Description:
I originally recorded this in Garageband a while back. It was posted here before, so maybe it's familiar to some of you, but that version has been deleted from MJ. I wanted to improve a lot of things about it, and in the midst of re-mixing it in Logic Express 8, I re-recorded the vocal, the bass guitar, programmed new drums (EZ Drummer-Nashville Kit), added the electric guitar, trimmed back the organ and string parts from the original, and added a bit of the Ultrabeat Elements drumkit. I went for a bit more of an alt-rock Radiohead sound this time, since the original was a bit too precious, even for me.

Lyrics:
Dwell

I don’t dwell on any one thing
When I open my mouth to sing
I just let the tones come out
like stones
dropping in a pond

I don’t dwell in any place
when I look to see your face
I just hope to stand alone
when I
finally come home

And the ripples move out
sustaining that movement
And the waves wear against the shore
leaving nothing to stand forevermore

I don’t dwell on a distant past
One that I’d hoped would last

I’ve moved onto better things
when I
finished my training

And the ripples move out
from where the stone was tossed
and the ripples move out
but I don’t dwell

I don’t dwell on circumstance
nothing came of the chance
I don’t dwell on those dreams
that never controlled me

folk seeks new horizons &mdash 12/10/07 - 08:35:35 PM
Toots, I heard this on MacIdol and I like the radiohead influence. It is interesting and you always seem to gain a handle on any sonic sitution with the best of instincts. You probably should get a gig as producer for the next "U2" and quit your day job!

always impressed,

Hokey

Still have the first &mdash 12/10/07 - 09:50:37 PM
But I like this so much better! The vocal is clearly more distinct and to my ears more passionate.. the verse with "and the ripples move out..." really resonates with me for some reason.

My opinion: you made one of your best even better.

I like... &mdash 12/11/07 - 08:22:28 AM
..it.

The chorus really get to you by the end of the song, and I like the way it builds. I'm very impressed by the quality of production here. Everything is crystal clear, and sounds just great.

I think you've been successful in making it not too precious. This has the right balance of wobbliness and smoothness (or something.....)

Good job!
Phil

Intense stuff Jim &mdash 12/11/07 - 09:56:37 AM
Twin Peaks meets Radiohead maybe.

Production is very good and those drums sound excellent. Maybe I gotta get me LE8.

Cheers

Dick

The chorus... &mdash 12/11/07 - 11:38:02 AM
...is to die for...especially with the seamless movement into it.

You're quite versatile, Jim...both in performance and production. Fine stuff...

Interesting lingering of the sounds after the "song" was over...

Another cool piece of art...be nice to see it "live"...

Obsessive RH fan here. I have to say I'm glad they could inspire you, but this is something else entirely. It's not JUST Radiohead influence in here. Truly enjoyed it. Thanks.

Ambient &mdash 12/13/07 - 07:42:21 AM
I liked the original draft version of this track so much. The drumming is tasteful and drives it forward in a mainstream country ballad style that suits it well. Too much reverb and studio chamber feel in my ears, distracts from the intimacy factor for me. I love when you post stuff, you're on of my favorites.

aha! &mdash 12/13/07 - 10:16:50 PM
You've caught me out! I am afraid I haven't mastered the powerful reverbs of Logic yet, and I think you are indeed right. Too much reverb, in a way. I will have to tame them a bit, but there are some that really like this amount of reverb. Thanks for your ever perceptive comment!

well done song.Atmospheric vocals and guitar.Production is great.I saw the thing in your bio about Blue Oyster Cult-I've been teaching their songs a lot lately because of Guitar Hero.(I'm a guitar teacher)I always liked Buck Dharma's playing.
I'll have to check out some more of your stuff!
