Description:
No, your eyes are not deceiving you. This is not an electronica song. :) My friend Christine wrote and sang this song. See the description below. I've added some string layers, synth pads, minimal percussion and some final mastering/effects.

Inspiration for this song, written by Christine:
"This song was written about Kurt Bork and his fight for his life to stay alive while struggling with Cancer. He writes this to honor all those that keep him alive in the hospital, and as a remembrance of what he went through almost losing the battle many times.  As the third verse states, he survived, thank God, but unfortunately his brother who was also fighting cancer at the same time, died.  Thank you, Kurt, for the opportunity to put your story to song."

Song Credits:
Lyrics:   Kurt Bork Sr. and Christine Swanson
Music:   Christine Swanson
Vocal:   Christine Swanson
Guitar Lead and Rhythm:   Jeff Fink
Drums:  Ted Brusubardis
Synth strings/pads/percussion:   Miss Chaos

Christine will be reading your comments, so please direct them toward her, as she is the mastermind behind this beautiful piece. If you have commentary on any of the synth work, fire away at me. :)

Thanks for your comments.

Lyrics:
VERSE 1
I'M IN MY ROOM AND ON THE FLOOR
ALL MY FRIENDS ARE THERE
SO MANY DRUGS IN ME - TOO TIRED TO EVEN CARE
TO LOOK DYING IN THE EYES CAN CHALLENGE YOU TO FIGHT
DROWN THE FIRE SPREAD WITHIN ME
GET ME THOUGH THE NIGHT

CHORUS
WHEN YOU KNOW YOUR SURVIVAL IS TO MAKE IT DAY BY DAY
'TILL THE SICKNESS AND MADNESS FINALLY GOES AWAY
TO LIVE ONE MORE DAY YOU THINK IS...HERE TO STAY....

 VERSE 2
THOUGHT SPINNING MANY WAYS CAN SHAKE YOU TOO MUCH
WHEN A WAR GOING ON IN YOU NEEDS A HEALING TOUCH
OUTREACHING ARMS HOLDING ON TIGHT
THIS PAIN TAKE AWAY FROM ME
GET ME THOUGH THE NIGHT
BRIDGE
COAT'S, GREEN AND PURPLE, MARCHING I TO SAVE ME
AS FATE ROLLS THE DICE TO WAY LIFE'S GONNA BE....

REPEAT CHORUS

VERSE 3
MY BROTHER'S GONE, MY SISTERS HERE...THINGS SHOULD BE ALL RIGHT
EVERYONE KEEPS TELLING ME ANOTHER DAY'S IN SIGHT
WELL, THAT'S GOOD NEWS, TIRED BEING THROWN TO THE GROUND.
NO MORE FLAMES ON THIS BATTLE FIELD.. I'LL SOON BE HEADING HOME.. GOING HOME
WHEN YOU KNOW YOUR SURVIVAL IS TO MAKE IT DAY BY DAY
'TILL THE SICKNESS AND MADNESS FINALLY GOES AWAY
TO LIVE ONE MORE DAY YOU THINK IS ... HERE TO STAY
BUT I KNOW THINGS WILL NEVER BE THE SAME.

Very fine tune &mdash 09/14/04 - 10:48:43 AM
This is truly a fine piece of music. Thank you for sharing it
with us. The singing is superb. The guitars and other
instruments are awesomely played. And, YES, the synths
interplay exquisitely, creating a true completeness.

Good tune &mdash 09/14/04 - 12:05:58 PM
Feels like it is lacking tone in the higher range (and no, it's
not my 41 year old hearing-other songs seem fine here).
Everything feels a little "muffled". Otherwise, a fine tune!
Nice work.

Powerful lyrics... &mdash 09/14/04 - 12:07:27 PM
powerfully sung. The music backing this is superb too.
Quite sad-- yet the music is almost romantic. This creates
an interesting juxtaposition-- almost suggesting that
salvation is found in romancing yourself. That might be a
stretch, but I find this to be pleasant, yet challenging.
Beautiful really.

Laid Back... &mdash 09/14/04 - 12:59:13 PM
Smooth tune. Expertly arranged and produced. I seem to
prefer songs created with GB that include vocals.
Especially those that include the lyrics. Many don't. This
song is very powerful. Maybe a tad bit oversung. But
overall a very moving, heartfelt song. Thanks for sharing
it.

