Description:
I just wanted to share a recording done on a rehearsal with my band "bag of love". It's done solely with the Zoom H4 placed on the floor in the middle of the room. No tweaks or additions made after. All done in one take. I'm quite impressed by the quality this little recorder manages to produce. And it's recorded directly to mp3 format.
We use these recordings merely as documentation to what we do with our songs during rehearsals. It's very useful to go back and listen to the arrangements if there has been some time since we last played it.
This song is an updated version of the first song I have posted here called "I got the blues".
I have no idea what genre this fits under - blues, rock, punk, grunge... you tell me:)

it's Blues/Soul and I think the voice is great on this. Love the vibrato. Sounds as if we're in a nightclub listening live and everything has picked up so well in the recording. Great stuff, cheers M [ Reply to This ]

Yes, that is what's so amazing - how it picks up everyone this clear. It's a great tool for rehearsals, when you can listen to everyone in specific and review to find out if the arrangement or playing should be altered. Or just to remember a certain hook-line that suddenly came as an idea...

Blues to me brother, on the funky side of things. You must have alot of fun with this band. Tasty guitar.
Sounds like you may have listened to that motown guitarist of old, Dennis Coffey who played behind many of the soul groups during the psychedelic days like the temptations? He's still playing you know.

Thanks for pointing me to his guy. Impressive résumé. Have probably heard him without being aware of him when listening to the temptations and other groups he has been part of. Found his music on iTunes now. Will check him out.
Yes, we have a lot of fun with this band. Hope to get some gigs in a couple of months...

Solid performance by the whole band. There are some exciting dynamics and intonations that would be hard to create in the disciplined context of a studio recording. Lots of soul in this recording

Isn't it always a toss up of where to submit for music gendre? I would think contemporary blues. at least in my mind. good to hear a live take on this [ Reply to This ]

The mix sounds really good considering the method you used. I have a lot of old band practice tapes that are kind of like this... someone just presses record on the portable tape player in the middle of the room. Wish we had a Zoom H4 for those :) This is really good, particularly for a live, one-take recording. You guys rock. [ Reply to This ]

Neil on this - my main thought is jealousy, I would love to be able to play in a band like yours. You all sound great. Would love to see you live. Great song and delivery and your vocals sound top notch as always.

...of all the cassette based rehearsal tapes I've had over the years... No matter how good it was sounding in the room, it all sounded like aural equivalent of cardboard...
This really sounds like a band, and like a good band at that...
You guys are NOT grunge/punk, though... It's gotta be something with soul in the mix, but beyond that, I'm clueless...

Does that H4 have a way to mount it on a mic stand? I think a little height might get you an even clearer sound...
