Number 29
"Number 29" is the one track left off of J.S. Bach's "Two Part Inventions". Having to meet a publisher's deadline, he decided to scrap this piece because he hadn't quite completed the final touches to make it "just so." But old J.S. always regretted sliding this last counterpuntal duet into his collection, a situation that has now been rectified some 250 years or so after his death.

but you'll never believe me. http://www.macjams.com/song/37168 is a song that was originally going to be on Nevermind by Nirvana. I ran into Kurt Cobain (he was sleeping under a bridge on a fire road in the mountains outside of Aberdeen); the guy was in pretty bad shape. I ended up giving him a flannel shirt (size M), a half bag of China White and a bootleg cassette of the Melvins playing a kegger thrown by a bunch of bike messengers in San Francisco. As a gesture of friendship, he gave me the song "God Only Knows" and told me not to let anyone hear it.

Now that the cats out of the bag, i'm terrified of that skank Courtney coming after me. She's crazy, i hear she keeps razors in her hair. She can have the song, i just want my Melvins tape back.

Dr. Evil's Laser
Great guessing everyone! The band is the Alan Parsons Project and the album is 'Eye in the Sky'. The finale piece was written as a variant of the opening piece, Sirius, but develops with an orchestral buildup taken from the finale style of one of the band's earlier recordings - see below. Since it was considered too sentimental and already done, a new finale was written and ended the album.

The title Dr. Evil's laser talks about the group. His "Laser Beam" (you have to do the quotation mark actions along with me) was invented by a Doctor Parsons and so he called his nefarious scheme the Alan Parsons Project. And the band keeping their 'eye' on the ball points to the album title.

Now for those who said 'I robot', you get near full marks since the finale starts with a variant of Sirius but it evolves to use the repetitive prog rock choral/orchestral layering from the final piece of "I Robot" (Genesis CH.1. V.32) as a nod to the band's past work. So it was a tricky one, since you would have to know which album was the most recent to guess correctly.

This was a lot of fun in composing and hearing the outstanding work people put forward, and I truly appreciate all the supportive comments from everyone!!

Untitled 27
the velvet underground were ready to release the cult hit album known informally as "Peel It" due to the yellow banana with a zipper cover by Andy Warhol the band's manager. He had introduced a singer into this album mix named Nico. Nico would have affairs with two of the band's members before leaving. The Velvet Underground with Nico album would be delayed in release over legal arguments over the back photograph of the band. Upon it's release the momentum had dwindled and it came in very low in Bill Board's Top 200.

Buds sound bed very much has the sound and feel of the song Venus in Furs from that album.

Feter's Blue Room Tapes
Right then...funny thing this one. Feter had previously sent this independent of LSP for some collab work. in the end the major hint of who this is can be found in the nature of this collaboration. more on that at the end.

Bob Dylan raised the ire of many of his fans when he toured "electric" in 1965/66. After this transition he even allowed the unthinkable...a band actually playing with him on recordings. The Band recorded some legendary work in what was known as "The Basement Tapes" and would have a landmark album of their own," Music From Big Pink".
One song recorded during this time was one called "Wheels of Fire" a song used in the BBC series Absolutely Fabulous. The collab was between Dylan and Rick Danko, bassist for The Band.

Feter managed, in his hook, to mimic the hook in "Wheels On Fire". Absolutely amazing...and this is what gave some of you the blues, because you did know that melody.

Final Hint: Feter going electric...didn't see that one coming did you!

Every thing's Duckie
While working on songs for the soundtrack to his new movie in 1985, director John Hughes approached The Psychedelic Furs to do a remake of their song "Pretty in Pink" from which he took the title for the movie. In addition, Hughes asked the band to contribute another tune for the final scene in the movie, thus book ending the film with tunes by the Furs.

Hughes explained his original ending for the movie where, at the prom, the main character Andie (Molly Ringwald) finally realizes that while she was looking for love in the arms of Blaine (Andrew McCarthy), she actually had the love she'd wanted all along in her ubiquitous friend Duckie (Jon Cryer). He described to to Furs front man Richard Butler as "Duckie's dream coming true."