Very moving piece &mdash 09/14/04 - 05:46:35 PM
the strings are superb. Very effective. Get a faint feeling of
"Unfinished Sympathy" by Massive Attack off this only
more sombre and less upbeat. And that track is an
absolute classic. I think you sing it with real feeling too.
Like the voice VERY much. Sounds like you have sung a
bit, the vibrato sounds cultured almost operatic.

Just a couple of niggles. the bass seems a bit light, I'd
beef it up a bit and I'm not sure about the guitar lead line.
I love the chorus on it and it works with the chords but
the vocals / strings are so strong and purposeful that the
single note stuff seems a bit aimless. Not badly played so
much as superfluous to the track. You could almost
drop it and leave the melody entirely to the vocals as it is
or put a bit more of the strings in.

Small flaws in an otherwise excellent song.

beautiful song, very well produced, lots of talent. the
topic is sad & frightening, but your song is a powerful way
to celebrate life

As several others have said &mdash 09/14/04 - 10:20:56 PM
This is a fine piece. Very well woven together. It all
meshes quite well. Strong emotional content here that's
well supported. I can kind of see Ringo's point w/ the lead
guitar line, but don't feel too strongly about that. My one
little nit to pick here is about the mix on the percussion,
at least when played on the little speakers I've got here
(the clear balls that come w/ the snowball LCD iMac's) it
feels like the conga and maybe the kick drum are just a
tiny bit too far up in the mix. It just started to distract me
from the main meat of the song. Take it for the free
advice it is (worth what you paid for it). As I said it's a nit.
I like the song a great deal.

better (is my opinion).

Wonderful synthesis &mdash 09/15/04 - 01:06:07 PM
Ooh! Some very nice textures and layering in this piece.
Very expressive voice. The synth parts are just on the
edge of being synthetic sounding -- you almost fooled
me. Violins and cellos are quite reasonable, actually.

You have a strong voice, it gets almost flattened by the
mastering of the song. I really like your voice, but it
sounds nervous at some points... So I would just sing it a
dozen times and then record it again. :)

Thank you for the nice response to my song. When I recorded this I had a very sore throat and only put my voice on for other instruments to follow as guideline when recording their parts. I will definatly be recording my voice over again.
Thank you again. Christine

If you do record the vocal again, I would suggest you use the echo very
sparingly. Your voice is wonderful, and the slapback's rather gimmicky sound
is something you absolutely don't need. With a touch of reverb, your vocal
quality, passion, and commitment to the content of the song will carry the
track, and will easily create the mood you're going for. You'll end up with
a cleaner mix. Just my opinion...

This song deserves the praise and high marks it's receiving.

Great observation. The echo was an afterthought I had--Christine wasn't
totally sold on it anyhow. Thanks for your comment.

Well done! &mdash 09/17/04 - 07:26:36 AM
Songs like this are the reason Garageband exists. I wonder if it ever would have happened without it -- or would it have vanished into the ether somewhere above the hospital ward? A labor of love!

Well done! &mdash 09/17/04 - 07:34:22 AM
Thank you all! I should mention that this was originally recorded elsewhere--
on a different system, that is. It was imported into GB to add my synth layers
and some minimal percussion and mastering/effects. Christine will eventually
add some vocal harmonies to this as well. I am just so honored to have been
able to help out with such a moving and profound piece of music. thanks
Christine!

awesome...... &mdash 09/18/04 - 10:12:42 AM
Great tune.....very inspiring! I lost a good friend to cancer
several years ago, so I can relate to the lyrical content.

Only comment would be that at times the vocals over
power (or maybe over shadow) some of the excellent
instrumentation going on. Thats probably more of a
personal preference than anything.

Great work! Thanks for sharing!

great tune, love the falling bass into the chorus. it has this re-recorded sound qiality to it. don't know if EQing would help. the new bass drums maybe sound like overdubbed other-song additions, but the strings work really well. the synth pads add a lot. i like the chord progression and expecially the vocals. Christine is wonderful.

i liked your singing. youve got very beautiful voice.
and the lyrics are so sad yet beautifully put in words.

i thought that the echo of the main vocal could
be turned down a bit, but overall your song rocks!

thanks for sharing.

sacred piece &mdash 01/30/05 - 03:48:11 PM
I sure get the feeling that I am listening to a very sacred
piece. To me it takes a certain amount of maturity to do
music like this. That's really taking music to another level
especially in the act of charity and caring!

Thanks

Reverb and Echo junkie ... so of course I liked the Echo .... I thought the vocals sounded a tad muffled in the mix and think they deserve a cleaner sound .... the song is a very pretty one . I lost my sister to cancer a year ago.
