Description:
Hi folks. It's been a while since I submitted anything. In fact, I haven't even been around listening to much for a spell. Life, as they say, got in the way. But things have settled down enough now that I have the time and space (headwise, that is) to turn some of the hurdles of the past few months into song. In fact, I've embarked on something of a recording orgy (not as much fun as it sounds...) over the past couple of weeks. This is the first result. Feelgood and poptacular it ain't, but I think it ultimately has an optimistic tilt. Hope you find it worth lending an ear. It's good to be back. Peace, y'all.

Lyrics:
Take It As It Comes

I'm not the last man standing
Everybody just went home
I guess I got what I demanded
Well I proved I’m right
But now I'm out here on my own

But I just might have enough to see me through
It just might be enough

‘Cos I’ve got nothing but regret
At least I’ve got something
I’ll get up in the morning
And take it as it comes

And far be it from me
To tell you what you're thinking
They say nothing's ever free
But this one's on the house
‘Cos this ship of fools is sinking

And it might last long enough to see us through
It just might be enough

Take a picture with your favorite smile in place
Tell me do you even recognize that face?

it's nice to see you back and secondly what a great song - fab tune and really well put together. It's late here and I'm listening through headphones and this sounds excellent. Love the lead guitar work, subtle strings and vocal harmonies. First-class and your best yet...

You are too kind. High praise from you! I'm really glad you liked it, and glad you noticed the strings ( I wasn't sure if maybe they were a tad too much in the background). Thanks also for your nice comment on the guitar. I struggled with it, and to be perfectly honest, I'm still not 100% satisfied. But you have to let got sometime! Again, I appreciate your words. Cheers.

some crazy &mdash 12/08/07 - 11:15:01 PM
changes in this the timing is very complex! I like that it offsets the stability of the song but does not throw it off I dont know if that makes sense. Oh the poetry in this top notch excellent!

Hi there &mdash 12/08/07 - 11:35:06 PM
Thanks for stopping by, and thank you very much for your comment. I appreciate your compliment on the lyrics. I'm really interested in what you say about the timing, and yes, I think it makes perfect sense! The song is - in one sense - very "straight-ahead", but the vocal doesn't always follow the pattern. I hope it works, anyway. Once again, thanks for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it. Cheers.

Nice sound David! &mdash 12/09/07 - 05:17:16 AM
Lovely acoustic guitars - their placement in the sound stage is really effective. Bass playing is spot on, and the strings and vocals also. Song works really well. No nits to pick.
Like it.

Thanks a lot &mdash 12/09/07 - 12:14:54 PM
I'm glad you like the sound. As you know I'm a fan of your mixing and mastering abilities, and I'm chuffed you think this sounds good. Also delighted with your comments on the bass. I had problems mixing it in properly (it sounded too loud and boomy at one stage) and it took a while to get it to sound like this. Every time I'm struggling with bass sound I remember your comment that it's kind of a "black art"! Too true. Thanks again for taking the time. I appreciate it. Peace.

Hands down.. &mdash 12/09/07 - 05:19:26 AM
... best vocal you've done, very mature and wise. Lovely arrangement, lovely harmonies, a beautiful melancholic song.

Wonderful - back with a bang friend!

10's all round - this is a stunner.

I really appreciate your comments. "Wise" is not a word I'd think to apply to my songs, but I'll take it. Definitely a melancholic vibe, for sure - something I tend to do a lot. No wonder I love Pink Floyd so much! Thanks again. It's good to be back! Cheers.

I wondered &mdash 12/09/07 - 05:19:46 AM
where you'd got to, but it's good to see you back. I think you were the very first to comment on my first song when I joined MJ last May. Anyhow, like Peter, I too think this is your best (since I was here). I always liked your guitar sound, but the whole thing sounds so nice and well balanced; love the lead and your vocal too, the lyrics are nicely thought out, so maybe your 'life getting in the way' has given you some good subjects to write about. I like that last line...."Take a picture with your favorite smile in place. Tell me do you even recognize that face?"...... I know that feeling too, regards M

I'm glad you enjoyed this one, and I'm flattered you think this is my best yet. Yeah, what can you do but take the curve balls life throws at you, and turn it into music! Glad you liked the guitar tracks (there are a lot of them and i was afraid they might sound a bit too "busy") and the balance overall. Thanks again for taking the time to stop by and comment; I appreciate it. Cheers.

Strong return.... &mdash 12/09/07 - 01:06:15 PM
A good, solid song and a very effective arrangement... I like the guitars and the bass, including the Frippertronicly sustained lead fills....

I think the balance of elements might be a little stronger in the headphones than on speakers, where a touch more clarity to the vocal would be cool, but as Neil would say, that's a nit...

I really do love examples of good songwriting, and this is one. That last pair of lines is very strong, almost Lennon-McCartney or Richard Shindell... Words saying more than they say...