A few weeks later, Hughes received an early copy of "Dreams Come True" from the Furs. Unfortunately. Shortly after, the ending with Andie ending up with Duckie didn't go over well in test screenings of the movie, so Hughes decided to reshoot the ending with Andie going back to Blaine.

Though the band liked the tune, their disappointment in it's being cut from the film and legal wranglings between the Furs' record company and Pretty in Pink's producers have kept it shelved until it recently, due to a strange warp in the space-time continuum, ended up in my hands.

I know you are going to say 'Who?'
But if you google 'psytrance artists' you will find his name and his other artist names.

The artist is called 'Hallucinogen' and my attempt at LSP was from his first album 'Twisted'. Hallucinogen's real name is Simon Posford.

For psytrance the artist seems to have the Midas touch, he produces extremely good tracks from ambient to full-on trance.
Another name to look out for is 'Shpongle' which is a collab with Raja Ram. Their first two albums are brilliant, all enthic sounding relaxing tracks. Highly Recommended.

You Lied
I already explained the circumstances of the recording. Although the song was recorded at the same time as 'Hard Days Night' it was really intended for 'Beatles for Sale' so HDN or BFS were correct answers.

Today
'Today' is meant to be a lost song from REM's 'Out of Time' album. A couple of clues were included in the lyrics 'Out of your Time' in the first verse and the backing vocals on the last chorus 'Crazy what you could have had' which is a line from the song 'Country Feedback'. The song itself I think sounds closer to 'Texarkana'. A few of you were spot on and there's been some interesting comparisons too! I really like the idea of this being about Stevie Nicks...

Weather Report

A demo by Joe Zawinul he planned to present to the band for the "Heavy Weather" album , but he lost it in his kilometers of tapes .

Sentinel , Bud , J.A Stewart, davisamerica, peacepiano,
guitapick , damiengh recognised the band , all the others just have to give a listen to one of the best album in jazz fusion genre :-)

People (Running Through My Mind)
This is an experiment that attempts to recreate what I thought I heard as a kid when I first heard the Beatles' song "Penny Lane".

"Penny Lane" is in a sense a lost tune itself in that it didn't get onto the Sgt. Pepper's album. So I guess this one was lost from there too? "Penny Lane" was released as a single along with "Strawberry Fields Forever".

I wrote "People" starting at the end. I began with the chord progression that I had used on "Falling" (http://www.macjams.com/song/36887) and I re-used the "endless descent" effect here too (the flutes play the chromatic descending scale here). I was going after continuously modulating the key.

This was an attempt to simulate what I recall about my first listen to "Penny Lane" where it shifts back and forth between two contrasting keys. These days, we're all used to hearing modulations in songs, so I figured I had to severely exaggerate the modulation effect to emulate my old impression.

I would describe the vocal harmonies in "People" as nearly tortured, I might have gone too far on that. (It was pretty hard to sing it too.)

The lyrics were intended to be a slightly modernized version of typical Suburbia. (I don't think people were jogging much in 1967.) It mostly focuses on people doing ordinary things. That's what I think I recall the most about the lyrics of "Penny Lane".

It's funny that several of the guesses were some of my favorite groups and songs. I guess their influence on me showed through here, especially Andy Partridge of XTC.

I was thinking along the lines of earlier Beatles before I settled on "Penny Lane". While I was working on another song "Nothing" (http://www.macjams.com/song/37083) I was thinking about the Beatles' "Do You Want To Know A Secret" - but that one spiralled out of control and I decided it wouldn't work out as a "lost song".

This Project was a ton of fun! Thanks Bud.

Beach Side LSP
The original inspiration for this tune is Tarkus by ELP, but the tune I came up with was too Jazzy. I then reworked it as a missing pop instrumental from the Love Beach album. My original has extra percussion and an additional keyboard line, but ELP usually held to straight trio compositions (except when they used the orchestra :)

Boots and Vest
First a nod to my brother Will for writing the lyrics and contributing vocals on this tune. He always rises to the challenge - I'm very lucky.

