I have the strong sense &mdash 11/15/07 - 01:56:42 PM
of time and distance in this piece, as though traveling through time or seeing into the future or the past in some way. Maybe the picture was a clue (duh!), but I think it extends beyond just what is depicted graphically, such as taking me through a portal into a space of softly coloured hues that carries the listener to another time or place. Memories, visualisation, teleportation, I don't know. It sets up very nicely for a development of a new theme or melody right after where this currently ends.

Great orchestral sounds and orchestration in the introduction - sounds like the style from an old movie (40s/50s ?), which then contrasts nicely with the more atmospheric sounds after going through the door. Very dreamy liquid-y feel to the vocals and the punctuation from the percussion is a well balanced and effective contrast that I find is not used often or as tastefully in these kind of pieces. I could listen to this kind of music for a long long time.

Enjoyed the journey folks! I'm really keen to see where this goes!

Doug

PS - what orchestral package was used - it sounds much better than GB!

Thank you for the very kind words!

The orchestral bit at the front was one of the loops from the Apple JamPacks--Symphony.
I had actually created an orchestral intro of my own, but ended up using it for something else!...sending me to the loop library to look for something there.
I liked the retro-feel this one had, and further aged the sound with a plug-in from iZotope called "Vinyl."

heartbeat past the door &mdash 11/15/07 - 03:28:30 PM

beyond the door.... &mdash 11/18/07 - 05:09:20 PM
I'm also looking forward to seeing where this leads as well...

Right now...I've not a clue, which is half the fun of the mystery!

Thanks for the comment :)

I agree &mdash 11/15/07 - 04:49:33 PM
with what has been said already about portals; they could be mental or etherial. In the opening orchestral one can almost see the b/w movie and hear the actors voices, until the door opens into the other realm/s. It's all so dreamlike and mentally pictorial, I love this. It really transports one to another place/s. Love to hear the end results of this fascinating piece, Regards M

The Wizard of Oz- &mdash 11/15/07 - 07:16:26 PM
was my first comparison. You do aurally what was done in that movie with b&w/color. Nice synth tracks and vocals are also great. I love what you do with that heartbeat track, and changing it up every so often.

Wonderful! &mdash 11/17/07 - 04:37:16 PM
The move between old and new is very cleverly done.

Lovely range of sounds and textures. It'll be interesting to see where this ends up.

Cheers

Delicious voices &mdash 11/18/07 - 07:46:21 AM
Great idea to use a repeating vocal as a kind of percussive track while layering up more organic voices over the top. A very fine piece in its own right, whether you decide to develop it further or not.

Let me get this straight, &mdash 11/20/07 - 02:06:28 PM
you are out for a walk on a gravelled path playing a vinyl record? - I have this issue with vinyl cracking sounds on newly made music. I think it takes a few listens to get passed the notion that there may be something wrong with my speakers (probably a phobia of mine, I know). Take that away and I am all happy! The idea is brilliant and the execution flawless - at least to my ears (and speakers) :-)

Thank you for yet another gem to download to my ever expanding MJ-playlist - soon 400 items!

If you listen carefully... &mdash 11/20/07 - 07:06:01 PM
...you'll notice that the symphonic bit starts out with no crackles at all. That 'aged effect' slowly increases and takes over the intro up to the opening door.

Think of it as travelling back in time to a portal that leads somewhere...forwards? further back?... wherever your imagination takes you.

That's one of my goals as a storyteller/musician. In a piece like this, I'm more interested in what might be than what is...

Thanks for listening and for the comment :)

left me staring &mdash 11/23/07 - 05:12:17 PM
at the rock and somewhere in the time when the rock was whole. very cool track, with lots of space. great synth choices and mix on the ethereal vocals. when it 1st started i could imagine it breaking out into an ambient showtune. that orchestal patch is amazing
