Description:
I sat down to GarageBand to find a drum track to use for this love song I've been working on, when I came across a drum track that immediately inspired a whole new song creation. Unable to get to my love song, I had to work on this one to get it completely out of my mind. So here it is in digital form.
I wish I knew more about song mastering in GarageBand so I can achieve that "polished" sound that so many of my favorite MJers are able to get...but I kinda like how this tune came out. Check it out.
Lyrics:
Hey!!
by psexnyc
2007
It's time to let your hair down
Take your troubles put them down
We're about to get down
Grab your partner boogie down
People
Let's come together
Let's drop our differences
Like we know better
Come and feel my funky groove
Let it make your body move
Shake your head from side to side
Make your spirit come alive
Pull you partner close
Say it's you I love the most
And if you ain't got nobody
Just love yourself and party.
(Adlib Break)
Chorus Repeat
This is such a blast
Gotta move it fast
Move your wiggle to the middle
And shake your ______
People fell this groove
Let it make your bootie move
Take all of your frustrations
Turn it to elation
Let your problems go
You don't need them here mo more
Just go with this flow cuz
You ain't got nothing to lose tonight
Just that negativity that don't make you feel so right
And all that pressure and things
You've been carrying round in your head
You've got to dance and dance and dance
Until it's dead.

I played thru my iPod today and you are right!! It does sound good thru the headphones. I also played it thru my computer's surround sound speakers and didn't like it at all. I'm gonna burn a CD and play it in somebody's car to see how it sounds.
Thanks for listening and downloading!!! [ Reply to This ]

Joyful sound &mdash 11/29/07 - 11:25:19 PM
and a nice use of percussion. I can see how this drum sound appealed to you. Of course, the real pleasure of this is what you've done with it. Good lyrics, terrific groove, and a nice, nice guitar break! Also I love the panning on the guitar - very cool. This is a great track. If I could nitpick on the recording a bit, the lead vocal seems to "spike" here and there (at least to my ears - it may be in my head!), and the fadeout seems a little abrupt to me. As I say, just minor things - nothing that detracts from the fact that this is a great song. Very nice work. Glad I stopped by. Peace. [ Reply to This ]
Thanks for The Comments &mdash 11/30/07 - 12:26:54 AM
I was just auditioning some drum loops for this love song and came across a collection of drum loops. One of them immediately conjured up a bass guitar line in my head that I could not get rid of. So I grabbed my acoustic and tuned the E string way down (cuz I don't have a bass) and thumped out a bassline and everything else sort of fell into place.
I hear ya about the lead vocal spike. I thought I had tweaked that peak point down a bit. Looks like I might have to go back in and do some more surgery to it.
And the ending...For the life of me, I could not come up with a solid ending. The groove is just so continuous! That beat just keeps me jamming along with it no matter if I'm playing a bass line, some funky guitar rhythms or a balls out distorted guitar solo. It just keeps on going. It was going to be well over 9 minutes long, so I just faded it out.
Anyway, thanks for commenting and listening! [ Reply to This ]

I've had tracks that just didn't want to stop! And I think the fadeout works well with this song. I guess I'd just fade it out more slowly. Maybe add some new element just as it starts to disappear (like a heart-ripping guitar solo!) just to tantalize the ear. Either way, great track. Peace. [ Reply to This ]

Hey! &mdash 11/29/07 - 11:29:15 PM
What a great song. I probably would have let the guitar solo sit right in the center of the mix instead of panning back and forth, but that is a minor point. Good mix overall and great party feel to this. Is that you on ALL the vocals? [ Reply to This ]
Hey Announcer! &mdash 11/30/07 - 12:37:59 AM
I thought about leaving the guitar solo in the center, but I got to thinking that this song is just sooo crazy with its unexpected moments that the guitar solo should also do something unanticipated. So I played with that panning thing a little bit.
The vocals...I managed to get my son to contribute a "hey". He's 15 so he's got that deep puberty voice. So his "hey" is the deep sounding one. Other than that, all those voices are me.
Thanks for listening and commenting and feel free to check out some of my other tunes! I'm a sucker for feedback! [ Reply to This ]
Nice track! &mdash 11/29/07 - 11:48:19 PM
This really has an impromptu jam, "we're havin' a great time" feel to it. I enjoyed reading how a drum track inspired you to write this- it's interesting how one single thing like that can be such an inspiration for a song. The mix sounds good and clean and the guitar sounds great! [ Reply to This ]
Thanks MD &mdash 11/30/07 - 12:53:04 AM
I truly appreciate your comments...especially since you are one of my MJ heros. Those metal masterpieces you put out and collaborate on...Awesome. I'm actually an old school metal head of the Judas Priest, Scorpions, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Ozzy, Dio ilk. I got a couple of heavy metal tunes in the oven right now. They'll be ready sooner or later....I'm just stuck on my acoustic right now and trying to record every acoustic born tune I got before I give in completely to the electric guitars. I've only 6 more acoustic songs left...so...
Thanks for listening and commenting! And if you liked the guitar work on this song, check out my tune called "Father To Son"...see if you like that one! [ Reply to This ]

Hey Joe!! &mdash 12/01/07 - 01:42:33 AM
Unfortunately, I don't any players period. I'm in NYC and I am all by myself on this. It's because I don't participate in a band that I turned to GarageBand. My full-time job dominates my time so getting to jell with a band is out. I used to play rhythm guitar and do back up vocals, but this is way more fun. This software has made me into a one-man-band.
I gotta do one of those collaborations around here sooner or later!!
Thanks for listening and thanks for the comments!! [ Reply to This ]

if you fall asleep with this tune in your head tonight, you are going to find yourself waking up in a groovin funk for no apparent reason. You ever heard of RLS? "Restless Leg Syndrome"? Well you are going to come down with RBS - "Restless Booty Syndrome" and you can't ask your doctor about that one. They don't have a cure for it yet!!

Loose Funk &mdash 07/17/08 - 02:15:03 PM
Love how laid back the funk is on this. It's groovin'!
Only recommendation I would make would be to roll off the treble on the guitar at the opening. It's a touch harsh on the ears.
Love the hoopin and hollerin' between the verses, it's 100% joyful.
Way to lay it down. [ Reply to This ]
Thanks Pete!! &mdash 07/21/08 - 02:32:29 PM
To trim off some treble on the guitar track would probably require me to find another one of those EQ settings in Garage Band 3, or maybe I should apply that 10-band graphic equalizer setting I saw in one of those presets. I am at work right now, so I am using my "photographic" memory of GB to figure a way to try out your suggestion. What do you think? [ Reply to This ]
EQ &mdash 07/21/08 - 02:51:26 PM
Not really sure how to go about it in GB3 as I am still on GB2. Not to mention I have the sound engineering skills of a deaf goldfish.
I'd play around with the general EQ setting for the guitar track right off the main track info window. [ Reply to This ]

Ha! I have heard your tunes and you rock bro!! One thing about goldfish though.....They can't close their eyes so they are always alert in all ways!!
