blues (374)pain (56)suffering (8)barefoot (2)happy (102)mood (13)TV (22)people (19)
Description:
Maybe it's in the wrong Genre'.. I don't know, but the song is about how lucky some of us are even when things look bad for us, compared to others throughout the world. We think we've got 'The Blues' when we feel sad, but looking at online pics to illustrate this song I was left with a lump in my throat at some of the images. Out of respect and conscience for those in a lot of the images, I couldn't use them just for the purpose of illustrating a song on MJ, even though they depicted what I'm aiming at. I think you'll all know what I mean by that; they were too too moving.

Lyrics:
Chorus
Blues... so you' got the blues,
Yeah! Just walk a mile, in someone else's shoes,
Then tell me who you'd choose to be,
them or you.
You got the blues.

Verse.
Not everyone gets the Blues from love gone wrong.
Not everyone finds a way to put his pain into a song.
People fight and people love,
Pray for help from up above,
and then when it's settled down, What've you we got?
You've got the Blues.. yeah yeah it's called the blues
It's called the blues.... Ahh! yes so sad.. it's called the blues.
Chorus
Ha! Ya' think you got the blues
Just walk a mile in someone else's shoes
Then tell me who you'd choose to be,
Them or you... they' got the blues.

Verse
See the people on the TV Show, shufflin' barefoot wherever they go.
See the people with no food.. Do you think they're in a happy mood?
All their sufferin' all their pain... It's called the blues.
The blues.. you can't choose...
They've all got the blue-ues.

The blues.. ad lib.
Just walk a mile... walk a mile in someone else's shoes,
Then tell me who you think has got,
Really got the blues... the blues... choose
OOh they all got the blues... they got the blues,
Yea, yea, yea, they all got the blues
Not everyone gets the blues from love gone wrong,
Not everyone finds a way to put his pain into a song,
Pain pain... blues, blues, Blue-ues.

Wooahhh! &mdash 11/03/07 - 08:14:00 AM
That's praise indeed for me... coming from a virtuoso like yourself. I did think a few times whether or not to post this. The vocal is just in GB with the EQ for volume and tone, just a little reverb on the slider and the harmony in vocal transformer down a fourth. The guitar is on my m-audio with the 'Festival Lead' chosen from the guitar menu. I'm having a bit of ear trouble at the moment where shrill sounds trouble me and that's why I moved the backing lead about a bit, as from one speaker it was a bit much and i took the volume down somewhat becase it was just too cutting above all else. Anyway thanks again for that nice comment I'm well chuffed now, regards M

So true, Maurice &mdash 11/03/07 - 08:56:16 AM
We complain about our light and monentary problems, then we turn on the news and compare our comfortable lives with the rest of the world, and our problems don't seem that big after all. Cool vocal transformer harmony. :-)

The blues... &mdash 11/03/07 - 09:08:59 AM
...the IDEA behind your inspiration is so sad and so compelling. You are absolutely right about how good most of us have it and how little we do to help others or to even pay attention (to our governments, for instance, and how they can help make our world a better place.) You've voiced an important reflection in your text.

I very much like the vocal harmony and don't know how you pulled that off. Seems like you are using all of your software to optimum advantage and so cleverly. Very nice guitar licks throughout and an adroit use of percussion (loops?) to keep the song cooking at an even tempo. The tune stays with you because of the insistent repetition...That's the style you've chosen. My only thought would be to let a little more melody breathe in the song, but that's just my taste. ... This is mixed like a pro.
Peace (to all of us),
Paul

Thank you ... &mdash 11/03/07 - 03:48:14 PM
Paul for listening I really appreciate your comments. You're correct in that the percussion parts are GB loops; at first I only had the heavy backbeat drums until I'd done everything else and I decided that it was too morbid sounding. Then I added those bongos and it really did give it a lift or as you said (and I love the expression) kept it 'cooking' LOL; too true. Thanks also for the 'vocal' praise.... and thanks to GB LOL, regards M

Very, very good Maurice &mdash 11/03/07 - 09:58:06 AM
A tasteful treatment to a sad subject that none of us give enough attention to. Love the way you did the harmony on this and the overall feel of the piece.

Makes me wonder what the heck I'm complaining about and why. At least I can get on this Mac and take the time to create and share and just live without always wondering where my next meal is coming from. Or for that matter if someone is going to come to my little corner of the world and try to butcher me for some stupid ideology. Or worse yet, for profit.

Great piece of work here Maurice and very thoughtful. Thanks for sharing.

always being so open to other people's music Yeman. I'm pleased that you like this and the performance. The 'guitar' is a GB midi setting called 'Festival Lead', played on my m-audio keyboard. I was a bit nervous of using it with all these excellent Rock guitarists here at MJ, so I'm pleased that it sounds pass-able as a real guitar LOL, regards M

Beyond the *Pale* Blue &mdash 11/04/07 - 09:17:03 AM
Nice musical rumination, Maurice.

Yeah... we all get *The Blues* at one point or another, but mostly pale blues by comparison to many around the world. The blues they've got... on a daily basis... go WAY beyond *the pale*.