Glad you stopped by to listen; I always value your opinion. Love the comment on the lead! Very interested to hear your point about the vocal in the mix. Do you mean that it's buried in the mix on headphones? I appreciate the constructive feedback. I'm very very flattered by your comparisons on the lyrics. I like those lines too. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for taking the time. Cheers. Peace.

Yeah, I guess I wasn't clear... &mdash 12/10/07 - 07:33:14 AM
I'm saying that the vocal is clearer over headphones than over my speakers... Tweaking the mix on speakers might make it a little clearer...

heavy stuff? &mdash 12/09/07 - 01:08:19 PM
Sounds like you've been through some stuff here. Those lyrics sure sound like you got over another of life's hurdles, whether self-caused or from the outside. But heh, you at least got a great song out of it showing at least another reason to keep on going. We all have benefit from you having that something.

Nice guitar placement and that portable string section you carry in your backpocket adds some nice flavoring.

Thanks for your kind words &mdash 12/09/07 - 09:27:10 PM
Heavy stuff? Just stuff, I guess, but lots of pieces of stuff that add up to a weight that can pull you back. But yeah, I did get a song (or three!) out of it! Glad you liked the guitar, and how it was all mixed together. I appreciate your taking the time to stop by and comment. Cheers. Peace.

I appreciate your comments. I love the word "lush" - and it's made me listen to the song in a new way. Glad you liked the lyrics and the guitar sound. I struggled with that for quite a while, even thought about an acoustic solo for a while. Nice to think I went in the right direction. Many thanks. Peace.

Love the separation of the guitars on the headphones; You were missed here and it's great to listen to you again. This is really strong lyricly, vocally; guitars are hypnotizing, soothing. Thanks for a great listen,
all the best to you,
Joe.

I love the line "I've got nothing but regret- but at least I've got something".

Nice, simple guitar solo- nice fit for the song and doesn't take the attention from a very nice vocal.

Much enjoyed!

That line just came to me, and it immediately spoke to the whole vibe I wanted to get at with the song, and everything else (lyrically at least) just fell into place. Glad you liked it, and thanks also for your kind words on the solo. Cheers. Peace.

this is very cool.
The vocals are sweet and the guitars are all in a row. Then the fuzzy guitar solo.
Nice.
kind of a Neil Young thing mixing, or more like, orcastrating with guitars.
The blend of your vocal delivery and the sweet strumming guitars...perfect

Lovely progression David, with clever changes executed with precision.

Really enjoyed your fine lyrics and vocal delivery. Harmonies are well placed and sound great.

Put me in a pensive mood. Love it!

Be well friend!

Hope the pensive &mdash 12/10/07 - 10:18:34 PM
mood doesn't equate to the blues! Really appreciate your comments. Nice to think you enjoyed the progression. I love chords, and the power of a change in the right place is immeasurable to me. I do sometimes feel I focus too much on that to the detriment of other parts of a song, but whatcha gonna do? Thanks for stopping by. Peace.

Mellow Musings &mdash 12/12/07 - 09:42:10 AM
Nice job, David. This has a nice understated feel, with a very pleasant soundstage.

That brief bit of tremolo guitar gave it a really nice texture, as did the strings. ;)

i just noticed this one. very nice. you got such good sounds, and this is a great song. like how the harmony comes in for the chorus, but is not in the verses. for some reason, i keep thing this would be cool in spanish (but best in english).

Glad you stopped by and thanks for the comment. I think the Spanish idea is excellent. It cracked me up as soon as I started thinking about it. I might even have a Spanish-speaking friend have a crack at translating it (of course, then I'd murder the pronunciation...) Nice one. Thanks again. Peace.

Worth The Wait &mdash 12/20/07 - 08:59:39 PM
I'm convinced that a rather long break from song writing only enhances your abilities.

This song is really beautiful. It has a brilliant relaxed and confident lead guitar. The whole progression cruises along and your vocals are certainly amongst your best.

Hope you get snowed in with your guitar this winter and come back melting the frost off your fingertips.

for your kind words. Glad you like the lead; it's something I agonize over sometimes, trying to find the right vibe. Glad you think it works here. As for getting snowed in - I'm afraid I live in Minnesota, where winter snow is pretty much a given; people just tend to ignore it and carry on as if the ground wasn't covered in a foot of white slush! But maybe there'll be a few weekend snowstorms..Thanks again for taking the time. I appreciate it. Peace.

Your knack for high quality production is something I have come to expect and actually look forward to.

This is such a finely crafted piece. It's very sensitively handled and while obviously intimate to you, it's easy to relate.

Lead guitar sears! wow.

Your latest is a great example - a personal song that speaks to everyone I think. Thanks again for listening, and thanks for your nice words about the song and the recording. It's very encouraging.