Most of you figured it was a lost Neil Young tune and you were right. My favorite wrong guess was from psexnyc ..."It's not Neil Young's lost track. Joe Walsh lost this one!! It should have been on his 1973 album "The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get".

The winning guess came from Ejh -

"Neil Young and Crazy Horse, but it's a Danny Whitten song, so maybe from the first Crazy Horse album...
References to Wordsworth probably a little haute-falutin for Neil and company, though...Too many flowers for 'Tonight's The Night'...
Maybe 'Everybody Knows THis Is Nowhere'..."

He pretty much hit it right on the head. I started as a lost song from "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" and Will started writing from that place. Turns out though that we'd both been listening to Neil and Crazy live at the Fillmore 1970 which was the Everywhere tour. On that recording Danny Whitten leads "Come on Baby Let's Go Downtown" which he co-wrote with Neil during the Everywhere sessions. That's why Neil's high voice waits till the chorus to come in.

and I'm still...
I hadn't intended to do another LSP tune - but I couldn't seem to escape the project. Hope you understand.

Vic Holman bet me a quarter it was Radiohead from Kid A and he's absolutely right. Truth is though that if I had started with that in mind it probably wouldn't have rocked as hard in the guitars and the voice would be more present throughout. This was one of those left turn mutant tracks.

It's this kind of thing that inspired me to create LSP. I've often started a song only to find that I'm being heavily influenced by something I've heard before. Usually that's where I make an effort to distance myself from the reference and make something more "original". LSP was an experiment in embracing influence and exploring the motivations and techniques of another artist. I was really impressed with everyone's effort.

Special note: LSP would like to present Rik Berryere with the long overdue title of "Best Comment Writer - not even on this planet" for his unfailing wit and insight.

Well acutaly this song is an old song from my very
first band , and its not totaly my own .my cousin

yet .last year I thought of this song to rerecorded
it for a special person to me so I tweeked some words

Crazy Star
If you guessed Pink Floyd as the artist (almost all did) you are correct.

I did mention that this was a heavier version then the rest of the album.
The album that this song would have been placed on is "Wish You Were Here." The title and lyrics are the biggest give away. The original album was a theme on the mental breakdown of original member Syd Barrett.

There are a few nods in the music that eludes to a few of there other albums. But the boys in the band thought I was getting to far ahead.

Just for fun at the very end I chopped up a loop of a cash register and heavily effected it. ca-ching.

The Inner Light
This almost ended up as the lost song to the lost song project. I couldn't get the tight lilt in my voice to emulate the artist. But i figured I would go ahead and post it anyway.

The artist is George Harrison. From the "All Things Must Pass" album.
There are some rockin tunes on there.

George originally had a song titled "The Inner Light", from his Beatle stint. I just shortened it. Also, at the first few bars I did a slight variance of a cover song that George did on this album.

Some guessed Tom Petty. And that's cool. A lot of his songs seemed to carry on the torch as well as I have done a few times here on Macjams. Such a cool place to be involved with!

'Court'eous Music...
...started out as me just trying out the software instruments in JamPack World on some improvised songs.
When stevel suggested I post them for the Lost Songs Project, I agreed they might be part of the Long-Lost Songs Project, but that something by 'Anonymous' might not be so much fun to figure out....and how to do it?

Then it occurred to me that one of my favorite music parodists, Peter Schickele, would often include 'serious' songs on his tracks with lampooned stories or histories.
And so, I completed my 'Court'eous Music and wrote a history similar to that found on the PDQ Bach albums by Mr. Schickele.

The specific album that this is 'lost' from would be most appropriately "The Wurst of PDQ Bach," among such tracks as: "Cantata: Iphigenia in Brooklyn," "Schleptet in E Flat Major," and "Eine Kleine Nichtmusik."

More than the fact that there just wasn't room on the album for such 'Court'eous Music, rumor has it that when one of the well-meaning housekeepers of Mindjour Manner laundered the table napkin upon which the musical notation had been written, the documented proof of the centuries-old songs was forever washed away, and the interest in the music by the Anonymous composer lost, along with his music .

