Description:
Some poorly finished business many years ago
Lyrics:
All the skies are grey
All the roads are wet
All the leaves have fallen now
It’s a wonder it ain’t snowin’ yet
There’s no one here to hold me
No one to see this mess
No one in the world
Knows how lonely I feel
Except for you, I guess
Well I pretend to know what happened
I pretend to take some blame
I pretend that I’ve done
Everything I can
When I’m just too weary
To try again
The cruel rain keeps falling
The air is drippin’ cold
I haven’t caught my death
From the loneliness yet
But a night like this sure makes me feel
Pretty old
I didn’t want to hurt you
I just wanted it to end
You wanted me to keep lying to you
You wanted me to pretend
I can pretend to know what happened
I can pretend to take some blame
I can pretend that I’ve done
Everything I can
But I can’t pretend to take you back again
The cruel rain keeps falling
The air is drippin’ cold
I haven’t caught my death from the loneliness yet
But a night like this sure makes me feel
Pretty old

to the above chorus of praise for this wonderful, warm sounding tune. Your guitar and voice are married in a perfect blend of folk melancholy and musicality.
I really like this one.

Whoa.... &mdash 11/28/07 - 03:07:29 PM
Excellent work my man. Sounds as if it was produced by Daniel Lanois (I'm thinking Dylan's "Oh Mercy" album). Poignant lyrics sung with conviction. Classic feel. Bravo!
Be well!

I'm not familiar with that CD, &mdash 11/28/07 - 09:28:32 PM
Now I'll have to pick it up. Mentioning anything done by Dylan, well, I'm pretty happy with that;-). Appreciate the visit Mike, Thanks alot.

Bob, I don't know how I did that, but that reply was for Jack.
It's good to be at it again; I feel a new desire to record, and it's too cold to be outside without skis on. Thanks for the listen, Bob. [ Reply to This ]
This is enthralling &mdash 11/28/07 - 10:19:14 PM
I love the lyrics - great depth and resonance to the words. I was totally caught by the imagery. The guitar work is nicely done. I love the sound, and it sits well in the mix. There is a nice sense of space and the music fits the words perfectly. Very cool. Nice work. Peace. [ Reply to This ]
Thanks Dave &mdash 11/29/07 - 05:01:18 AM
I'm glad you identified with the imagery, as the day's weather formed the mood. Thanks for listening.

Great song Joe! &mdash 11/29/07 - 05:31:25 AM
Good lyrics and clear clean sounds - voice is as good as expected (and I expected a lot). Guitars are so crisp - very nicely recorded.
Lovely production ... are you using Ozone here?
Good going Joe,

Ozone? I wish! &mdash 11/29/07 - 05:38:39 PM
No, Neil, just same old Mac g4 with GB. I miked the guitar on one track and then played through the pickup on another (rhythm tracks), then played a lead through the pickup after I sang the vocal track. I am pleased with your response though:-), and grateful for your listen.
Cheers Neil,
Joe. [ Reply to This ]
nice playing &mdash 11/29/07 - 09:57:34 PM
really liked the acoustic playing alot. that firewire is an awesome tool--i run one myself.
my only nit pick would be that the vocals are a touch too loud..other than that, loved it!

I haven't explored all the ports on that firewire yet, but it sure is an interesting little piece of equipment. I'm glad you liked the song. I'll take the volume under advisement; thanks. Mixing is in an early evolutionary stage for me and I hope to take care of more little nits each time. [ Reply to This ]
Well-crafted &mdash 11/29/07 - 11:04:08 PM
The lyrics have a self-awareness that has me nodding my head. You deliver them very well, and with conviction. The accompaniment is simple, and supports your singing very well. [ Reply to This ]

Oh Man!! &mdash 11/30/07 - 08:38:50 PM
I just love the guitar on this song. Your voice and the guitar blend so well together. I found this tune to be very satisfying on that last November night of 2007.
Thanks for sharing. [ Reply to This ]
So tell me Joe &mdash 11/30/07 - 11:38:00 PM
why did you name this November? It's a beautiful sad song about loss and the misery that come with it but November isn't mentioned at all in the song. Not that it really matters, but I was just wondering.
I can relate to this one as well as the other song I listened to of yours, "Overtime". You seem to have a gift with lyrics and that's a good thing. The guitars worked very well on this and the mix too.
I like your work Joe, thanks for sharing it with us. Be well friend.

