Keywords:
Hallowe'en (1)ghost (26)spirit (16)
Description:
Some say that as the year fades out - late in the fall with the icy finger of Winter beckoning - the distance between the spirit world and our own becomes paper thin.

This draft piece was built on top of Skean's Hallowe'en Song (thanks bro!), which I thought provided a cool foundation for something even stranger. And stranger it is. As always I'm open to comments and if anyone wants to build on top let me know!

Thanks for the inspiration! &mdash 11/16/07 - 09:06:45 AM
Yes, this was a fun collab and I really enjoyed putting a few layers on top of the interesting tones and beat you had already put together. Your music really brought out the dark side of creativity in my added tracks, and the result ended up sounding like a ghoulish psychedelic rock group in the throes of drug withdrawl.

Great to work with you bro, and keep those great tunes coming!
Cheers,
Doug

Very &mdash 11/16/07 - 05:51:09 AM
Interesting sounds in this, bringing a sense of foreboding and mystery. Very well conceived and executed under the influence of Halloween.... now if you'd taken the 'natural' meditational route to the spirit world, it might have sounded more welcoming LOL.It's an excellent atmospheric collab and very enjoyable, regards M

Thanks Maurice &mdash 11/17/07 - 10:28:49 AM
Certainly my take on spirits here is more in line with the many myths from around the world of a time of the dead as midwinter approaches, mixed with Hollywood influence and the odd remnant from a nightmare or two. As you point out, it's not a balanced philosophical look at existence through meditative insight (although now that I think of it, I may do that someday too, and it wouldn't sound like this piece!!).

Always a pleasure to hear from you, and I'm glad you liked this one.

Cheers mate,
Doug

ghoulish &mdash 11/16/07 - 09:17:59 AM
Nice imagery. You must have had fun layering in on this one. Both of you from the same graveyard? Do you only come out at halloween time?

This was fun to listen to.

Sure was fun! &mdash 11/17/07 - 10:36:23 AM
I have found in my last two pieces that starting with someone's else's inspiration was a very cool way to get going, since it struck me in a certain way and then I felt like taking it in a very certain direction. The only downside I have noticed in this process is my concern that as I add to a piece that I won't wreck what the first artist had created. Still, the fun outweighs the concern, especially if I'm careful and sensitive with what I do.

As to being from the same graveyard, I can only say the muses that helped each of us with our contributions did both come from some place in common - although I prefer not to think of it as being from a graveyard!!

Thanks for your comments and keep well!

Thinning of the veil &mdash 11/16/07 - 11:09:20 AM
This is very atmospheric with a nice selection of textures, from the melodic to the disturbing. Nice bit of collab'ing!

Thinning of the veil! &mdash 11/17/07 - 10:42:09 AM
THAT was the wording I was looking for and could not remember.

I found it interesting how I could use the way that the choir sound gets bizarre sounding, when out of the pitch range where it was likely sampled, to generate some discordant and disturbing vocal qualities to my 'spirits'.

Thanks for your comments Rebsie, I'm glad you liked this one.

All the best,
Doug

I found found that building upon the feeling of the music Skean had already put together was pretty easy after he set such a wonderful soundstage.

Nice to hear from you! All the best,
Doug

Really effective... &mdash 11/17/07 - 03:11:23 PM
...use of the polyrhythms...I shall willingly submit to the icy hand of winter, walking without fear through the paper thin wall...

Excellent, Doug...yeah!!!

That icy finger... &mdash 11/18/07 - 09:11:32 AM
The cold = death association runs very strong for so many societies, which is interesting the depths to which that permeates our collective psyche. In reality, I suppose that for winter, cold = sleeping or hibernating more often than death.

Thanks as always for the encouragement Bob! Glad you liked our efforts!!

Take care,
Doug

Hi Mark! &mdash 11/18/07 - 09:18:45 AM
Yes, I wish I had been more timely to finish this for hallowe'en, but it has been getting busier with my work taking more time, So, after hearing Skean's cool original post, I beavered away on the new tracks over many nights a bit at a time. In the end, it took a while to finish.

In any event you can put it into your spooky playlist for next year. :o)

Thanks as always for your supportive comments, and keep well!

under my covers all the way through this. Still about three quarters through something hit my head. Small price for a fun piece of music.
Best,
Charlie

Edgar Winter &mdash 11/23/07 - 11:49:19 AM
Reminds me quite a bit of "Frankenstein" from "The Edgar Winter Group" from their album "They Only Come Out At Night" from 1972. My big brother had that LP, and it rocked! Also, "Free Ride" from the same band.

Many weird and wonderful choices here. Love the changing meter feel in that organ melody about halfway through. And the panning of the organ is a nice touch.

What a terrific track! This could have been the intro to the music video "Thriller" by Michael Jackson.

Good call! &mdash 11/26/07 - 10:32:00 AM
I just had a listen to a clip from Frankenstein and I agree there are definitely some common vibes happening. Free Ride I certainly remember, and the album cover was also pretty well known at the time too!

I've been beavering away on a rock tune in the background and so when Skean's collab was posted what I was starting to express in the rock tune spilled over into this one - modified of course by the extra sounds to add the creepiness.

Glad you enjoyed this, and thanks for leaving your remarks!

Pretty dark at least... &mdash 12/14/07 - 03:12:30 PM
Nice to see you stopping by - thanks for the comments!

This was fun to layer on top of Kenta's work and to see what sounds could be stretched by morphing the standard choir sounds into something ugly and creepy.

Keep well,
Doug
