Description:
Yeah, a rock duet… couldn’t resist.
I started it a couple of weeks ago, purely with midi instruments. It didn’t sound that bad, but I asked Alan (APB) if he could redo the guitar parts with a REAL guitar. No more than two days later he sent me his lines... WOWSERS! The song became so much more alive… Big big thanks again, Alan, for being my personal pro studio musician. What a luxury…
And of course… big thanks as well to my friend Tan (Wildcat) for co-writing the lyrics and lending her voice to the song. You rock, dear!
Hope you enjoy it.
-Walt
Lyrics:
Smart, state-of-the-art, shiny and blue
Fully equipped and designed just for you
How does it feel, leather and silk
Sweeter and smoother than honey and milk
Put on your suit, oxygen’s low
But I’m raising the heat instead
Starting the engines, graciously slow
You will drive me through the sky
Make with me a spacedrive
Crazy planet ride
Don’t call my name tonight
I forget who I am this night
I will drive you to Venus
With my limousine called Mars
And I hope you’ll enjoy the ride
On this milky boulevard
You don’t need a belt, ‘cause I’m holding you tight
We’re welcomed by stars tonight
No left or no right, straight on to the light
Oh, my sweetheart, all I’m telling you
I love your car, babe, this is so true
You make me feel so safe
When you drive me through the space
Feel my steering wheel, held with one hand
Strictly obeying your captain’s command
How does it sound, roaring V-12
Full orchestration for you and myself
Take a deep breath, don’t close your eyes
‘cause there’s plenty to see outside
starting our journey to paradise
I will drive you to Venus
With my limousine called Mars
And I hope you’ll enjoy the ride
On this milky boulevard
You don’t need a belt, ‘cause I’m holding you tight
We’re welcomed by stars tonight
No left or no right, straight on to the light
Oooh, your car is so sexy
(repeat chorus)
Oooh, your car is so sexy

Just great &mdash 11/18/07 - 08:45:32 AM
Very very nice melody line, Yes Alan adds alot to the mix. He has done the same for me and my songs. Great singing and writing. Well just a real real good job!!!!! [ Reply to This ]
steve &mdash 11/18/07 - 10:07:10 AM
Thanks for popping in. Sure, Alan did a splendid job! I was blown away when he sent me his guitar lines. That's so professional... He really put some gasoline into the track, and I hope it's not the last time;-)

Go Walter! &mdash 11/18/07 - 08:52:06 AM
See, told you guitar-driven rock songs were fun and liberating. :)
It's totally different from your other stuff and brings out a whole new dimension in your voice. Fine contributions from your collaborators too. Could this be the start of a new MacJams supergroup?
I wouldn't mind a car like that either. More street cred than my rusty VW Polo... [ Reply to This ]
rebsie &mdash 11/18/07 - 10:14:16 AM
It was so much fun to do this... Yeah very liberating :-) Now it's your turn, Rebs! And like you see hereunder (Alan's comment), this guy accepts only quality products as a payment;-)
Thank so much for your lovely comment!

:o) my pleasure .. &mdash 11/18/07 - 09:42:00 AM
thanks very much Walter, all credit to your original
parts and writing skills- as you say, I really did just re-play 'em and it suited me down to the ground..
that and window of opportunity helped me deliver quickly...that style to me shows a little your 'gothic' rock influence.
I personally really enjoyed the overall catchyness of the song, solid arrangement and the imagery in the lyrics and Tanya's "sleeper"-ish poppier/punk pull additions are excellent and a fine contrast to your vocals when on her own .. and works well when combined too.
Was great to return the favour for your "oo" last
christmas ;o)
Now that vehicle beats my '95 Saab 900 SE .. but I still wouldn't want to put winter tyres on it .. or see the road tax or price of spare parts ;o)
Keep well my friends.
PS. I accept all forms of popular musician payment: stout, red wine, whisky .. should you require me again ;o) hehehehe, kidding!!

alan &mdash 11/18/07 - 10:37:48 AM
I can't thank you enough for your brilliant work, man... as well as for your quick delivery and very professional treatment.
Haha, I fooled you... that's definitely NOT my 'limousine called Mars' in the picture. But I guess you don't want to see the real one... Besides, I'm sure your old Saab has got much more sex appeal;-) (Damned, I'm way out of decency here...)
As for the payment: I couldn't agree more on that part. And I'll even add some Belgian beers to the list as well...
Thanks and thanks again!

