Description:
My brother willnlf got a Zoom H2 digital recorder for his birthday. So now instead of just emailing me lyrics for our songs together - he can also lay down a version as he hears it. This is the first such version with Will playing guitar and singing to the Zoom. I liked what I heard so much that I decided to work with the demo and added a little accordion, bass and percussion. I hope you all enjoy this new take on the Budwill Industries sound.
Stay tuned later in the month for our Lost Songs entry.
Lyrics:
I fell asleep in the silence
Between each quiet song
As the sun shone through the bedroom blinds
One sleepy afternoon
Stretched out on my welcome bed
After a busy day at work
The shuffle of Bob Dylan
Diz, Washington and Krall
In just those few quick seconds
Between ending note and new
I’d slip into that magic place
A dream, or none, or few
And for those precious moments
I’d leave the world behind
The warm sun like a tonic
To calm my busy mind
But then a muted trumpet
Dinah’s Since I Fell for You
Or the chords of Dylan’s bright guitar
Tangled Up in Blue
Would lift me back awake again
Like a man who has amnesia
Diana’s soft A Blossom Fell
Diz’s Night in Tunisia
Song or sleep, sleep or song
For an hour I just drifted
Along a stream of harmony
Serenaded by the gifted
Neil was there and old Steve Earle
Mingus and Chris Smither
Gillian Welch and Dave Van Ronk
Cash and Buena Vista
And which a dream and which awake
The world that I inhabit
Like Keats’ enchanted Nightingale
It’s the one that I imagine.

Will's a great writer - and has written a lot of poetry before I pulled him into this gambit. Glad you approved of the arrangement. Thanks for stopping by. [ Reply to This ]

A quiet song. Kind of sways, just like a lullaby should. Vocal is real smooth. Good job on this :)
Thanks

I give Will a lot of credit &mdash 11/13/07 - 08:01:08 PM
for his sustained performance. His guitar and vocal was laid down in one take to one track. He set the tone and tempo really well. [ Reply to This ]
Enjoyed... &mdash 11/12/07 - 08:54:29 PM
...I have always loved this particular set of chord modulations (the ones beginning each verse)...A very comfortable feeling to this song throughout. You don't muck it up with a lot of extras: just straight-forward, folksy playing and singing. I do like the occasional instrumental bridges. I wonder if a refrain or chorus would serve you well...a kind of summary of the lyrical thoughts throughout the number. It would also give you some room to breathe melodically. Just a thought. Glad I caught this number.
Peace.

I'm mostly a lyricist, dependent on brother Bud for the musical ideas. This series of chords I've been playing on my guitar for a long time, and I finally found a lyric that worked with them. Thanks for your thoughtful comments and suggestions. Working collaboratively with Bud for the last 10 months has been absolute blast. We both love the music! [ Reply to This ]

Production seems bigger and deeper. In some funny or odd way kind of reminds me of Harry Nilson - midnight cowboy track. why? I don't know. It's good that you and your brother have gone this extra step on your guys collaborations [ Reply to This ]

I'm grateful to everyone for your appreciation of Dream Song, especially regarding the lyrics and chord progression. This is my first post as a singer and songwriter (instead of just lyricist). Thanks for making it a positive experience, and thanks to Bud for his usual brilliance. [ Reply to This ]
