Description:
Arrrggghhhh!!! These teenagers!!! Still having issues with my 15 year old son. He's just not complying. Not at home, not at school. He's not a bad kid, he's just making bad decisions and he's clearly not thinking about the outcomes and the consequences. I'm not going to give up on him...I'm still trying to talk sense to him and now, I'm even trying singing.
Lyrics:
Father To Son
by psexnyc
2007
Interlude:
Now Son...
There are some things to you
I need to say.
I know you don't want to hear them.
You prefer to do things your own way.
I love you son,
And for you I want the best.
So I made up this song
To get some things off my chest.
Chorus:
You don't know what you mean to me
I've raised you to be a king you see.
Not to break rules
Or to be played by fools
Make the right choices
To live how you choose.
Verse:
You don't want to listen to me
I just want you to be happy
But these things that you do
Like skipping class while at school
Ain't making things better
And ain't really cool.
Son you act like you got it made
That report card shows some falling grades.
To be this big man you must hit the lesson plans
And study them over and over, Dammit, it's not over.
You got to rise above this mess.
Education is not all about tests
There's some strategies here
That'll help you year after year.
If you're having some issues,
For you I am here.
Just between your Mom and Me
You're important to this family.
Keep your head in those books.
It's worth a second look.
Apply yourself to get off of the hook.
Chorus (Repeat)
Interlude:
Now Son,
I know you prefer that I give you some space.
And listen, I'm not trying to get all in your face.
I just want to be heard.
Please hold on to these words.
May they stick to you like glue.
I guess I'm trying to say 'Son, I love You'.
Verse:
You got a girlfriend I see
You're thinking about sex activity.
You're too young for this.
Put it last on your list.
There's nothing wrong with holding hands with a kiss.
You must learn to respect your body.
You don't want to impregnate nobody.
Your plate is already full.
Don't be played like a fool.
Respect yourself and have respect for her too.
Chorus: (Repeat)
Postlude:
Son,
I thank you for taking the time to listen.
Me and your Mom will keep the faith and keep wishing.
Wishing you all in the world that's good.
May you grow into the man you should. I love you Son and of you I am proud.
And I'll say it again to the world out loud.

Awesome song &mdash 11/06/07 - 08:14:20 PM
As a mom, I totally appreciate the fantastic lyrics of this song. The words are so true and should be said by every loving father in the world. Honestly, you should be so proud that you care enough to want what is best for your son, now and always. Don't give up. Your love and efforts will pay off. This is a wonderful gift of love. Hats off to you dad! You did a wonderful job. Hang in there! [ Reply to This ]
Thanks!! &mdash 11/06/07 - 08:36:51 PM
Thanks for the support Gail60. I keep talking to this kid, but I sense the "in one ear, out the other ear" deal with him. So I thought I'd mix some words with this hip-hop break beat I had been waiting to work on. Good news is, he likes the music...I don't know if he pays attention to the words though.... 172 Months &mdash 11/07/07 - 07:47:15 PM
Thanks for the comments Michael2. Finishing this song brought me a wave of relief. I felt like I purged my soul. Now I'm hoping these gray strands of hair on my sideburns turn back to their original color.
And you got a toddler, huh?? 8 months old, huhh...Just wait another 172 months and see what happens!!! [ Reply to This ]
Great &mdash 11/07/07 - 06:47:23 PM
well thought out lyrics reflecting a lot of parents anxieties. The guitar lead and the backing are excellent; so dramatic.... and you sing this very well.. excellent vocals, the spoken parts too sit very well, regards M [ Reply to This ]
Thanks Moviz!! &mdash 11/07/07 - 08:09:11 PM
I am becoming more and more comfortable with my voice. And I am starting to feel the confidence come thru. And I have you and macjams to thank for that. I just finished recording a song in GarageBand that exposes my voice like total full frontal nudity. It's just my voice, my acoustic guitar and my finger pops and that's it. I'm a little nervous at the thought of uploading it here for the entire community to check out (you know...the full frontal thing...)...but the song does represent where I am with my voice now.
Anyway, thanks for the comments!! [ Reply to This ]
Great lyrics &mdash 11/08/07 - 11:30:15 AM
Yeah, that can be a tough situation, trying to teach wisdom to your teenager. I can remember when I was 15, on the wrong track... how all-consuming were things in my life that now seem so small in the grand scheme. Your song is full of great advice and messages, and I hope they stick. [ Reply to This ]

Excellent lyrics, my friend. A thoughtful song. Try a changeup or two in tempo or chord structure. The rap interludes are good. The panning section with thin keyboard and guitar needs more work. A direct and heartfelt song. No need to mince words when we want to make tough love. Bravo. [ Reply to This ]
Thanks For The Comments &mdash 11/15/07 - 11:38:27 PM
I've tried what you have suggested, but I get stumped at the part you spoke of - the panning section with the thin keyboards and guitar. I keep listening to that section and I keep re-imagining it and I cannot "hear" anywhere within it that needs to be worked on. Any ideas? [ Reply to This ]
Really Nice Production &mdash 11/17/07 - 12:13:30 AM
Big and orchestrated sound. Killer guitar riffs. I can relate to the theme my sons only five and I'm already fearing the future. Good stuff dude.

Thanks Buck!!! &mdash 11/18/07 - 01:13:12 AM
Just wait another 10 years to see what things your son will get himself into!! Looks like I'm going to have to make a Father To Son Part 2 now, because the saga continues. My son and his girlfriend ran away this past Wednesday only to be found the next day by security personnel at the Virgin Megastore in NYCs Times Square shoplifting. Got him back at home now...he seems to be normal for the time being...but when he gets around that girl, he becomes something else...something much unlike my son.
I just gotta write another song about this! [ Reply to This ]
Great song &mdash 11/27/07 - 03:26:26 PM
and excellent lyrics. Don't despair, had the same problems with my stepson. One day he was a thoughtful and caring young lad and then overnight turned into a monster. But, then after a nightmare spell he turned overnight again into a thoughtful caring adult. I think I did that too in my time.
Cheers
Len

Great Heart of a Father.... &mdash 01/02/08 - 09:11:11 PM
Phil, you put it all out there in this song. I can feel your struggle, your love, your sense of, even, helplessness that sometimes crowds in. The words, your from the soul delivery. It almost seems an aside to talk about the music... but it is top shelf. Great guitar riffing. But as great as it is, it is simply the vehicle for your communication to your son... "Son, are you listening... learning... considering... seeing the direction of your choices? I'm not, nor ever, giving up on doing and saying what is best for you!"
Parenting... the hardest, most important, and self-giving job in the universe. Wonderful song.

I Am So Humbled &mdash 01/02/08 - 11:08:43 PM
I had hoped to reach my son with this tune....but, the very next month, he disappears for 2 days until I got a phone call to pick him up for shoplifting. Him and that girlfriend....they are trouble when they are together.
I haven't stopped talking to him or speaking with him or even listening to him. I'm trying to work with this kid as best I can. He just turned 16. Hopefully he'll outgrow this by 18 and become a productive citizen. I ain't quitting on him yet!!
Thanks for the comments Dadai!! I soooo appreciate your compassionate words.
Phil