Love It! &mdash 11/18/07 - 11:30:07 AM
I'd love to say I jumped on the limousine called Mars for the ride while I was listening to this song, but being a fan of double entendre and having done the math, I think I'll leave your limousine alone, Walter. :-) (The song art is hilarious).
I LOVE this in every way. It's just a really enjoyable listen, to start with, which absolutely can't be overrated. You're all obviously having lots of fun on this one, Alan playing with gusto, Tanja cooing, "ooh your car is so sexy," you singing in full-on seductive rock star mode, "Feel my steering wheel, held with one had, strictly obeying your captain's command." I'll bet you had a ton of fun doing the vocals for this.
I fell in love with it, the instant you sang the word, "Smart." Your accent is such a great part of your singing.
Alan, what great playing.
Ooh, this song is so sexy. [ Reply to This ]

Double entendre? What double entendre? :-) Haha, this time I enjoyed writing the lyrics as much as I performed them.
These are great and lovely words you wrote here, Lisa. I enjoyed reading them over and over again, mostly with a big smile on my face. Thanks for passing by and for your ever wonderful comment!

great intro &mdash 11/18/07 - 11:48:39 AM
The drums captured me from the start, and those guitars sounds fab. Very tasty melody choices played through the song. Reminds me of 'the edge' from U2 in some parts here. Your deep voice suits this like butter on bread Walter. Cool wildcat vox as your counterpart.
And did I mention the drums... very well put together.

Thanks so much, man... After two years of working with GB, I finally found out that there are some really cool mastering presets(!). Especially for a rock song like this, it adds some extra punch I guess. But of course, Alan's guitar performance and sound makes the whole song so much more alive, compared to my initial midi guitar parts. Thanks again, Thor...

Woooohoooo! Really enjoyed that - that was like the space mountain ride at disney.Explosive stylish, speedy and top notch production.I was never much of an 80's fan and I dunno if I'm wrong but that sounds like a retro vocal to me and if the 80's had been more like this then I'd have probably gone the other way and become.. something else!
Sexy flash n cool.
Fantastic - best song heard in ages..yeeha!

Haha... a space mountain ride at Disney. I must try that once in my life :-)
I wasn't aware the song sounds very eighties... Well, unconscious influences of my youth I guess...Anyway, it was great fun, especially with the support of my two talented collab partners.
Thanks for expressing your joy so much:-)

Switched On My MJ Player... &mdash 11/19/07 - 11:36:20 AM
and suddenly I was transported back (in this sexy car) to the late 70s/early 80s. And there was this tune playing that reminded me of different influences of that period.
Some crisp guitar licks and a bubbling male vocal reminiscent of 80s Brit Pop... then, as if Ellen Foley had dropped in for a look at the shiny *Dashboard Lights*, I'm reminded of Meat Loaf. lol
Interesting ride on the Moorlandtmobile. ;)

Alan's V-12 string guitar &mdash 11/19/07 - 05:33:23 PM
high octane music, takes me over the top! This is great fun... I will tell you that the unusual wandering chords, the rockin' guitars, the strange dreamy lyrics, and your and Tan's melodramatic singing, made this sound like a psychadelic 70's sci-fi movie soundtrack... and that is not a bad thing, it was caught me in a campy-smirky mood. Walter, your singing is always so intriguing to listen to... Tan's singing/talking fits really well in this piece too, and I think APB's guitar-work is superb, really gives some growly bite to this trippy back-seat-space ride.

'Terraplane Blues' updated... &mdash 11/19/07 - 08:43:12 PM
...to the 21st century by Ziggy Stardust...or Riff Raff....
(My first car was named Riff Raff, actually...)
This joins all those great, "it's all about my cool car" songs, from Robert Johnson to Chuck Berry and Tom Waitts and everyone else...
Great sound and it really does sound like all of you are having fun.

ed &mdash 11/21/07 - 03:01:48 PM
Riff Raff... haha, what a funny name. I can hardly imagine how that car looked like ;-)
Well, this song is not exactly about my... ahem... car (blush). Perhaps I should have checked the 'explicit' box:-) But I'm sure you got the metaphor pretty well...
Thanks for popping in again, Ed!
Walt [ Reply to This ]
Well, really... &mdash 11/21/07 - 04:07:54 PM
...listen to a lot of those old blues and rock & roll car songs, and they weren't about anybody's car, either...
Listen to 'Terraplane Blues'...or Bob Franke's 'Fuji Blues', which is NOT about a bicycle...
Yep, it was subtle, you understand, but I WAS able to figure out what you were getting at...

Good song, great playing (excellent git Alan!). The drums work well too Walt - your midi kit?
Can't imagine how this could be better - excellent vocals from you both and a very clean, pro production.
Congratulations!

Well, that was a happy little sidetrip. So glad you enjoyed it, Neil.
I must confess... those drums are nothing more than 'out of the box' JamPack loops. But I guess they work pretty well for the song. And I tried to give them some extra punch with that new visual EQ tool in GB4.
Thanks so much again Neil!

Crazy Sex Rock &mdash 11/21/07 - 01:54:20 AM
This almost has the Doors thing rather than the 80s hair metal thing. It's hard for me to pin it down exactly. "milky boulevard" seeming inadvertantly over the top (Break on Through (To the Other Side) ) rather than calculatingly over the top, i.e., Cherry Pie. My preference would have been for "chunkier" guitar rather than the bright and spangly one here. But I prefer L7/7 Year Bitch to Pat Benatar. [ Reply to This ]

Tres bon a tous les niveaux Walter, et ta voix colle bien ce rythme et ce style de musique (tout comme les autres). Alors encore une fois bravo !
