Description:
Since I haven't contributed anything to MJ lately I thought it was time I tried to do a decent recording of this little love song. Music and most of the lyrics were written spontaneously and the original mostly sat on the hard drive for months until this morning when I decided to learn how to record again!
Playing and singing is a bit messy (the price for being out of shape, I guess) but I think you'll understand the basic sentiment of the tune. That said, I expect to re-record and refine this a bit later and do as a two part harmony.
As always, good honest feedback and suggestions are welcomed (and requested)!
Lyrics:
Once upon a day I saw this pretty girl
She met me smiling and she showed me round her world
You know I loved her then but I didn't have a clue
I just can't make it without you
Years have come and gone and troubles they been mine
Hand in hand we walk- we never crossed that line
You know I'd make it on my own, oh if I could
I just can't make it without you
Troubles that we've had would tear most love apart
Somehow we get closer you're touchin' all my heart
I never wanna be in a world without you
I just can't make it without you
Hardware:
Washburn acoustic, MXL 990 condenser mic, Cheap Nady mic (free with $20 mic stand), Fender medium pic, Mobilepre USB.

Welcome back Adam! &mdash 12/09/07 - 04:55:41 PM
Great to see you post a new one - and a very pleasant listen it is too. The recording, playing and singing seem right up to your previous (high) standard, and the lyrics are obviously personal and emotionally charged. No suggestions, other than keep em coming!

Hey Tim! &mdash 12/10/07 - 09:34:05 PM
I still have "Keep on Diggin'" on the ipod. One of my first favorite songs on MJ.
Glad you liked this one! As you can tell, it is somewhat personal (written for my beautiful wife). Thanks!! [ Reply to This ]

got the magic, brother... and sometimes the out of sorts vibe sells the song better than the polished rehearsed versions.

I'd like to say &mdash 12/11/07 - 02:39:48 PM
it wasn't rehearsed...but... I was trying to do just one continuous take and succeeded... on about the 12th try! So I guess that counts as rehearsed somewhat! While I like the vibe I'll still likely redo to add the harmony I hear and based on Harold's suggestion below maybe even a little simple harp. In any case I don't plan to overdo it- for me, simple is best. I leave the complex stuff to others!

Decided it was time to crawl out from under the rock and become a contributing member of this little society we have here.
Thanks for the listen John! Glad you're still around too! [ Reply to This ]

I love this one Adam. What a heart and soul song of love. Your voice communicates it all. Choice lyrics, sincere sentiment, and lovely guitar strumming. A keeper.
btw.... I have my own "Without You" song...

re-do? &mdash 12/11/07 - 07:00:45 AM
Well, it's not a disappointment after so long.
Suggestions? well, who am I to do that; I thought a lightly played harmonica just after the middle would sound neat. Some light percussion, such as tapping on the front of the guitar would go well here and there.
Nice love song.

Simply Great &mdash 12/11/07 - 03:09:09 PM
This is recorded so nicely. You really make so it actually sounds like we are getting a private performance.
Nice words too. Though your thinking of expanding this one, keep a copy of this one floating, cause it stands quite ok on it's own. [ Reply to This ]
Live vibe! &mdash 12/11/07 - 06:59:17 PM
This sounds like I'm in the room with you, sipping a beer and bopping along. This is a very nice song. I love the lyrics - direct and heartfelt ("I never wanna be in a world without you" sums it up for me, I think...) - and the warmth of the vocal pulls the whole thing together. I could suggest other ways you might record it differently, but I can't think of anything that wouldn't somehow detract from the clarity of this take. Very cool. I too have been away from the mill for a while. I'm glad to be back, and I'm glad you're back too. Peace. [ Reply to This ]
About Time, Adam! &mdash 12/11/07 - 07:12:23 PM
What a treat! Good to hear you and you're sounding great. Nice pickin'; I agree with Dajama, recording feels like I'm in the same room with you. Nice tune, lyrics fall like water, nicely matched with the guitar. Don't stop now.

You did say you were a slow worker. Great sounding vox as usual. You should post more stuff. You could probably sing the phone book and it would still sound good. [ Reply to This ]

Spontaneity &mdash 01/27/08 - 09:16:29 AM
Sometimes you can work on a piece for months and the result is so-so, and sometimes something comes out all in one piece and it's perfect. This song is in the second category. I'll believe you that it was all written quite spontaneously. Straight from the heart to the hard drive, so to speak. (I wrote "tape" at first, but no one uses that anymore.) It's simple, it's sweet, it's perfect.
Eh, since you explicitly allow suggestions, I could have done without that last verse where you vary the melody a bit. That sort of takes it from "I'm telling you how I feel" to "I'm writing a folk song". [ Reply to This ]
Thanks Vic! &mdash 01/27/08 - 09:32:16 AM
On the original that little bit wasn't there. For some reason I felt it needed to be longer than two minutes. I suppose sometimes it's just best to say what you want and be done. It's a great suggestion! [ Reply to This ]
Thank you &mdash 02/08/08 - 11:14:00 PM

Yes, I am unabashedly in love (18 years).
I'm actually in the process of re-recording this for her birthday (shh, don't tell her) and will hopefully have it posted this week.
