Description:
Here's my take on Drakonis's tune Ember-Rekindled as re-imagined by Brian Eno. If only - but I tried. Be sure to check out the original and the many reinterpretations that followed.

Many thanks to Eduard for the opportunity to work with such a great track - I could have tweaked this forever. If anyone wants to run with this - feel free - but I really recommend getting the original file from Eduard.

glad you stopped by. Drak made a great point of departure. You recently "Emberred" too right? I remember laid back guitars and cool vocals.

Each spark is unique... &mdash 10/30/07 - 12:12:36 PM
This is a beautifully unique re-interpretation... I really like what you did here! Wholly different from any previous versions. There are a LOT of detailed changes I hear in this, you did a lot to this! I loved the synth voicings and variations of synths throughout, the bendy bits, the percussive rhythms added a lot. Of course, I have a couple of critiques too... at the beginning after the piano & bass play a bar, SUDDENLY everything else starts on the first beat of the next bar, and it is quite jarring... I'd have preferred stuff staged a little more. And the mix felt very dry... maybe a teeny bit more reverb would give more ambience. But other than that, this is a delicious remix! Thanks for playing!

Drakonis

Thanks for the fun Eduard &mdash 10/30/07 - 05:46:59 PM
and for the comments. I agree about maybe adding some more space/room to this. The "all fall in" start after the intro was quite intentional - though it is indeed a bit jarring. I just liked the way the 808 drums kicked in with the rest - like a lounge act turning on the backing track. I could do a few more of these.

a very large "Ohhh!" &mdash 10/31/07 - 05:26:15 PM
I get it... I finally went off to find Eno's "Another Green World", and now I hear the masterful similarity, and understand/appreciate even better what you were doing... and of course I know why you were then suggesting the New Challenge in the forums, though you have a head start :-) Very nicely done, on a new level!

Drakonis

right? I don't really have any original ideas - just attempts at living up to those I admire.

Nice one! &mdash 10/30/07 - 12:22:12 PM
There is something about this that sounds so exotic and exciting. I can't quite put my finger on what it is, but it's there.
A very cool vibe you've created here.

Very nicely done!

I think it's Drak's &mdash 10/30/07 - 05:57:29 PM
bass and sub tone writing. That and the cheesy 808 drums.

be sure to check out Eduard's original - and some of the many other versions out there. SmokeyVW recently did an orchestral one.

love &mdash 10/30/07 - 05:32:25 PM
the drums that sound as if they came from an old ladies organ. what are those? almost like Eno jamming with Martin Denny and the Art of Noise. you did a great job re-mixing this one.

[ Reply to This ]
Thanks Mike &mdash 10/30/07 - 06:59:34 PM
the drums are "analog electronic" apple loops. Sounds exactly like my old TR808 drum machine. I love Martin Denny - "Quiet Village" - good call. How about Esquivel - and Yma Sumac? There's a book in the 33 1/3 series about to come out on the making of Another Green World. I'm interested to hear what drum machines they were using at the time.

No Pussyfooting &mdash 10/30/07 - 07:06:45 PM
great album there. Might be fun to have a little Fripp/Eno fest. I could get into some style copping adventures.
Hmm - maybe it's a new challenge. Write the song that was left off...Here Come the Warm Jets - Dark Side of the Moon - Rocket to Russia. You get the idea.

slide guitar like exotical tropical
i'm thinking Tangerine now

no instruments were handled in this remix. I thought it would be cool to overdub all the parts with instruments - instead of going midi - but I didn't have the opportunity - and besides, the guitar does sound cool.

drunk is definitely a good adjective to describe this song. really great stuff, but definitely (and yet, vaguely) disoriented

but thats definitely a good characteristic for this.

sure brings back to mind some of the german electrosyth bands of the 70's that I use to listen to.

the type of thing where I should have the lights off and kicking back. Very well done and laid back. Bud. Nice take on the original.

Well, a dragon.... &mdash 10/30/07 - 09:37:39 PM
...might, under certain circumstances, be considered a sombre reptile...

I really like the incorporation of the cheesy organ rhythm box a la Eno, and the Frippertronic guitar lines, underpinned with those dark synth notes...

Being as how Another Green World is one of my favorite, life-and-mind-altering albums, I'm just enjoying the heck out of this...

Another one tonight where I'm disappointed that I can't vote on it...

Ed

Sombre Reptiles indeed. No votes necessary - love is all there is. Thanks for sharing the Eno thing - AGW was extremely influential to me as well.

Excellent version of Ember! This is a smooth track, although that beginning did make me jump a bit. Maybe it's just the level of the guitar/synth as it jumps in- ah, what do I know :P

I enjoyed listening to this one, Bud. Again, nice job!

Another lost Eno track :-)

But I don't know from which album - maybe Music for Airports?

thanks for the tip. I hear there's a new game in town you might want to check out.

I wasn't going for Sombre Reptiles or any particular Eno song - just the vibe of AGW.

Thanks for listening and commenting.

Oh! I just read your description. You are almost right on with what Brian Eno might have done with this in the late '70s. (I have the LPs) Eno might have slowed it down a bit, but the choices and types of musical accents and effects are good.

Thanks
Bill

Thanks for your comments &mdash 11/04/07 - 09:06:37 PM
you're right about the tempo - but the midi slide guitar sounded awful when I slowed it down too much - so I hit this stride. Good ears.

Well &mdash 11/04/07 - 03:35:46 PM

The synths used here are nice and what you've done with the jam is complimentary. I like the few changes in the song; they keep things interesting.

Nice all around.

Emberiffic &mdash 11/04/07 - 08:27:29 PM
I noticed the other day that you'd gone and gotten Emberized and kept meaning to get over to listen to what you'd done and, I have to admit, I wasn't expecting this and I don't really know why, because "this" is obviously something that you're really very good at and have a very organic, natural understanding of that's translating into the music really well.

The drums are really hypnotic and, after a while, start to sound organic, almost like some sort of instrument played by waterdrops. I really love the contrast of the shimmery synths with the percussion. Overall a big wow from me!

you're making me blush. I had a lot of fun with this - and when I caught the Eno bug - it just happened. Also - I spent a good 6 years working with TR808 drum machine - so it's in my comfort zone.

Organic &mdash 11/05/07 - 08:00:52 PM

there's warmth in these machines - it just takes some coaxing to get it out. That and a good dose of reverb and distortion.
