Keywords:
lonely (44)nights (5)songs (5)harmonica (35)country (101)
Description:
This is a remix of the earlier version, now with Ed Wemmerus Sr., aka sloparts, sitting in on bass and adding the drums tracks. I discovered a few more dials and knobs in GarageBand 1 that seemed, to my ear, bring this tune up a notch. Hope you like it.

If you haven't listened to sloparts fine country music (and a few other genres thrown in) then GO HERE.

Thanks Ed... you're a pro.

Lyrics:
Lonely nights, I've been spending too long
Lonely songs, I've been singing to the dawn.

Since you left me high and dry
What was I to do?
All I got is memories of
Spending time with you.

I'm sitting here waiting for the sun to shine,
Wishing I could sleep just to pass the time.
Lonely nights, lonely songs.

Lonely nights, I've been spending too long
Lonely songs, I've been singing to the dawn.

seems just like yesterday
We were having fun
Sure we fought, but then we'd kiss,
And you would call me Hon...
We'd go out each and every night
And we would paint the town.
Now all I do is cry and moan,
And wear this silly frown.

I'm sitting here waiting for the sun to shine,
Wishing I could sleep just to pass the time.
Lonely nights, lonely songs.

Lonely nights, I've been spending too long
Lonely songs, I've been singing to the dawn.

(Harmonica break)

Lonely nights, I've been spending too long
Lonely songs, I've been singing to the dawn.

Since you left me high and dry
What was I to do?
All I got is memories of
Spending time with you.

I'm sitting here waiting for the sun to shine,
Wishing I could sleep just to pass the time.
Lonely nights, lonely songs.

Lonely nights I've been spending too long.

Ed's (sloparts) bass and drum track really helps fill this song out. I am really digging this country thing... I may have to spend some time in these parts. Heheh.

Nice collab! &mdash 12/07/07 - 09:30:14 PM
There was a time way back when, that my friends and I would frequent a bar where country music ruled. I'm sure that had this been on the juke box, it would have been in heavy rotation. A very nice song for sure and the production sounds tops!

And now we have Ed bellying up to the bar. Nice!

He's buying, right?

Yeah Vic, I'm buying, &mdash 12/07/07 - 11:57:38 PM
but your paying cause I didn't bring any money. Free beer for everyone, Vic's paying.

What a great collab. Gives the song legs, for dancing of course. Sounds like a two-step, but I could be wrong. Great job fellas.

Thanks to you... &mdash 12/08/07 - 11:37:39 AM
Ed, it took me a while to get back to this after you sent me your bass and drum tracks. But it was your offering them that gave me the incentive to revisit this and put some real time into the mixing end of things... something I usually don't concentrate on enough. So my thanks to you for filling out the tune with your (slo)parts and sparking the remix.

cheers

The guitars sound really great and your vocal shines on this. Great job with the mix. Sounding top shelf all the way. You may make a country boy out of me after all!

Well, I'm not exactly a country boy... so I can relate to what you're saying. I'm starting to think I need to spend some more time in this world of country. Thanks Ktn...

Was wondering if you two might get together on a song - perfect match on this one. Like the harp a lot, and everything else works just right.

I liked Ed's music right from the start. What a great addition to the lineup here at MJ. Having him jump in with me on this song really sparked the need for not just his added tracks, but a remix. Glad you like it Neil... Thanks.

Re: my comment on your earlier version &mdash 12/09/07 - 04:09:46 PM
Still the same good country tune. The drums and bass that now is played to support the groove you have going with your guitar, has helped the feel of the song, and to me it appears as a complete, well crafted tune.

Bravo!

I was going to... &mdash 12/10/07 - 04:09:40 PM
drop the drum track like you suggested (others had given the same advice). I never thought the first was a drum track to actually go on a finished song... a little lazy and I don't have much in the way of good drum loops. Then Ed sent me his bass and drums... well, I realized that this would be a "band" song.

I'm somewhat amazed how the song has developed and become better. All in all, very satisfying.

Thanks Thor.

