Description:
Just a quickie I wrote Saturday, recorded Saturday night and mixed Sunday evening.
Lyrics:
You’re Goin’ Down
©2007 Joseph Gurner
You think you’re Wonder Woman
and I’m the Invisible Man
I know no man can please you
but I’m doing the best I can
Heaven help us mortal men
Who gaze upon your face
You smile and turn our hearts to stone
It’s really such a watse
If you went down to the Crossroads
To sell your mortal soul
The Devil would turn tail in fear
And jump back in his hole
I’m goin’ down
I’m gonna fall
I’m gonna crash right through that wall
I’m goin’ down
I’m goin’ fast
Diving in without a splash
And when I get down to the bottom
I’ll see you there
I still think I can be the one
who you’ll take home as your prize
But you leave a trail of bodies
Who have looked into your eyes
If you went up to the pearly gates
To shed all your sins
Jesus himself would laugh at you
And send you back again
I’m goin’ down
I’m gonna fall
I’m gonna crash right through that wall
I’m goin’ down
I’m goin’ fast
Diving in without a splash
And when I get down to the bottom
I’ll see you there

Rockin' the blues &mdash 11/11/07 - 09:21:21 PM
You're right. I does read like a blues tune. Thanks for your comments, Feter. I appreciate it. Thanks for listening. [ Reply to This ]
what's this, what's this... &mdash 11/11/07 - 07:40:48 PM
this is the lost neil young & crazy horse song. thats what it is. Damn and it's an excellent one Joseph.
Really has a great live presence to it as well. Whew, I enjoyed this tune. [ Reply to This ]
Channeling my inner Neil &mdash 11/11/07 - 09:27:14 PM
While SOME people seem to think I keep Neil Young tied up in the basement, it's, of course, completely untrue. :)
I'm sure the fact that I've been listening to the new Neil Young album for the past week had nothing what so ever to do with the sound of the tune either.
Thanks for listening and your comments, Vic. Maybe I should have saved this one for the Lost Songs challenge... [ Reply to This ]

Holy smokes! &mdash 11/11/07 - 08:45:42 PM
Are you channeling Neil Young and Crazy Horse or what? Or, really, kind of Neil Young and Crazy Horse with Matthew Sweet on vocals...
This is just what I wanted to hear tonight. It amazes me, jg, that you can be so tight and precise at times and then get loose like this...
Ultra cool.

Oh yeah... &mdash 11/11/07 - 08:50:18 PM
And I want to know EXACTLY how you got the guitar sound on this. DETAILS!
'Course, I don't have the requisite Les Paul, but what the heck... the whole rest of it... And the bass details... and definitely the drums, which are neatly funky...

Oh man! &mdash 11/11/07 - 09:48:39 PM
I would so totally go see Neil Young and Matthew Sweet together. That would be awesome.
This one literally was less than 24 hours in the making and actually would have been less, but I got sleep last night and went to bed before adding the bass line and mixing it. To me, it's fun putting something together so quick. It seems to give it a totally different sound than something I spend more time on. For one thing, so much of it is "one take."
The guitar sounds are different derivatives of the GB "Classic Rock" setting. I think the gain was cranked down and the reverb cranked up. Maybe a little Overdrive thrown in for good measure. Plus, different settings on the pickup switch on the LP. The bass was just one of the GB bass presents, "Modern Rock Bass" I think. And the percussion is made from chopped up bits of different "Solid 70s Drums" loops.
I'm glad you dug the tune, Ed. Thanks for listening. [ Reply to This ]
I know this woman, I'm sure of it. &mdash 11/11/07 - 11:03:10 PM
Way to go Joe. This is a pretty awesome track. Love the overall sound of it and the way you sang the lyrics. When I just read them I thought Ok these aren't bad. But when you listen to them in the context of the song, they are great. You vocal was outstanding, but for my taste a little too far back in the mix. Not much, just a little. The guitar sounds fantastic.
Great job all the way, especially considering it mostly a one take shot.
Be cool man, and keep it up.

Thanks Ed! &mdash 11/13/07 - 10:55:11 AM
The more I listen to this the happier I am with it, especially since it started out as an exercise in quickness. Sometimes things just work out better if you don't think about them too much.
Thanks for the comments. I appreciate you taking time to stop in and listen. [ Reply to This ]
I'm Telling... &mdash 11/12/07 - 06:35:52 PM
your wife! LOL
Nice tune, Joe. No need to go on and on about the NY&CH influence, but yeah, it's there... just needs a little more *oomph* on one of them guitar parts to seal the deal.
And, of course, a clothespin on your nose while singing would move the vocal towards a more traditional Neil Young sound. ;)

Unfortunately... &mdash 11/13/07 - 11:00:08 AM
...there were no clothes pins available and, for once, my sinus problems cleared up briefly, otherwise, it would have been all Neil. :)
I wonder if, to get that extra "oomph" on the guitar, I just need to take all the guitar presets in GB up to 11? Maybe that can be an option in GB 5...
Thanks for listening Joe! [ Reply to This ]

Groovy raw sound with an honest message; pleasing chord structures and guitar riffs that complement. Nice going! [ Reply to This ]
Excellent group sound = especially &mdash 11/21/07 - 07:21:16 AM
the drum production on this one. Really everything hangs so well together - and your singing is spot on. I'v got a lot to learn from you. I hear in your music what I'm striving for in mine - and I tend to work fast like you. Well done. [ Reply to This ]
