Description:
Steve had death on his mind. One day, while driving home humming this tune, the lyric came:
OHHH,
WE’RE GONNA DIE
WE’RE GONNA DIE
AND LEAVE THE CHAOS OF OUR LIVES
It's not meant as fatalistic or suicidal. This is a song about the power of death - almost looking forward to it, a celebration, the next step in the journey.
We hope you enjoy our first collaborative effort.
Lyrics:
OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
WE’RE GONNA DIE
WE’RE GONNA DIE
LEAVE THE CHAOS OF OUR LIVES
OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
WE’RE GONNA DIE
WE’RE GONNA DIE
LEAVE THE CHAOS OF OUR LIVES
BACK TO THE BEDROOM BABY
FEAR OF BIRTH AND THE SPACE WHERE YOU LAID ME
YOUR SEX IS SHINING LIKE A COMET IN A DIRTY SKY
WHEN TODAY WON’T LISTEN
AND TOMORROW’S HIDDEN
WHERE IS THE STING?
WHERE’S THE VICTORY?
WHERE’S THE VICTORY?
YEAH
OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
WE’RE GONNA DIE
WE’RE GONNA DIE
LEAVE THE CHAOS OF OUR LIVES
WHEN THE MONEY’S GONE, BABE
OUR CLYDE AND BONNIE DAYS OUT GUNNED, BABE
WHEN ALL THE LOVE HAS BEEN MADE
WHEN TODAY’S A PRISON
AND TOMORROW’S MISSING
JOHNNIE SAW THE SKULL BENEATH THE SKIN
BEQUEATH THE MEANING
BEQUEATH THE MEANING
OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
WE’RE GONNA DIE
WE’RE GONNA DIE
LEAVE THE CHAOS OF OUR LIVES
BACK TO THE BEDROOM BABY
THE FEAR OF HEAVEN OR THE PAIN OF LIVIN’
GIVE YOUR BODY TO THE ENDLESS JUNK OF LIFE
WHEN TODAY WON’T LISTEN
AND TOMORROW’S HIDDEN
WHERE IS THE STING?
WHERE’S THE VICTORY?
WHERE’S THE VICTORY?
YEAH
OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
WE’RE GONNA DIE
WE’RE GONNA DIE
AND LEAVE THE CHAOS OF OUR LIVES
AND YOU WILL
WIPE THE TEARS FROM OUR EYES
WIPE THE TEARS FROM OUR EYES
WIPE THE TEARS FROM OUR EYES
AND YOU WILL
WIPE THE TEARS FROM OUR EYES
WIPE THE TEARS FROM OUR EYES

Bob, this is nuts, edgy, extrovert, original ... therefore i love it! Again this shows steve's huge singing range and surely he is the best you can have for a song like this. this time i don't compare this one to songs of other bands and i don't tell you, that it reminds me a stone's throw away of Arcade Fire.
great job, guys! [ Reply to This ]

Alex, you are always on the edge. Thanks for the comments.
Steve does have a seemingly unlimited range of singing styles (make that STYLES).
Should the next MacJams Challenge be to invite artists to write a song that Steve Craig can't sing to?

I love that chorus. I didn't know what to expect when I first read it. I thought, now, how's Steve going to pull it off? But it just sounds natural. Fun, like it always existed. I love that foreboding, chanting backing vocal. Perfect touch to a rock song about death :)
Great job, guys. I love the comet-like synths. Adds a cheery, cosmic, death-is-not-really-spiritual-death feel to the song. Also adds something you can bob your head to as you're contemplating death ;) [ Reply to This ]

Spot The Scripture? &mdash 12/13/07 - 11:20:31 AM
Steve had some really good ideas (or questions maybe) about death (and sex). I felt he was too young for the sex talk, so I looked to the Bible for some inspiration on the subject of death. Without sharing the verses I found, I'll tell you that this poet Steve Craig took what little input I offered (very little) and made it his own and makes it work beautifully in my stringent eye (and my other eye too).
Me thinks Steve should read the Bible more often. [ Reply to This ]

Bob sent me this a while back... it kinda reminded me of Laurie Anderson/ Big Scienece at the time ... i loved it immediately, and sent him back a badly warbling vocal. I love his mix on this ... a big wall of sound .
Lyrically ... another song about sex 'n' death, buoth favs of mine, as they're still taboo but something we all experience (well, death at least). This song reflects various view points, hence the biblical allusions and lines 'borrowed' from TS Eliot. I actually think this is quite a positive song!
Anyway, I'm just sooo happy to finally collab with my mate Bob ... more to come hopefully!

that how this genre should be called. The organ gives it an eerie christmas feeling. Enlisting St Paul and T.S Eliot, unappetizing characters as they were IMHO, can't go wrong lyrically. The whole is perfectly stitched and is really, well, transcendant. [ Reply to This ]

How's that fancy Robot Guitar of yours?
My life has stepped in the way of my music and art for the time being (where did that expression come from? As a kid I thought it was 'Time Bean'). Steve's nursed this song for months now and it just suddenly arrived at my doorstep.

Death is big. But this is bigger. Awesome anthem. I want this played at my funeral, right after Chris Whitley's song "Dirt Floor",... you know, to bring the crowd to it's feet, as it were....;-)
The distorted horn-like moaning synths. Steve's monster-as-usual vocals. I love when he wails! I dig the military drums, something I usually have a fit with, but they totally work in this.
Good job guys. But, I'm jealous.

We don't wanna be late.
I speak for Steve when I say that he learned everything he knows about production and wailing from you..... or, maybe you showed him a few production tricks and he always knew how to wail. I guess I better not speak for Steve.
I think this Macjams community is going to go down in history as the best educational resource for musicians ever. The comments and the forums have been the greatest help for me. When I listen to the first few songs of mine, I can't believe how terrible they sound. I'm surprised you guys tolerated me. Oh wait, no one said they were tolerating me, did they?
Thanks!

and terrific collaboration. The lyrics are excellent. I don't remember who said the meaning of life is death, but he had a point. The inevitable end, and the subsequent sheer ephemerality (is that a word?) of everything, well, isn't that what makes life so sweet? This is a great track. Love the keyboard sounds, and Steve's singing is outstanding as ever. very nice work. Kudos to you both. Peace. [ Reply to This ]