A classic &mdash 12/09/07 - 04:30:06 PM
Real nice touch on this one, Jack. Ed's contribution really adds depth and fills the song out very nicely. The harmonica just put it over the top!! I think we should have more songs at MJ that feature the harp!

[ Reply to This ]
Not more cow bell?? &mdash 12/10/07 - 07:58:33 PM
... but more harp! LOL. I'm all for that. I do like tooting on the harmonica. Yep, Ed adds the missing ingredients into this song and, as you said, fills it out nicely. I really appreciated reading your take on the tune. Good to see your face AC... best to you and your family.

well well &mdash 12/09/07 - 04:42:24 PM
stretching my genre tastes here... but I can certainly tell a bunch of well-performed bits that make a good song! My only suggestion would be to raise the vocals a teensy bit, they seemed just a tad too far back. But other than that, hey, this is reeeal naaaiiiiice. :-) Well done, you two! Very hummable tune, stuck to the roof of my mouf like saltwater taffy, I like that.

I understand... &mdash 12/11/07 - 10:53:17 AM
that stretching into new genres. Although I do like a number of country artists, I have never made an overtly country song until now. It has been fun, especially with Ed coming on board with his bass and drums. Glad you took time to listen and thanks for your nice comments.

No way! &mdash 12/10/07 - 10:54:26 AM
You found more knobs and dials in GB1? How was that possible? It only had 5 knobs and 3 dials!

Way! &mdash 12/11/07 - 11:31:25 AM
... I was fumbling around in the dark in the GarageBand 1 studio room when I came across these unobtrusive, yet interesting dials. As the song was playing I turn them a bit and, shazzam, I tweaked the sound quality. Amazing stuff, eh?

Tell us, oh master... &mdash 12/11/07 - 01:51:45 PM
You are being rather vague about precisely which knobs you found. Let me venture a guess. You found filter and plug-in controls on the Master track. Somehow, you have given this GarageBand 1 mix an incredible balance and ambience that is almost as good as the best analog mixing.

Riding &mdash 12/10/07 - 01:43:16 PM
Riding high in the saddle there partner. Move over Gene Autry, for Dadai is moving into your territory. There's a new sheriff in town. Yee-Haww.

Sounding real good here and very believable. Like you've been doing this kind of thing for years.

Liked that fiddling in the background and the bass came out pretty nice.

Hey pardna... &mdash 12/11/07 - 10:08:46 PM
thanks for your kind comments. Old Gene Autry certainly is one of the originals, that's for sure.

This song did seem comfortable for me... I'm glad you liked it. Might just have to do another...

Thanks again.

Thank you for chiming in on this song. Yours are especially gracious comments considering the "not so real" violin playing via my keyboard. I should have asked you to sit in with your fiddle (always room for another take!).

I wasn't wearing a cowboy shirt... but I guess I should if I ever perform this.

cheers.

Looking the part &mdash 12/15/07 - 09:23:55 AM
My partner bought me a cowboy shirt a couple of Christmases ago and it does occasionally get worn at gigs as one of the bands I'm in gets a bit country/bluegrass at times.

I'd be more than happy to add some fiddle to this (especially as it's in one of my fave keys). Might take a few weeks 'coz of the festivities and I've been struggling to find time to work on my own stuff just lately - but if you send the track over without the 'fiddle' I'll see what I can do.

Hank &mdash 12/16/07 - 07:40:24 AM
Reminds me of stuff by Hank Williams, Sr.

I love the acoustic guitar on this track. I started loving the sound of the acoustic guitar after hearing "Band On The Run" by Paul McCartney, and your playing reminds me of that great (but silly) song.

Drum track is a nice addition. Well-planned and played.

Harmonica sounds just great. That's the real thing, right? Bob Dylan would be pleased.

Great! &mdash 03/03/08 - 07:51:21 AM
Mr. Jack, since I heard it before with just the vocal and guitars I was amazed by the composition. And now after re-doing it with Sloparts groovy bass and drums, just as Feter said " A CLASSICAL GEM " ... Great to hear our Elvis is fine .. It has been long time since I heard your vocal. What a great download?!
