Feter (18)sojourn (1)blues (339)Iraq (35)Baghdad (4)folk (351) ()
Description:
I'll be away from recording for a while, so I wanted to put this demo up for my friend Feter.

Sojourner Blues (Feter's Song) is inspired by Feter's story of flight from Iraq to Syria and his life in the uncertain waiting room between worlds. His story as told to me is the basis for the lyrics in this song.

Neil Porter and myself will, down the road a bit, be recording and posting a full band final version.

This one's for you Feter.

Vocal, guitar, harmonica, & piano: Jack Miller

Lyrics:
Sojourner Blues

Neighborhood is boiling tonight,
No sleep to be found.
Another moment to realize, terrorized
My life is going down.

They say it's just a matter of precious time,
As the dust of hell recedes
Before I find some peace of mind.
So they say, so hard to believe.

Well, I've packed a bag, I'm moving on.
Dark sky hides me as I run.
There's no refuge in the desert tonight.
And tomorrow, just the faceless sun.

Deliverence and hope seems so far off.
Don't give me no platitudes.
Traveling west to escape the cloud
But to where, where do you find the good?

We make a dash for the border,
Sigh of relief at last.
Another land, but now a refugee.
I've burned my bridges to the past.

Sleepless night with music as my friend,
In the morning just let me sleep.
Out of place, a non-entity,
Just trying to maintain my keep.

But I know I'm not the only one.
Where there's life, there's light for sure.
Mercy that leads me, follows me home.
The blues of hope for a Sojourner.

This is &mdash 11/01/07 - 02:22:20 AM
a very lovely Dylanesque song with very emotive lyrics. I can see a film in Feters' story - guitar slung over his back. Excellent.
Cheers
Len

A film.... &mdash 11/01/07 - 08:21:49 AM
but, with the rest of the story yet to be played out. I pray for a happy ending. A dear guy, a wonderful musician. I am honored he has shared just a little of his story with me.

Len, thanks for your generous comments.

We need to keep Feter &mdash 11/01/07 - 09:16:43 AM
in our prayers. May his songs touch the hearts of the sojourners as he makes his way toward freedom. Jack, this is very moving. It makes me realize so much that I take for granted, like a roof over my head, my children whoi are all nearby, and the relative peace and safety of living where I do. Thank you for posting this. Jack. I'm looking forward to the band version. :-)

Your words &mdash 11/06/07 - 06:56:54 AM
express how I feel also. It is impossible to relate to the travail of so many. Thanks.

Very nice! &mdash 11/01/07 - 09:52:55 AM
I'll bet you'll get quite a few Dylan comparisons! I was able to sneak a listen here at work on my powerbook- sounds really good! While I enjoy the simplicity of this recording, I'll be looking forward to hearing what you and Neil do with this.

Thanks Mikey... I am looking forward to the next version also. After recording this, knowing it was a sketch, I felt so moved by Feter's story (and plight) I just wanted to post it. Good to hear from you.... take care.

The story of so many souls &mdash 11/01/07 - 06:51:12 PM
are written in your words Feter. And you Jack. You gave a graceful performance that is true to the meaning of this soulful lament.

My very best to you Feter on your continued journey through life. It is an honor to say I have known you, even if only in a small way, Your music always shines in the glory on God.

Thank you both for sharing this most poignant story in song.

TF... thanks &mdash 11/06/07 - 07:42:59 PM
I appreciate you stopping in on this song. It's simplicity does appeal to me... as a stand alone song. Still, I felt there was more that could be found in do a "larger" version. Neil is one guy who can make that happen.

powerful story... &mdash 11/06/07 - 07:45:50 PM
Hopefully the story will have another chapter that will turn the sad blues tone of this demo to one of rest and deliverance for our friend.

Thanks Bob.

A good song &mdash 11/02/07 - 07:14:29 AM
well played and sung, which can only brush the edges of what goes on in certain parts of the world. I'm sure all our hearts go out to Feter and others in his situation; a situation which we can't even contemplate. Feter is one person in our sights who I'm sure gives us all inspiration with his strong spirit and happy outlook, regards to both of you, M

Said well... &mdash 11/06/07 - 07:49:34 PM
The song barely scratches the surface of his sojourn... and most amazingly, he is one who doesn't wear his plight on his sleeve. He's an amazing fellow, summed up well in your words:

"Feter is one person in our sights who I'm sure gives us all inspiration with his strong spirit and happy outlook"

I like this already &mdash 11/03/07 - 08:39:08 PM
