Description:
This is a track that I offered up at the Workbench and then Tim D. and Allanah had a go at it. I remixed it a bit, and I'm posting it again under my stuff. Think Six Organs of Admittance (psych freak folk). a lot of the noise is just me blowing into a mic with some flange and echo on, and there is a synth track that I did with Crystal running through the song. It's called Reverse Folk as originally there was a track of the acoustic playing backwards in parts (but it's gone now).

Steve, there really is no up or down at the moment. i'm actually pretty happy but the sad stuff comes easy. thanks for checking it out.

very.. rest....full and meditational. Really like this simple treatment of a simple melody which really works. The graphic suits this too, lovely cheers M

i'm glad that you liked this one. Tim Devine did a version of it as well, totally different feel (but cool). his reminds me of Traffic in a way. thanks for listening.

Very soothing sounds. I thoroughly enjoyed this Michael. I only wish you had some killer lyrics to blow it out of the water with because as you know, Your voice has always been one of my favorites...truly loved this.
michael2
i'm really happy you liked this one. as far as lyrics, this was pretty much an improv. many times i'll just mumble my way through the vox and then come up with lyrics, this was one of those times where i just left it as is. thanks so much for the kind words.
You keep on amazing me. I love the production and the fragility of it. Beatless marvel. Mean it. Just what the doctor ordered. It reminds me of Simon n Garfunkel, intense and a tad sad/melancholic. Btw, your voice!!! Delicious.

i actually thought of you a bit when i was doing the synth noises. and you know... I love Simon & Garfunkel. thanks so much for listening and for your kind words (they mean a lot).

to No Way Out a couple of days ago and loved it. It's fascinating to hear this and compare it. A great track in and of itself - and very different from the "spin-off", although the seed is there. This has a nice guitar sequence, but most impressively, it has the voice. Great vocal, and really good use of the voice as an instrument. Very cool, as ever. Peace.
michael2
i really liked that version as well. tim added a lot to it, where mine is more minimal (sort of). the voice as instrument thing is something i do to a fault (usually in mixing the vox way too low). thanks so much for checking this one out.

Really like the effect you have with the synth sounds. Your picture fits the mood quite well to.
I'm feeling that special period in music where folk and psychedelia were often intertwined at parties. After listening to the heavy guitars throughout the evening, there came the mellowness of the late evening and the folkies pulled out their guitars and mandolins for gentle jamming with the sweet smoke of incense and ...........in the air.
michael2
that sounds like a great party. folk and psychedelic are like peanut butter and jelly to me: 2 great tastes, even better together. thanks for listening.

you wouldn't let this one go.
A trippy ambient piece with a bit of a mental melt down that sinks into the cortex and grabs you at the base of the skull and doesn't let go til the end. Uh, that means good stuff.
michael2
mental melt? that's so cool. that's definitely the coolest thing i've heard in awhile. thanks for checking this out.
Heightened
Simply brilliant. Loved it from beginning to end.
michael2
Heightened. glad you liked this one, was thinking of running it through gleetchlab tomorrow (just for kicks).
davisamerica
you did it again! blew me away!
michael2
for listening to this one. glad you approve.

Where I come from we call them "backward folk".... I was having flashbacks looking at the picture and listening. This was a sensitive and
subtile job and a very pleasent listen. I like the twists and turns the chord progression and melody take as the song moves along. This is the type of stuff cobain would have done had he lived a little longer and mellowed a bit.
michael2
glad you like this one (i could actually hear your voice on this one). the guitar is all improv (you can hear me blow it towards the end); but then again it's pretty easy to noodle around in open G.

...to a "t".
Beautifully conceived and performed/produced...I really fell right into this one.
michael2
glad you like this one. i love stuff like this, but i can imagine it could bore a person to pieces. nice to be on the same page, thanks for stopping by.
love the rawness and grooviness this song has, yet it is still kinda pretty. good work.

When I listen to this the first thing I think of is Donnie Darko. Must be the synthy sound effects.
Surreal and dreamy - it really soars.
...man, I can't shake that Donnie Darko connection.
I gotta go watch it again...
Great!

that's actually one of my favorite soundtracks; i'd be stoked to be lumped in with that. glad you like.

Brings to mind Kirk Cobain in the voicings, the song structure and the mood.I can almost see him in a pitch black studio with just a candle or two burning, the tape deck capturing the late night moment. The mood here is one of softness and sensitivity, but still a feeling of hope and hopelessness, desperate, searching, completely vulnerable.A beautiful and yet haunting performance M2-perhaps I'm overstating it.Very moving, very revealing.Well done.
Blessings,

this is one of my more self indulgent pieces, so i'm really glad that you like it. it's liberating to do it for yourself and not care too much; but of course being an egotistical musician type, i love when people appreciate what i'm doing. thanks for checking this one out.
DWL
would be doing now I reckon.
Downbeat, evocative and atmospheric.
I like the hint of a build that keeps you waiting for a big wig-out and yet it's all kept under control.
Nice one
Cheers

like the feeling that this conveys and the relaxed playing and soothing vocal. Could almost be a lullaby. Lovely.

I listened to this, and I, like DWL, felt a Nick Drakeish appeal, but it's truly an appeal from your own heart. I hit repeat, and then I hit it again. Thanks, and thanks again!
Alannah
.. first sent me his draft of this tune .... I originally had QUITE the TINKER with it .... heh heh ... and sang a lead vocal all over it ..... (lyrics were about strong drug addiction) .... but it was a little overwhelming with what you had done originally and what Tim had added ..... so I redid the one with TimDevine and only added some backing vocals ..... but ... hmmmm .... one never knows what lies dormant in my Hard Drive does one ....... I like this sweet quiet version ... but you know me .... I may just tinker again ..... (don;t worry nothing will be posted without prior listens and permissions etc.).
timothy devine
You brought the vocals up,or no?
Sounds real good.
I was just getting this out of my head, and, kept seeing it on the 3 lists and thinking...what da
then ...its back...

these days - and I'm not complaining one bit. Love this mix - a great tune keeps morphing. I could hear East Psych flowing in and out of this. Maybe there's really only one song.
BTW - SOofA are fantastic. I just found a new fave in a different style - Division Day (Beartrap Island).
rsorensen
like this track a lot. great ambient BG sounds. very weighty. nice one!

recorded and performed. Are you in Open G tuning? The way that ending just keeps going is amazing.Great song.
michael2
glad you stopped by. yeah, this is tuned to open G; so easy to make things interesting in that tuning. thanks for listening.
Doadars Uncle
I saw you had a psychedelic piece, then saw all the fans, then I settled in...
Real nice! Long road to the deeper places... Whatever I meant by that!
Well done!

glad you stopped by to check this one out. thanks for the kind words too.

you mention six organs of admittance. I've seen Ben Chasny play with the Comets on Fire last year in Paris, and from his 6OOA work, I could never have guessed the guy was so totally crazy, as I've seen him there.
Hey, I'm digressing from you song:it's making me tripping out I guess, especially these swooshing sounds near the end.
As usual, great vocals... truly an impressive work, Michael !!!!! Love the sound in this one too!!!!!!!
Respectfully,
Wade