Lost song found!
"All Godzilla Wants To Do Is Dance" turned out to be a lost track from Thomas Dolby's breakout lp, 'The Golden Age Of Wireless'. Why was it not included? Well......... it turned out that that album had actually been released five times, with different lineups and track sequencing, and even entirely different recordings of some tracks - or even dropping and adding entire songs, depending on which tunes were doing well wherever and whenever. Even the cover art was changed to give the impression of a fresh new album. (All true facts. Everything that follows, however...)

In all of this, the Godzilla tune was supposed to be released somewhere but kept getting pushed aside because it was just a wee bit too... silly. Years went by while the track languished on an old tape in the back closet of a sound studio until mysteriously appearing on numerous file-swapping sites on the Internet in the late '90s, often attributed to other 80's-era groups such as Oingo Boingo, David Byrne and the Talking Heads, Weird Al, Vangelis, Devo, David Bowie, Buggles - even Blue Oyster Cult! (These were all guesses by MacJammers, many of whom could have been right... a lot of stuff by these artists sounded like Dolby in various measures - except Blue Oyster Cult, but that was just a 'Zilla thing!) Kudoes to all, and a round of the good stuff to those who guessed right!

It goes without saying that I had fun myself - what I didn't expect was that I'd learn so much about not only my own chosen artist, but also many of the others chosen by the rest of the LSP participants. This has been one of the most successful MacJams events ever, and everyone who worked so hard to put something together deserves a huge round of applause.

And, finally... Bud, who put this whole thing together and lit the candle for us all. 'Thank you' doesn't begin to cut it, but it's where it begins. A standing ovation for you, my friend.

i know most of you guessed tom waits, and with that you are correct...very nice, glad to see a bunch of people who actually know and recognize the genius that is ol'tommy the cat! this song was loeft off of the third disc of orphans for some reason (the disc full of soundtrack tunes and collaborations...and other very odd songs, even for tom). the song was recorded after tom had a brief encounter with robert smith of the cure (who provided the guitar track, which the song was based off of). this tune has a different feel musically because of just that, robert originated it. tom loved it so much, he asked if he could have the honor of vocal duties...and of course robert agreed.

i have to give jgurner a big thumbs up for guessing the collaboration correctly, though it surprised the heck out of me anyone actually caught on. i thought the idea of these two getting together was far fetched...REALLY far fetched! in other words, you're a genius jgurner. and for everyone who contributed to this project, you all created some spectacular songs! this was great fun, and i personally cannot wait until the next LSP. greag and i both highly appreciate everyone coming by and giving us a listen, and all of your comments where wonderful...you've all been great...so to all of you, THANK YOU!

You Can't Touch Me
I have to admit, several of the guesses were BETTER than my original intent and made me consider not telling the truth. It's kind of embarrassing that guesses like Frankie Goes To Hollywood and The Buggles were better than my actual choice. I think 'Hungry Like The Wolf' by Duran Duran is the BEST guess, the one I wished I would've thought of myself. What I had intended however was to imitate: TEARS FOR FEARS "ELEMENTAL" !! When I first heard Tears For Fears, I realized how much you could do with home recording equipment, pretending you were a multi-person band. So it was a kind of tribute. Great guessing, everyone!

And the answer is ...
FAIRPORT CONVENTION and the 1969 album "Liege and Lief". With a guest appearance from the (then unknown) King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp.

The Fairport band member who didn't appear on this track was fiddle player Dave Swarbrick. Much as we'd have loved to have some fiddle on there, neither of us can play it, so we went for one of Dick's amazing guitar wig-outs instead.

Extra five points to those of you who named Judy Dyble. She was the singer on Fairport's first album, rather abruptly removed to make way for Sandy Denny. She went off and briefly joined Giles Giles & Fripp, an eccentric outfit which morphed into King Crimson the following year.

The song "Porton Down" was written by Dick, who also played all the instruments and did all the production work (he's good like that). Previous versions of the song have already been released on a couple of his albums. He gave it a Come All Ye/Matty Groves treatment and I adjusted a few of the lyrics to make it more topical to the late 60s.
