Description:
I tried to stay on a year at school but was so angst-ridden it nearly drove my mother insane and I ran away from home. When I returned, wrote this ditty and she decided reluctantly that it was probably best if I departed to music college for better or worse.Hats off to the parents of moody teenagers.Best of friends now though,18 years later.

Not to many peoples taste I wouldnt think unless you are into the golden age of cinema - Calamity Jane and such like though I'm not as talented or blonde as Doris Day

Lyrics:
A Little Bird

A little bird told me
That love's supposed to be
Like swimming in the sea
Drifting out until you lose your
Sense of dignity
But you can count on me
If a dance for two should arise then its for me and you

I really couldn't say
If this is love or nay
Well she could fly away
But I dont think that I would follow
Unless a rainy day
Washed my heart away
To travel far from home is to go wherever you may roam

If a little bird told you
Theres nothing you can do
I'm off into the blue
With no goodbye would you believe its true
If you ask why
This my reply
To travel far from home is to leave my worries free to roam

Now were rolling nice n slow
The road runs high and low
Can you hear the stream below?
It makes me wonder
If her tears will flow
I dont think so
I dont want to know
I'm as happy as a bee
In a honey tree
Its the life - for me

is a wonderfully written piece of music and the lyrics also so well written as to keep the mind flooding with images, A lovely commentary that sounds as if it's from a film or musical or a musical film for that matter. You do this type of thing so well and your voice fits in beautifully, regards M

I'm glad your'e open to different styles of music - its not much of an 'axe' tune, but might ring a few bells with people who are lucky enough to be able to drift off infront of an old film and a fire on a sunday afternoon in winter.

I am really enjoying this one. The strings and woodblock work well with the vocal.

Thanks

i'm so happy &mdash 11/20/07 - 06:58:18 PM
had to listen twice.

this has a show tune feel to it. and somehow makes me think of XTC - (is that Andy Partridge?)

thanks!

Imaginative &mdash 11/21/07 - 04:46:03 AM
I put my parents through the mill in my teenage years too ... another reason why I've never wanted children myself. I wouldn't want any little bugger doing that to me. :)

It does sound like a retro show tune. Very versatile range of musical and vocal skills you have ... I've never heard you sing like that, but you pull it off very competently. Reminds me of the kind of thing I used to hear at the cinema in the days when it only cost 12-and-a-half pence to get in.

For some reason... &mdash 11/21/07 - 11:14:12 AM
...I picture you sat around the family piano, adopting the Noel Coward accent and performing to the parents at any given opportunity (while they wonder whether or not sending you to music school was money well spent).

It probably wasn't like that at all - but - hey, I wasn't there....

Enjoyable ditty. I think you could camp it up a bit more (e.g. more Noel) on the vocal and then you'd be on Sunday Night Is Music Night on the BBC in no time. (Or was it Friday nights?) Oh I can't remember....

Phil

XTC? &mdash 11/21/07 - 04:53:03 PM
As Smokey said, this reminds me of Andy Partridge but it goes places Andy wouldn't.

Beautiful arrangement and some very solid piano playing.

Lyrics are great, innocent yet knowing.

Ever thought about a blond wig?

Cheers

Wow &mdash 11/22/07 - 04:52:30 PM
The music college did not go to waste. I see what you meant by the silouette picture (which by the time of getting to write this has been changed), it was very close to the one on my japanese dream track. Very funny.
The track is very good and jolly. Its a pleasuerable listening experience because of the jolliness. Lovely track, well done.

taking the risk of being repetitive &mdash 11/26/07 - 06:41:54 AM
I risk being repetitive here, but you are a true genious.
Never know what to expect when listening a new post from you.
But always so inventive,
This one doesn't sound like anything else I've heard at mj.
Very nice, and fun!

I'm reminded of a work called &mdash 11/27/07 - 07:46:06 AM
Floyd Collins by Adam Guetel - it's a song cycle / contemporary opera. This is really refreshing and smart. That music college paid off. Somehow - since you've been here you've morphed from busker to art song composer. The coconut hoof percussion is great. By the way - I think your version is better than what Doris would ever do - but I could hear a young Judy Garland giving this a go.

When musical westerns return to Broadway &mdash 11/29/07 - 10:08:35 AM
I think this tune could be the one that people leave the theatre humming. Nice touch with the catchy melody that seems to bounce so happily along, with one verse running smoothly into the next. Interesting key change toward the end of the verse that sets this apart from a simpler western-style song. Bravo!
Cheers,
Doug

Richard,
Not only is your music wonderfully upbeat, you carry your listener right along the road with you. You have a marvelous talent and I really appreciate it. I am going to poke around just to see what else you have in store.
Wonderful!
Stephen
