Description:
I dreamt that I was having a romantic dinner with my wife at a little club. To the right of our table there was a stage with a closed curtain. When the curtain opened, there stood on the stage a man with a brown cowboy hat and a tobacco burst strat hanging over his shoulder. As I looked at him closer, I suddenly realized who it was.

It was Stevie Ray Vaughan and his guitar. His left had rose the the guitar's neck and he fingered an A chord and began to play this heartfelt song. In the dream, I watched his guitar hand closely to see if I recognized the chords he was playing. Then he started singing, "As long as I've been loving you, one thing's remained true. You've given me more than I wanted and I thank the lord for you". I got so excited in the dream that I woke myself up before the song was over. Luckily, I keep my Ibanez acoustic guitar near my bed, so I grabbed it and tried to reproduce all that I heard and saw. I love it when I am able to bring a song I heard in my dream out of the dream and into the here and now. It does not happen often, but when it does.....WooHoo!!

I now present to you the result right here.....with a few embellishments!

As Long As I've Been Loving You
by psexnyc
2007

As long as I've been loving you
This much remains true.
You've given me more than I wanted
And I thank the Lord for you.

As long as you keep loving me
This much you should know
My loving for you is forever
Even if you go.

Sometimes I don't get it right
But the Lord knows I've tried
To give you all of me
By and by.

As long as we've been together.
This you may not be aware
I've always been by your side
Even when I was not there.

As long as we've been married
My faith has been in us
I've never broken our vows.
I've never dissed our trust.

But sometimes I can't meet you demands
And the Lord knows I've tried
By and by.

Uncanny... &mdash 11/17/07 - 07:49:30 PM
...I really can't get over how much your voice and vocal style reminds me of Lenny Kravitz. How was this recorded and what F/X are you using on the vocals?

Lenny Kravitz, Huh?? &mdash 11/17/07 - 10:43:19 PM
Thanks for the comparison!! I love Lenny (I can get away with saying that as a guy, right???)!! Anyway, people have been saying that to me about my voice and Lenny's. It's when they bring up Darius Rucker that I shudder. Nothing against Darius, I like him and all, but I like Lenny more.

The vocals and guitar were recorded directly thru the pinhole mic opening on my eMac into GarageBand 3. No amp modeling devices, no microphones with pop screens. I'm trying to get that stuff for Christmas.

The opening lead vocal has "no effect" on it, but I did apply the AUMatrix Reverb to it with some tweaking and I applied the AUGraphic EQ to it...the 10 band setting with some tweaking. And finally I used the Equalizer with the "Air Vocals" preset and then tweaked it to my liking.

The harmonizing vocal part has the GB Pop Vocals fx applied to it along with the AUMatrix Reverb.

The more emotional vocals have the GB Live Performance fx on it with the AUMatrix Reverb applied to it as well.

I guess the AUMatrix is my key to sounding like Lenny!

This has a great feel like the gritty guitar. Its sounds like you recorded this in a subway. I love that. I think Im going to repeat whats been said Lenny is in the room. your vocals are realy good and clear. Sounds like you are playing an acoustic? Well any way I enjoyed this alot thanks for sharing!

I like that subway analogy. That's a cool idea! Probably make a cool music video! And yes that is an acoustic guitar you hear!! Thanks for the comments!!

I am so glad &mdash 11/27/07 - 03:17:32 PM
that you commented on my song and led me here. I absolutely love this - a simple sounding song played and sung with great heart. You have a very soulful voice and the person that comes to mind is the great Otis Redding. You have a new fan - I hope you get your new toys for Christmas - I dread to think how good you could sound with a bit of technology behind you.
By the way - I wish I could have dreams like yours.
Cheers
Len

Wow!!! Thanks Lengold!! &mdash 11/27/07 - 08:08:12 PM
Otis Redding....That man's voice is a force beyond nature. I'm doing these voice lessons I found on YouTube. Now I'm going to be practicing even harder and longer. Thanks for listening and enjoying my tune.

I had another dream a while ago where I was playing a guitar and was able to bring the tune out of the dream. I couldn't remember the words, but I got the melody down. I'm in the process of recording it now. I hope you'll listen to it when I finally post it!!

way too cool &mdash 11/27/07 - 03:59:56 PM
raw and heartfelt. i get less of a kreavitz feel from your vocals and more of a dug pinnik from king's x sound.
production-wise, it is raw and live mic-ish, and i would love to hear a full production of this tune. it has big tune written all over it.
killer, dude, way killer.

Ahh....Full Production... &mdash 11/27/07 - 08:18:02 PM
Man, doing this song was a gut wrenching production. It took me 3 weeks to get the nerve up to upload it after I finished it.

I think I am going to have to add some gear to my production tools that will allow me more control over my sounds. My recording technique right now is more like WYPOIWYGO (What You Put Out Is What You Get Out) and then I tweak what I've captured!

Thanks for your comments!

Yup APB, I Do Know What You Mean &mdash 11/27/07 - 08:23:16 PM
At some point in this home recording hobby I have undertaken, I am going to gather up all these tunes and apply all the production techniques that you and your fellow MJers have been educating me about all this time. You guys are pushing me to become not only a better musician, but a more conscious producer. And to that end I say, "KEEP ON PUSHING ME BABY!!!"

Hmmm. That sounds like a hook for a really cool tune! I gotta flesh this out!

Thanks for the comments!!
