Description:
I originally wrote this song in 2002 and recorded it, but recently decided to take a fresh crack at it from scratch. It originally was to have an anthem-y Bruce Springsteen sound to it, but a LSP song it is not. It's kinda about being able to express yourself emotionally and be honest while living inside the male shell. Lemme know what you think. I did everything on this one.

Oh: that's me by the way, on the beach in Rhode Island where I was born when I was about 3. Singing my own little private song as usual...

Lyrics:
Come Clean
© 2002 Philip VanDusen

Wherever did you come from
What’s your history
A snapshot of a boy
And his quiet apathy

(Chorus)
I wouldn’t say that you’re angry
I wouldn’t call you mean
But you’d probably be a better man
If you’d just come clean

You never mention lovers
Or nights you’ve felt alive
Your secrets are your candles
Lead the way into the night

A calmness came upon you
When you drank your fill
And that ain’t no mean feat
And not for lack of will

(C)

Wherever did you come from
What’s your history
A snapshot of a boy
And his quiet apathy

(C)

the Boss &mdash 12/13/07 - 11:21:39 PM
I guess the only way I was trying to channel the Boss on this one was with the slightly southern accent, hard "r"s ect. I was raised in the south, so it comes easily, can't say anything else reads Bruce, but inspiration has to start somewhere, ya know?

Great &mdash 12/13/07 - 05:53:05 PM
Rockin' song and the vocal fits great with that strong beat and powerful guitar sound. Lyrics are good too. Your voice does sound really good on this, regards M

Mov,
Thanks for the solid on my voice, my least-strong point. But it's fun, and that's why I do it! I always appreciate when folks with different musical aesthetics drop by, your comments are even more treasured. Listening to your Christmas song right now. Very Bing Crosby, nice!
Thx!

guitars &mdash 12/13/07 - 10:31:35 PM
Hey M2,
I do my guitars with 2 modelers I have. One is the modelers on my Boss DR-880 drum machine, which are really good. It has bass modelers too, which I use. I also use my Digitech Genesis 3 Guitar Modeler, which is amazing, you can morph between 2 amp models, infinite possibilities. They no longer make 'em, but you can get them on EBay.

Hey Bud,
I dunno, when I listen to "With Friends Like...." which I did while running today, I think you, my friend, know your craft a little better than you think...

Just in case you haven't heard it people:

Really great sound you're achieving; arena rock. I like the harmonies against the guitar the best; reminds me of Bad Company, not sure why.
So, you coming clean? Can't wait to to hear the next one ;-)
Rocks out; did you play real drums on this one? Vocals are great.

Thanks Joe,
My collabs with Echoroom have been so loungy lately, I have needed to rock out! This one is a little slow and plodding, but it was fun to do. Thx!

Great song &mdash 12/13/07 - 09:16:03 PM
Love the percussion - great driving beat. The guitars, though, are the thing - nice sounds, and great playing. The lyrics are outstanding - pithy and piercing, a portrait of a human being in a few stanzas. That's poetry, man! Very impressive. Outstanding. Kudos, friend. Peace.

David

Phil comes clean &mdash 12/14/07 - 12:04:06 AM
You know, I loved this when i first heard this, I thought the horns gave it a ziggy/bowie feel. Your vox are ace, and I'm always envious of your harmonies.

But the lyric to this, and looking at the photo adds even more depth to this- this is great writing Phil ... real soul searching stuff ... I completely relate to 'quiet apathy'.

cheese &mdash 12/14/07 - 02:34:11 PM
Actually I thought the horns were kind-of cheesy, but I was sucked in and could not extricate myself from them. The horn samples I have are basic Logic ones, which are pretty lame, or else I just don't know how to make them shine. Anyhow, thanks Steve.

And the photo, yeah I was CUTE back then, huh?, ...oh how things change! LOL. But I STILL have no hair!

More Springsteen-y (Springsteen-esque? Springstine?) than you think. &mdash 12/14/07 - 09:07:32 AM
LSP it's not, but there's a solid core of workingman's anthem in there; well done. Good horns, too! Makes me want to go down to the union hall, and throw darts with the boys. All in all, a very solid effort.

But, uh....... what's all this "male shell" stuff?! Maybe it's time you moved out of San Francisco and just came home, huh?

Yours in filth,
SJ

as usual Phil. Great harmony on the vocals, really nice guitar sound. You've go just enough horns so that it doesn't sound cheesy. Love the
rocking guitar solo. What this song really need is more cow bell .... just kidding.

Racerat!! I'm feeling this song! I can understand the channeling of Bruce Springsteen here too. Probably cuz I live on the other side of the water from Bruce. I really like the sound you got from your guitar though. I seriously need to talk to Santa about one of those modellers. Much enjoyed!!

Da Boss and Models &mdash 01/15/08 - 10:49:39 PM
I mean modellers. Go for it. I couldn't believe I had lived with just one amp all those years (and a crappy one at that) when I could have had 50 amps in a box for half the price. You tunes will thank you! Yo! to NYC for me.

How... &mdash 12/16/07 - 06:18:21 AM
...did I miss this for three days?

Good, solid stuff, as always. Reminds me of seventies glam rock for some reason - rather than Bruce. Maybe my ears can't pick up on the 'southernness'. The big guitar chords are a bit Gary Glitter aren't they?

Whatever....it grooves nicely, and I love the repetative vocal phrase at the end......and the long fade out. Why aren't there more long fade-outs on MacJams????

Nice.

Shows maturity &mdash 01/01/08 - 12:41:34 AM
I think this songs shows that it's been written, recorded, tweaked, re-recorded, etc.... It's well worked over. As far as your voice, it's been produced well enough for no one to know whether its a strong point of yours or not (plus I think it's better than you realize). There are enough tone deaf pop artists out there to prove you can do anything with a studio :S... you have a head start cause you can actually sing! :)

Great stuff...

This somehow reminds me of Bowie (musically). Outstanding rock song. Nice and full. Very good lyrics. You got a bit of a southern accent thing going on in the singing, which is a fitting. Oh I know.....Bruce....right?
I saw what others had written after writing this.

Wow! &mdash 01/15/08 - 10:29:25 PM
I love the guitar work on this album almost as much as I love the horns. This song has some swagger to it and the have legitimate swagger is TOUGH. That's where I feel the Boss. Fake swagger is easy to identify. Think of a Kathy Lee Gifford rock number. That's fake, lame swagger. This song has real balls.

to find this gem but is definatly going on the favorites list! Great work on this one bro best discription that comes to mind is simplisticly detailed. Lots of depth and talent but it comes off as though it was easy for you and that you enjoyed writting it, almost as much as I enjoyed listening to it.
