Description:
A couple of years ago I arranged this piece by Emmanuel Chabrier (1841-1894), originally written for piano, for concert band. Alert listeners will be puzzled that the themes from Richard Wager's tragic opera of 1859, Tristan & Isolde, are not immediately apparent, and it seems that this piece is a burlesque -- like a blast from a seltzer bottle in Wagner's face. But Chabrier was a great champion of Wagner's music, and at one performance he was seen weeping over the love-death scene, so why did he write this nutty take on it? I leave it to the psychologists and psychic profilers here to figure it out.I guess it merely demonstrates the profound (so to speak) influence of Jack Offenbach (Can-Can) on French music during La Belle Epoque. There have been no performances (yet) of this arrangement, because it's quite difficult for all players. If you know anyone who plays in a community or college band, please recommend that they visit my SibeliusMusic web page where you can watch the notes go by as the music plays. |
