Description:
I remember certain partys during my teens when we were dancing interchangably to The Beatles' new white album, and to old Glenn Miller tunes. By that time I digged Beatles, Flat & Scruggs, The Animals, JS Bach, Kinks, Beethoven, Simon & Garfunkel, Andres Segovia, Glenn Miller and others.
For a couple of years I've been playfully playing around with the theme, but not until recently made a more serious functional guitar arrangement. All the time I've thought that it was composed by Glenn Miller. But a quick check showed that:
The tune is far older that Miller. It was copyrighted 1885 by the composer F. W. Meacham (1850-1895). The tune has a long history of recording and has been popular for well over 100 years. It was very popular before World War I and retained popularity during both World Wars. The first recording was a 2-minute Edison cylinder in 1903.
Hardware:
One Furch D-24 dreadnought acoustic guitar
Two Golden Age Project R1 mics
A Presonus Firebox interface
A BowerBook G4

Maaaaan.... &mdash 11/13/07 - 05:52:30 PM
You sure know how to make that guitar dance! and, like all great musicians, you make it sound so easy, which of course, it isn't.. If I close my eyes, it sounds as if you're sitting right in front of me, cool. :-) [ Reply to This ]

Music is such an interesting language for getting close. Glad to see you comment as always! [ Reply to This ]
This Is One of Those Tunes... &mdash 11/13/07 - 08:44:01 PM
that exists somewhere deep in my memory. And although this is a novel interpretation to my ears, it is immediately recognizable in this rendition... but has been given new life by your interpretation, my friend.
Just an excellent job of conceptualizing... and performing this old ditty. Much applause. ;)

Glad you recognize this. I've asked two American friends about it and no one of them seemed to recognize it. I've been wondering if the Glenn Miller was maybe more played in Sweden than in US, or if maybe he was just popular later here. Maybe we've got to get before the 60:ies on your side of the pool to get recognition. [ Reply to This ]

My husband (a band conductor and march lover) recognized this immediately. I like your swinging style (a la Miller) and thumpy bass. [ Reply to This ]

You are one of the consummate musicians on this site. Well played, well envisioned piece of music. There is a lovely "in the moment" quality to this performance. Wonderful. [ Reply to This ]
You have perfectly &mdash 11/14/07 - 10:00:11 AM
captured the mood of this song.I love the way you delay the note on "1" of the 4th measure-it kind of propels the whole thing forward. You have a wonderful laid back sense of rhythm, and your playing is exceptionally clean.
Also, your guitar sounds fantastic!Did you make up your own bass line or get it from sheet music or a recording? [ Reply to This ]
. &mdash 11/14/07 - 03:12:35 PM
It is my own bass line .. on the place where we could speak of a bass line .. in most of the tune the bass just follow basic keynote.. [ Reply to This ]
Excellent! &mdash 11/14/07 - 11:16:25 AM
Wonderfully performed. I remember listening to the Glen Miller version on my parent's albums growing up. The melody has always stuck in my head. I never knew the history behind it. I always figured it was something written during the war.
Really bright and enjoyable all the way around. Thanks for sharing this. [ Reply to This ]

Dropped D tuning &mdash 11/15/07 - 01:46:12 AM
Using the so called dropped D tuning.
The low E string is tuned down to D. [ Reply to This ]

This is amazing.
way cool
the recording is so clear and right on. sounds like you got all the hi's and lows real sounding.
and what sounds like a natural reverberation
giving the sweet sound of guitar strings being played masterfully. And recorded masterfully.
Thats a great talent you hold, and how cool for you to share it
thank you

I've heard some good pickers in my day &mdash 11/18/07 - 07:01:12 PM
but I don't think I've heard any one better. This is something I recognized as you got into it but never knew the name of until now. It's different than what I remember, but it's easily as good, maybe even better.
You have done an excellent job here in all respects, from playing to the recording, thank you for leaving the download button active.
Bravo Maestro.

OK, immediate fan for life.
humina, humina, humina.....speechless.
You were obviously NOT one of the guitar players Les Paul was talking about when he said no one knew how to play the guitar anymore......
(I, on the other hand, was)

It amazes me that a tune this old, written by someone who is not a household name, can put joy in ones heart and a smile on their face
over a hundred years later! You would make Mr Meacham proud Mr Cori.
It's truly a joy to hear you play, and what a great sound you get with your
setup. This is a little treasure! [ Reply to This ]