Hello Ed, &mdash 11/30/07 - 11:54:07 PM
Good to have you here. Well, it was written on a grey, wet, windy, November day. November in the Northeast has a certain quality when overcast; a quality that on that day amplified my recently aquired aloneness. Trees bare, wind biting, damp. You know, miserable. I'm glad you liked the song because I really like your taste in song-crafting (just getting to know it; that whiskey song is outstanding). Thanks so much for the feedback. [ Reply to This ]
heartfelt &mdash 12/04/07 - 10:08:44 PM
and well performed. your vocal is spot on. Nice guitar playin. I like the chorus sound you used on the one. Everything is up front in the mix. great job

....maybe not intentional but this reminds so much of mid 60s Stones ballads....Sitting on a Fence...Lady Jane etc, specially the accoustics sounds of mando and/or 12 string.
Nice nice atmosphere. [ Reply to This ]

such a good song with those emotional lyrics and you sing it with a heartfelt kind of passion too. I know that I've been there too, but it's all in the past, good song, regards M [ Reply to This ]

Yes, many years past for me also; the song stays with me though I"ve forgotten others I wish I hadn't. Well, working on new ones more difficult to record and little time to spend now. Hope to have them ready soon. Pleasure to make your aquaintance.

Drippin loneliness &mdash 12/17/07 - 12:10:58 AM
Top shelf song about the mess in the bottom drawer. Your voice is present and compelling.
Fix timing in the instrumentation. Good full guitar sound. I like that. [ Reply to This ]
Thanks Richard, &mdash 12/17/07 - 08:26:19 PM
I did the guitar in two tracks, I may have been slighlty out of time on one of the tracks or not played exactly the same way. I'm trying to develop the discipline to bring the tracks together, but it's like playing with a new band, and I need to develop a chemistry with my other track-personalities. I'm glad you liked the sound; one of those experiments in technique to make the guitar sound warmer. Thanks. [ Reply to This ]
Gord-like &mdash 12/17/07 - 10:28:20 PM
I am being blown away by the quality of production of a Gordon Lightfoot cassette I bought at a rummage sale this summer -- Gord's Gold Volume II. Analog is so warm. We have to work so hard to get digital MP3s to radiate fulness. You have a resonant voice like Lightfoot so use it to melt folk listeners. You are on your way! [ Reply to This ]
Crisp and clear! &mdash 12/17/07 - 09:07:35 PM
Great acoustic sound! Production is very crisp! Despite the angst found in the subject of your lyrics, your vocals are very smooth and pleasing to the ear. Very sincere and emotive. A good listen! Thanks! [ Reply to This ]

Gordon &mdash 12/17/07 - 09:09:37 PM
You remind me of Gordon Lightfoot, but you sing with more feeling than he did.
"I can pretend to know what happened
I can pretend to take some blame
I can pretend that I%u2019ve done
Everything I can
But I can%u2019t pretend to take you back again" That is powerful. I can identify. You're a great communicator.
Your guitar work is appealing and listenable. Sounds like you really like playing the guitar, but you like songwriting and singing even more. [ Reply to This ]
Hello John, &mdash 12/18/07 - 10:43:10 PM
I do really love playing and singing, think it comes from my father; he once told me he was singing "South of the Border" to my sister as a lullaby when he was stuck in a bus station with a few of my siblings. A woman sitting nearby was moved to tears. After settling my sister down, he approached the woman and said he noticed her tears, apologized for upsetting her, then asked if she knew someone in Mexico.
She said no; she was a music teacher. ;-)
Thank you for your compliments, John. I play by ear, can't read music, therefore learning has been slow. It's great to have you here, and very encouraging.
Cheers,

Joe, just had to join to reply to the previous note...if I remember the story correctly, the lady on the bus was a voice teacher:-). It's like the 13th floor they were supposed to build on that downtown building...ah, but thats another story! Enjoying all your songs! [ Reply to This ]

Terrific lyrics &mdash 12/30/07 - 07:19:50 PM
Love those personal type lyrics cause they seem so real. But they don't seem so real when the music is not good. But you really seem to come through in flying colors. Nice stereo pickin too to go along with the nice sounding vocals.
Way go go! [ Reply to This ]

I lived in the Virgin Islands for a few years and got to see many acoustic players. The best part of the gig was when they did their originals.
You have created yet another excellent song and performace. I'ld go watch your gig...heck, even on a Monday night..keep it up!

I have the first live job I've had in awhile coming up; kinda nervous. I don't remember how I managed to have 3 sets memorized. And I'll be playing alone, something I don't know if I'll like. I'll miss my lead player (rac927) and Coop is too far away. Thanks for the kind (and timely) words;-)