Interesting Low-Tech treatment on the vocals... reminds me of an Eventide Harmonizer effect... for far less cost. lol

Hi Joe &mdash 11/04/07 - 12:11:42 PM
Nice of you to drop in and I'm sure there's a lyric somewhere in your comment LOL ie 'blue ', 'pale blue', beyond the 'pale'' etc. LOL A few have mentioned the harmony thing, but I have used it in a few songs before, so perhaps it just suits this song better, making it more noticeable. Thanks again for your kind remarks, regards M

Dat be the blues, for shure! Nice job Movitz! Oftentimes I look at someone else's situation and go, I'm not having a bad day afterall... Looking at some of the real problems in this world is certainly a way to alter the perspective of my own little deal'y.

Now, are you playing any instruments on this - guitar/bass/drums/groove machine???

Nice groove thing ya got goin.

Macca there ain't no room for all those instruments in my little home.... so I frauded I hate to say, except for a rhythm guitar clangin' on the right and my vocal. Drums/ bongos are loops (though I s'pose I could have played bongos live) all the rest was played on my m-audio 49e. Thanks for the interest and for taking the time to listen. Nice to know that it pleased you, regards M

I like all of the parts. Listening on my PowerBook speakers, I'd ask for a little less of the vocals, and a little more of the guitar. (But it may come through differently on better speakers.)
The message is great, and you deliver it without being morbid, or laying a guilt trip on anyone.

Hi Kristyjo &mdash 11/04/07 - 07:08:03 PM
Glad you liked this , tho' I wouldn't have thought it would be your cup of tea genre-wise. Regarding the guitar; I did have to turn it down and spread it a little because against everything else in the mix, it was so shrill and cutting, so that's how I tried to baalnce it. I did have in mind the people who use earphones and if they'd had to have that one point of shrillness in one ear it would have been too much (see how considerate I am? LOL) I have some of those Creature JBL speakers with woofer and tweeters, so I tend to balance using those, Thanks again, M

Ouch! &mdash 11/04/07 - 05:07:22 PM
Your song and description kind of hurt me. Then I know I should take a step back, look to myself and try to order the emotions that pop in my mind. This song feels like it is written about my ordeals of lately, I could/am wrong, but that would be so besides the point. It is a song, thus universal! I haven't listen to the song since I am reading the lyrics and your description. It kind of hurts me, in a very fatherly way. Thank you for this lesson, Maurice. I mean this.
Love, Marc

this isn't what I was expecting at all... I too would like those guitars turned up a little. Love what you've done to your voice - I don't know why but it reminds me a little of JJ Cale. This flows really well. Hope your ear trouble sorts itself out soon. Peter

[ Reply to This ]
Hi Peter, &mdash 11/04/07 - 07:20:54 PM
I must listen to JJ Cale, but I didn't do a lot to the voice just as is, through my m-audio fast track and not very loud so used GB EQ to get some volume and a little tone, then a little reverb with the GB slider. Then duplicate track and vocal transfrmr down a fourth. You can see my reason for the guitar volume above in my answer to Kristyjo so I'm pleased that you were suprised LOL and liked it... that's a good thing LOL, Thanks for calling, regards M

dropping in and listening Dave... and for the compliments. It rings very true. Even the best off among us seems to find something to complain about when there are those of us who have a more peaceful existance with very little.

I like the voice manipulation on this song. It almost sounds like a guitar singing.

Gratitude &mdash 11/06/07 - 03:23:50 PM
I love the theme and emotion behind this song. Gratitude. We could use a lot more of it in this country. Here is a disturbing fact I learned the other day: Did you know that only 5% of the US population holds a passport! That means that only 5% of the people in this country have ever even been OUTSIDE IT! Explains quite a bit when it comes to our myopic foreign policy and lack empathy for the rest of the world. Thanks for this gem. Nice tone on the vocal, very original.

Hi Philip.. &mdash 11/06/07 - 04:53:31 PM
Thanks for calling and listening. It's obvious that you've considered these problems yourself, judging by your strong comment. 5% seems a small number, but then again when you look at how many people there are in the States, it's still a lot of people, but does seem only a small amount in comparison, as you say. I watched a discussion program on Sunday morning though where it was stated that America gives more to the third world per person than anyone else, but I must say I was suprised really, that Britain wasn't on an equal footing as a donor to charities. Well thanks again Philip for your words, regards M

this is a song that could have been very good but ordinary if it had not been for the bold choices you made in the production of this. The vocal treatment and the laying back of the counter melody with the guitar are unusual but take this song to another level. Good stuff.

Steve, i thought of you when I was doing this song, firstly I'd thought of asking you to do a guitar thing and then I thought the vocal would also suit you. I didn't like to ask though, so I went ahead and though you say you like my voice ( I'm well pleased about that believe me), it needed more body for this song especially with all the backing hence the harmony. That's why I thought about your nice rich tones sounding great on this. Thanks a lot for listening and your words, cheers M
