitive about this one cause I think the tracks suck, big time. But hey, what the heck do I know, I just wrote it. It was one of my 8 other personalities that actually recorded the darn thing.
If I ever meet up with the one that recorded it I'm gonna Bitc* slap him.
Dan, errr I mean Ed. yeah that the ticket.

That's exactly what I meant. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I actually admire your delivery and production skills...quite a bit... [ Reply to This ]
Thanks Bob &mdash 10/30/07 - 04:48:37 PM
for clearing that up for me. I wasn't sure what you meant, and since I'm not all that happy with the sound of this track, I figured you were just commenting on what I was already feeling about the production values on this one.
I never take offense to comments like that anyway because those kind of comments make me sit up and take notice of how it sounds to others. Since I have some hearing loss now it can be hard for me to know how a person with "normal" ears, hears the stuff I do.
Thanks again for the kind words and for the clarification. I really appreciate the extra effort.
Your friend
Ed
p.s. The voices don't always tell me the truth, and they never talk to one another anyway, just to me, so I get a lot of conflicting information. ( lolololol ) [ Reply to This ]

Thanks Dick &mdash 10/29/07 - 03:15:56 PM
Glad this one put a smile on your face. It's one of my earliest recordings, and it shows in the production. I was learning then, as I am now, but I wasn't as far along in the process as I am now. This was done in 1991 I believe.
But thanks again for dropping in for a visit. Always nice to see your amiling face here.
Be well my friend

Thanks Feter &mdash 10/29/07 - 03:26:34 PM
Almost everyone can understand what this song is all about, and relate to it, I'll bet.
It's one of my earliest recordings in my little studio, done in 1991 I think. The quality of production on this isn't that good because I was just beginning to learn about how to arrange and record songs back then.
But it's still a fun song so I went ahead and brought it into GB for a little tweaking and then posted it here so others could at least enjoy the story.
Thanks again for your kind words Feter, they are much appreciated.

Glad you dropped by for a listen, and liked what you heard.
As I stated in my other responses this is a real early recording so the productions isn't that good, but it is kind of a fun song so I posted it anyway
Thanks again for the kind words

kind of song... I didn't stop smiling and tapping my toes all the way through.. reminds me of those George Formby songs that everybody loves. You have a great voice ED really sharp and clear and the backing is great too. Love it, regards M [ Reply to This ]

It is rather tongue in cheek if I do say so myself. But what the hell, music is supposed to be fun sometimes, hence my reply to your earlier comment.
Glad you dropped in for tea Maurice, and that you like the entertainment I had planned for the party. Thanks for the comments on my singing, greatly appreciated you can be sure.
Cheers my good fellow,
Dan -err I mean Ed, Now you've got me doing that again.

Always a pleasure to see the toast on one of my songs. Happy you stopped in for a listen and liked what you heard.
This was a fun song, and I'm having some fun with my responses. But I feel like I need to be serious sometimes, just not tonight.
Thanks again Benny for the comments and kind words. They help a lot and give me encouragement.
Be well my friend,

Very enjoyable. The rhymes and spoken delivery is pure entertainment. Your tracks are so polished and lyrics always so solid, they always delight. [ Reply to This ]
Barage Band huh? &mdash 10/30/07 - 04:27:40 PM
That's a new one, even for me. I guess maybe it means one of two things. Either I hit the target en-mass, or you had a typo.
What ever, thanks for dropping in for a visit Tobin and taking time to listen and comment on this song. I can always count on you for good comments that are helpful and constructive. And I really appreciate that you take the time to give thoughtful comments.
Again, thank you Tobin for your kind words.

Take two shots of Jim Beam and call me in the morning, that should cure that fit of laughter for you. Or not.
Thanks Davis for that comment. The whole point of the song was to have a little chuckle over some of the stuff companies can get screwed up, when using a "mindless computer" operator.
Glad you enjoyed the ride.

Glad you brought along your BeBop shoes bud.
Just so you know, even though I live in Arkansas now, I was raised in Jersey and had a lot of relatives that lived in Brooklyn way back when. Most are gone now or live on Long Island and elsewhere, but my roots go back to Brooklyn.
Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed my little rant about the state of the business world. Thanks for the nice comment.

Years ago &mdash 10/31/07 - 08:54:52 PM
I saw Commander Cody in concert. The band had tons of funny country- and western swing tunes. They were all great musicians. The funniest thing was the lead singer who played a guitar with NO strings! He was actually fingering the right chords.I thought it was brilliant.Of course the lead guitarist played all the parts-no one knew the other guy was faking.
Anyway, your song fits into that funny-but true country song category. It's a great song and your voice is fantastic as usual.

Ya know about 35 years ago I was a disk jockey on one of the little hometown country radio stations that used to dot the country side in these parts, And I had the late night show. I used to look for comedy songs to play for the audience and Commander Cody was one of the acts I used to throw on the platter to make people smile in the night. They did some pretty crazy stuff, but they were sure good entertainers.
Anyway, thanks for the kind words and for dropping in on me for visit. Always glad to so your picture on the screen.
By the way, loved your latest tune man, it's really beautiful

Glad you liked my little tirade about the impersonal nature of how businesses use computers.
It's funny that you should mention Johnny Cash. I just went to see the show "Ring Of Fire" which was about his life, and based on his music. It was a great show too, even better than I expected it to be.
Thanks for the kind words ego and for stopping by for a listen.

Check Please! &mdash 11/02/07 - 09:39:06 AM
Yeah, Ed... I, like others, can relate to the message here... Fightin' the Good Fight Against (Corporate) Bureaucratic Idiocy. ;)
I can also relate to the frustration when rescuing old recordings you can't do much to fix. The repetitive high frequency jangly guitar or keys on the left channel was making me a bit crazy. A nice acoustic guitar part would probably been as a nice alternative.
Re: the tune you can't remember... there were bunches of them that used the same basic progression (with some modifications), but the most successful was probably Arlo's *Alice's Restaurant.*
And Tobin's *Barage Band* header probably came from your own typo, listed under *Software* you used in this project. Sometimes a cigar is just... a cigar. ;)

Thanks Joe &mdash 11/02/07 - 10:57:36 AM
Oh yeah the famous Barage Band program used in WW2. I remember it well. I'm surprised none of you can remember it though.
As I said about this one, it's was one of my earliest attempts with the then new gear, and of course what I didn't say, was I didn't have the ears to go back and change it after I did it.
But as we live and grow, we learn. I keep threatening to go back to all of these and re-do them, but in reality I'll probably just move on and write some new stuff and let the past remain in the past.
And thanks too Joe for finally answering the question about what song it was that I could not remember. "Alice's Restaurant" It has been bugging me for years.
And a typo is just a typo too.
Thanks Joe for the great comments and the missing information. Glad you enjoyed the twanging guitar in you one ear. LOL
