Description:
so there's this band here in LA, the Warlocks; they are awesome: The Velvet Underground, Jesus and Mary Chain and Spacemen 3 all thrown together into a big mess. and they look like the Hells Angels at Altamont. Unfortunately, it seems like everyone around them is a wreck: decadence for decadence sake. Anyways, I was thinking about a particular girl I know who is going down fast while making the scene. Wrote this on piano, but it's noisy, fuzzy, and reminiscent of the Velvet Underground. Not sure if this is the right genre for this song.

Lyrics:
It's not a feeling you wear
Like your shoes or your hair
It's not the clothes you buy
Or the books you read
Not the places you go
Or the people you meet
Not the bands that you play
Or the drugs that they take

(Chorus)
I can't live forever
I can't live this way
I can't climb a mountain
High

It's not the hows and why's
That will keep you alive
Look at you now
You've been up all night
It's not the bands you meet
Or the drugs they do
Not the records you play
Or the shoes on your feet

(Chorus)
I can't live forever
I can't live this way
I can't climb a mountain
High

Too late
She's coming down...

(Chorus)
I can't live forever
I can't live this way
I can't climb a mountain
High

Too late
She's coming down...

Really good song! &mdash 11/20/07 - 02:26:45 PM
I really enjoy your singing Michael. This has a great beat to it and very interesting lyrics. The things I used to do as a teenager - I hope and pray my teenage daughters never, ever attempt.....My oh My! I was rather mild actually, but still. :) Just the thought of what kids do today blows my mind. Michael - As always, great job!!

The genre is "michael2 magic" &mdash 11/20/07 - 04:06:13 PM
I know it's a problem - I can't find "Vic Holmanic" in the list either. Your description is right on though - definitely JAMC/Velvets. Excellent song - and great lyrics. You sure this isn't another LSP out take? Is that Edie Sedgewick in the picture?

I knew so many people who fit your description above - and some didn't make it out of the scene. Glad it's past - but my daughter turns 17 on Thanksgiving - so here we go again.

glad you like &mdash 11/20/07 - 04:35:55 PM
yes that is edie, she's a big role model for a lot of people. i guess i could have put this in the LSP, if it weren't for the vox and the slide gtr. hopefully your daughter has more of a head on her shoulders. thanks for listening.

yes it is anti-heroin (and meth too). but far be it from me to judge, this is pure commentary.

Yet another..... &mdash 11/20/07 - 04:10:59 PM
wonderful song M2.Beyond your fine skills as a song writer, crafter and player(and I truely mean that)this stirs up some heavy past experiences.A sad truth that the club/music scene so often glamorizes, promotes and produces;many a lost soul.I grew up in the bar business, operated a club,as well as performing around the Midwest,so I and can relate on many a level.A very moving tune you've written. My prayers go out to that lost girl's situation hoping for a move of God on her life.

Blessings,

thanks &mdash 11/20/07 - 04:39:53 PM
very much for the compliment and the listen. as far as music being a catalyst for self destructive behavior, guess that goes with the territory. when i was young, i desperately wanted to be authentic and have an edge that others didn't. plenty of role models to guide the way. all good now tho.

Time For A New Mac Mini &mdash 11/20/07 - 04:40:41 PM
Man! You must have the hardest working mini ever made! Apple needs to make a commercial with you stuffing all these great songs into that tiny little mac.

Another incredible song, man. This is one of my favorites of yours without a doubt.

Yeah.

is getting to be time for a new computer. this is the home computer that we all use. i need to get a laptop that I can take everywhere and record. so glad that you're into this one. it started as a piano song and I ended up throwing that away and working off the bass. thanks again for listening.

Sorry about your friend, but man. The things that our grief creates for us. The lyrics are well written and the song structure is almost like a lullaby. Nicely made.

glad you liked the song, didn't make the lullaby connection, but i can see it now. thanks for listening.

a song with a real message &mdash 11/20/07 - 07:31:30 PM
a song with a real message

reminds me of a song from '65 or so - i wish i could recall the name... it's driving me nuts. i can clearly hear the vocalist's voice in my mind, but the words are just "blah blah blah" - can't google that!

thanks

whew &mdash 11/20/07 - 10:22:25 PM
that guitar work is fabulous. the kinks in the chords where it all scrunch's up (does that make sense) is like emo thru amplification. just excellent. super job on the vox. yeah I;m jealous too everytime I see the young and depraved. I miss it

[ Reply to This ]
i &mdash 11/20/07 - 11:18:01 PM
think you're talking about the bends in the chorus. Thanks, much appreciated. The young and depraved, I love it. My neighborhood used to be all gang bangers and then it became trendy when Elliot Smith moved in down the street. Now there are all kinds of young hipsters, he's dead and life goes on. thanks for listening.

spooky &mdash 11/20/07 - 11:38:46 PM
right at the beginning I almost thought Lou. Maybe if he was a little more melodic, like you did here, he would of sold more albums. come to think of it if he had record this song he would of of had a hit. There is also a hint of the pixies here as well. Cool tune Michael. chorus is killer!

