Keywords:
blues (372)chords (5)electric piano (12)
Description:
A mix of old and new ideas. Cut it kind of short because I do not have vocals or a lead for the main blues part. If anyone is interested in adding something here, that would be great. The title is from some old lyrics , long lost.

I tried some new things on the drums, so please let me know what you think and what could be added or changed to make them better. The drums are all hand pounded midi (except the drum roll at the end).

The bridge started out an an arrhythmic transition between the main theme and the middle theme but whenever I recorded it, it sounded awful, so I came up with the syncopated chords you hear.

The finale sounds really cool on a real piano, but I just picked up ram and the latest version of gb, so better piano software will have to wait (maybe Santa will be good to me this year ;)

Hardware:
Clavinova

Software:
gb 4

Thanks for the kind words. Glad you like the drums. Too many of the loops are too much when I only need a little percussion to keep the beat.

i do enjoy the f.rhodes sound here...drums work well also.

This Rhodesy sound seems to be a recurring theme for me, glad you like it. I find drums hard. Working in gb has given me a whole new respect for drummers!!

great playing &mdash 11/03/07 - 05:03:11 PM
There could be a little more in the drums for this as well as some bass. The playing is superb which is what I always expect from you sir.

Well made.

I hadn't thought of more bass, but the bass line in the piano is pretty simple, leaving a lot of room for a bass guitar. The drums are spare, hmmm...

Glad you stopped by for a listen and enjoyed the tune.

First: Nice picture!!!

You're the sound bed king, so its good to hear you like my drums. I do have other versions of this with many more repeats of different parts, but without something playing over the top its kind of tedious. Thanks for listening and go enjoy the new family member :)

like the song title. funny &mdash 11/03/07 - 09:21:46 PM
Cool mood piece. reminds me a bit of an old eagles song, somehow.

good job on the keyboard drums. that's the way i go.

nice job!

I'm so stupid - I just figured out what your name actually says... Duh...

I liked the big balls of blues on this, Bill! Although, it vibed as more of an interlude with a more of a cenamatic feel to me.

The first voices that popped into my head to accompany this were those of "Sisters" crooning to this in some phat and sexy fashion -

Very nice job!

Good to know the name makes a kind of sense.

I definitely agree that this has a kind of background music feel. The Sisters would add a lot to this, nice thought. Thanks

Nice feel &mdash 11/04/07 - 01:14:44 AM
with part 1 reminding me of early Alan Parsons in a bluesy mood without the clockwork snare hits (hear some Eagles too, probably Vic's influence); I really like your piano work and I think the minimalist percussion works perfectly for the overall tone you have set here. I do feel like there is weight missing at the low end to add some balance. Maybe a bass with more harmonics, maybe something else, I don't know -sorry I can't be more specific - but something to anchor the melody a bit more. I find the bridge works really well as a departure from the first section, being a fine compliment in its insistent energy and rhythm. Nice work!

Thanks for sharing,
Take care,
Doug

So, the drums are a little Eagles sounding, I can almost hear that. Alan Parsons is one of the persistent influences on my music. I have the luxury of still having the longer gb file, so I am going back to my keyboard and explore the low end and see what I can come up with. I'm glad you like the bridge, it was the hardest part.

Actually &mdash 11/04/07 - 08:54:26 AM
it is not the drums that sound like the Eagles to me, it is the syncopated rhythm of the piano and its chord progressions at the intro and just after the bridge. I think their song is I Can't Tell You Why on the Hell Freezes Over album - which is not the same, just reminiscent.

Good stuff!

Cheers,
Doug

I couldn't stand it, so I looked up the song. The Eagles do sometimes use short electric guitar chords, and like this much of their music is very loosely based on 12 bar blues. Thanks

You're up early this morning :)

Thanks for the support. The advice and encouragement here helps a lot. Next step is to get fluid in more keys, then maybe I could help out a band :)

Really nice melodies you've got going here, and the chords are different enough to be interesting in their own right. A very worthwhile piece.

I think someone could do some pretty interesting work over the top of this, also. Right now I am working on some bass lines. No deadlines though ;)

Cool track Bill &mdash 11/06/07 - 02:57:58 PM
Everything sounds great - love the drums. I don't know why - but for some reason I hear a little Jefferson Airplane here - though they weren't a keys based band - some vibe is coming through. I'll see if I can swing something on this when I get a chance.

Bud &mdash 11/06/07 - 04:35:27 PM
Jefferson Airplane fits better here despite the lack of guitars. If you could add some, maybe it would be a lost Airplane tune ;)

I like the dimension of the mix. Nice blues. Transitions have real impact. The percussion was well implimented!

Thanks for noticing the drums. I learned everything I know about drums from the MJ forums. Still hoping to round out the main part of the song.

nice piece here! &mdash 11/07/07 - 04:35:44 PM
I enjoyed this one. Very "groovy" kind of feel to it. Lots of good memories come to my mind in that piano sound. Great job. If I had any critique at all, it would only be the title. It does not seem to fit the screaming part... Oh well, I am sure you know what you are doing. Really liked it. Downloaded and faved. Thanks for sharing!

Glad you enjoyed the song. And, yes the title make no sense without the lyrics it originated from. I have no idea how to title and market music, I just call it what seems to work at the time.

Anarchy . . . &mdash 11/23/07 - 10:59:24 AM
Hmm . . . 'anarchy' is not a title that would have sprung to mind upon listening to this well-constructed piece. Lots of great ideas here for melodies, and as a basis for improv.

The slow section reminds me of certain parts of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon.

Nice chord sequences here. You've got a very good ear.

Definitely not one of my more anarchic tunes. Glad you stopped by for a listen. It is a good base for improvising, just haven't had the record button on when I've done the improvising well.

This is sweet - maybe it's just the time of the century (reunions and tours and all) but I hear John Paul Jones and the Led Zep.

Thanks so much for stopping by. And good call on the John Paul Jones, I was listening to a lot of Led Zepplin when I first conceived of this.

I just love how you use that thing man, I have one and it's sitting up against the wall. Thanks to you it will officially be coming out again, and I'm off to find a way to hook it up midi style. Speaking of which, your drumming is really really cool, love the syncopation throughout.

Deus Ex &mdash 01/20/08 - 06:20:17 PM
The Clavinova is a fine keyboard. The touch sensitivity is good. And if your's is like mine it should have midi outputs in the back for easy interfacing. I appreciate your comments on the drumming. I am hoping to use an interface with a drum pad when I am rich and famous ;)

Arrhythmic? &mdash 03/20/08 - 12:32:30 PM
Bill, I don't get such an arrhythmic feel from this, but I like it none the less; perhaps I just have a warped idea of rhythm . . . . At any rate, really cool work.

The drums are very appropriate, maybe bring them up in relation to your piano in parts of the mix or pan them away from your piano. The mix sounds kind of close together, to me. Nonetheless, the drums' syncopation at the start, then the almost punky driving, back to the syncopation is well done.

Did you quantize the MIDI notes to the song tempo after you "hand pounded" them into GB? If you did, I would go back and undo that. It would help the drums sound less mechanical, a little more human.

The stark chord movements in this are slick.

Yeah, the drums are quantized. I have to practice more if I want to take the true live take, but you make a good point.

I am very intrigued by your mixing suggestions and will try them out at home. My mixing is starting to show some lack of imagination.

Thanks for the feedback!
