Description:
Mandoline and harmony vocals - Björna
Guitar and lead vocals - Johannes
This is a take for diggers of real life raw jamming. An unplanned jam with my friend Björna.
It starts out just as simple jamming and later transfigures into Shady Groove. A song we both know.
Matters of curiosity:
- This is the first time I post something including a "real life" friend of mine.
- Singing is a very new thing for me to dare. Have not been singing much at all in my life.
- The mikes have caught some strange miss-sound here and there, it is very live, just a living room.
The situation:
We were to attend a friends birthday party later that night, where we also were asked to contribute with music (the photo was taken on that party). Before the party when we were gathering in my house, I had the recording gear ready and set up in the living room since Björna never say no to a jam (and these jams never become dull).
So when he arrived with his mandoline I just had to push the record button and let the recording roll. Actually Björna never understood that the recording was already on when we did this. (Now of course he do, and is agreeing to this MJ-posting).
History:
The combination Björna and me have not been playing much together at all. We started out jamming together for a few times in a music café, and thereafter Björna asked me to join in for two café gigs backing his songs. A few jams, then two gigs, and now a birthday party, that's what we have done together so far.
I hope more will come. As Björna so aptly puts it; we were "moving in the same musical landscape".
If you have done the experience of jamming .. and you don't have to talk much about the music .. you just play it .. and it works .. then you know how fun this can be.
The song:
Very traditional. I don't know much about it. But when I've tried so search internet for lyrics I am getting several different sets of lyrics. Guess that's a hallmark of traditional songs.
Hardware:
Guitar, Mandoline, Golden Age Project R1 ribbon mics. Presonus Firewire interface. PowerBook.
Software:

I love this relaxed jamming blend of the guitar and mondolin. Hey, Curry, you should sing more often. What a treat! :-) [ Reply to This ]
Out of sight! &mdash 11/26/07 - 04:25:49 PM
This is one of the most enjoyable, fun live jams I have heard. What a connection you two have... one can hear and follow as you play off each other. Priceless. And Curry, you're singing! You sound great. We will have more of that, please.
Most enjoyable.

Wow thank you both Roxylee and Jack! Your support is important. Actually a yearning for singing has become stronger and stronger within since just this last summer. Less than half a year. That is interesting because I've not had it before. [ Reply to This ]

Now in MY world.... &mdash 11/27/07 - 07:34:13 AM
...we used to jam on this under its alter-ego version, 'Matty Groves'... And it could morph into 'Drunken Sailor' if we weren't careful...
This has a great living room jam feel, a nice liveliness... You can tell that real, living people are playing it...

Realia! &mdash 11/28/07 - 05:54:29 AM
It's just great hearing you in this context Johannes. You and Bjrna play so well together - casual and obviously enjoying the moment. Also good to hear your voice here - you need to do more singing, it sounds good.
I envy you having someone to jam with (especially someone who plays in such a sympathetic way with you.

what changed? &mdash 11/28/07 - 08:29:29 AM
johannes, how have you kept your lips together all this time WHEN YOU CAN SING???????? i absolutely LOVE this jam. from the first spunky mandolin smack to the beautiful last note of resolution - it's bursting with the energy of 2 men connected by their musical minds.
bizarre, but you sound soooo american, johannes. what do you think has changed in your life to bring out the good vocal from you?
my hat is off to the both of you - the instruments are so happy in each other's company, and when your voices merge, LO, it is very good. yes we WILL have more of this, PLEASE!!! happy anne [ Reply to This ]

Sounds like you were having a really good time &mdash 11/30/07 - 08:19:19 PM
Like EJH I know this tune as Matty Groves - and found myself singing a long with a different set of words! You've got a lovely grove going there - great to listen too - perhaps you ought to record one of your live sessions in front of an audience?
Good to see the mandolin becoming such a popular instrument on MJ these days...

Thanks a lot fo that information. I didn't know of these recordings. Found it on iTunes .. great! [ Reply to This ]
Haven't even listened to it yet... &mdash 12/14/07 - 05:06:31 AM
... but I know it will be good. My Net connection is too slow to stream, so I'm downloading. As others have mentioned, "Shady Grove" is the same tune as "Matty Groves." Matty is an English folk tune about a noble woman who seduces a young man. Later, both Matty and the woman are killed by the woman's husband. When the song crossed the Atlantic some 200 years ago, it morphed a bit into--depending upon the version--a depiction of American frontier life, or a glorification of infidelity. As far as I know, the Shady Grove lyric originated in the Appalacians, where from also came bluegrass music; the song is a staple of all bluegrass players. My theory is that the story of infidelity rewarded with a gruesome death had become the subject of *so many* early American folk songs that someone rewrote Matty Groves to give it a new theme.
Just in case anyone cares...
Still 20 minutes to go on the download. Looking forward to listening to it. [ Reply to This ]

Viva le call & response! &mdash 04/18/08 - 10:32:46 AM
It is trad, and/but sounds trad, too. The best thing about it for me is the sensitive interplay that's impossible to achieve by any other means than live play. So good to hear it. [ Reply to This ]
Very cool vibe &mdash 06/21/08 - 05:37:11 AM
Relaxed as can be. I like it, also the vocal harmony! I'd love to hear more like this. [ Reply to This ]