[ Reply to This ]
thanks Vic &mdash 11/21/07 - 10:25:57 AM
which part reminded you of the Pixies? the heavily reverbed lone backing vocal? lou reed is a huge influence; when he was good he was great. sterling morrison is also just amazing to me. might have to do another mix with a pounding piano part in the chorus. thanks for listening.

re: pixies &mdash 11/22/07 - 01:52:15 AM
the back vcl with the reverb was one. But the chord structure would work as well. Frank (or Francis) I'm sure would of wished he came up with it. BTW, I was just watching the making of L.R.'s Transformer Tues. night. Pretty cool

Great &mdash 11/21/07 - 10:31:02 AM
Very good indeed. Yes, Velvets, obviously, but what I like about this and some of your other stuff is that you have a knack for constructing thoughtful music that works with well crafted lyrics - you have a nice theme and you execute it lyrically and musically very well. Good song, good lyrics, good performance, good recording. You don't just chuck it all in and go "la la la I love my cat". More like this please -

Phil

for the nice words. i think the term "knack" would sum it up, as I never really put a lot of time into anything. maybe if there were more of it available. it's funny, before the technology was available, i used to dream of having the luxury and equipment to do stuff at home; now, i dream of having the luxury of more free time.

I herd of the Warlocks... &mdash 11/21/07 - 11:53:01 PM
I don't remember when though.

I really dig the vocal stuff in here. The aaaah's are real cool. They give the tune a pop twist. With the heavy guitar and dynamic dissident sounds in there keep it from being to pop.

nice work.

I really like the overall sound of this tune.

thanks for listening. glad you liked. the warlocks are great, although it was also the first name that the grateful dead went by.i don't think the current band is aware of that (more useless trivia in my head than i know what to do with).

too old &mdash 11/22/07 - 01:36:48 PM
i dunno if its age that is in question - more lifestyle.I never forget an ex saying 'we should get something to smoke' on our way out of town with a tent and a bottle of wine.We saw this roving band of what we then called 'crustys' or 'dog-on-a-string people' - dreadlocks, sunburnt and seemingly on some different plain. She asked this guy who must have been about 82 if he could sell and she went all giggly when she looked at him up close cos in his dreadlocks were hundreds of tiny silver trinkets and animals and stuff - ya know - long hair, beard, dreadlocks and a thick long coat.He never said a word - just smiled and signalled to one of his companions who came and sold us quality very cheap.I dont promote the stuff in any way - I usually get into some kind of trouble, but I have to say - I quite admire ageing non-conformists.Beautiful song - it brought all these old memories to the surface,to ramble on about!

Cheers - RG

YEAH!!! &mdash 11/22/07 - 03:58:41 PM
I dig this tune, a lot. Especially the Velvet Underground vibe u got going. I dig that little off-tunish chord thing at the end of a bar (I don't know how describe it in other musical terms). I dig the backing vocals, the screaming (well screaming). And, scuse me for this snipe like remark, for once the vocals have the place where they outta be, in the front, crisp and very confident. I dig this song the most from your recent posts, well, no it is in a different genre. Cool genre. Keep doing these tracks man, I wanna see you peform!! Hihihihih, my child-like enthusiasm is getting the better of me. Any way. I truly love this little tune. And the lyrics too, she will come down...unfortunately for her...
love, Marc

glad you liked. it's funny as everyone is always telling me to bring up the vocals more, and when i listened to this again, my first impulse was: "whoa, the vocals are way too loud." taste is a funny thing.so glad you liked. time for me to go to work now.

Classic M2. Cool and alternative with pop appeal. Reminds me of a 5o's Rock Ballad with added grunge. Reverb gives the tune a prom feel. The lyrics fit well with the melody. Great stuff.

well crafted lyrics. You made a good choice with switching from piano to this band production, IMHO. kind of a cautionary tale. The contrast of your lyrical delivery with the commentary you're making is great.
