Description:
I took a back seat on this one. Will sent me a track he recorded on his H2 playing guitar and singing this tune. It sounded great and I thought it would be nice to do something different with it than my usual production. I had previously asked paul f. page if he would ever consider collaborating - I love his music and think he's extremely talented and creative - and so I sent him Will's track with liberty to do as he liked.

The result is what you have here with his piano, bass, strings, and harmonica arrangement. All I did was add a single electric guitar track, chimes, and a backing vocal. Hats off to Will and Paul - I love what they've done together - hope you like it too.

Lyrics:
Back in my old neighborhood
Brick walls retained the heat
Night was like an oven cooling
The hot sun’s long retreat

Men sat on their patios
Drank their sweaty beers
Listened to the ball game
The thin transistor cheers

Blue light from the tv’s
Bathed the narrow street
Women kicked their shoes off
Eased their aching feet

Summer in the city
the days when we were young
Summer in the city
Our lives had just begun

We’d meet beneath the street lamp
Sneak a cigarette
Boast about our hitting
The girls we planned to get

One by one we’d wander home
In the still and humid dark
Plan to meet tomorrow
On the ball field in the park

Laying on the bed at night
Praying for a breeze
Finally drifting off to sleep
Tangled in our sheets

Summer in the city
The days when we were young
Summer in the city
Our lives had just begun

...to Paul and Bud for taking my simple concept and turning it into something rich and beautiful. I agree with Bud: Paul's talent and creativity makes the difference, but it's also his musical intuition. He found the mood I was looking for in this song. Much gratitude!

Will, &mdash 12/13/07 - 11:40:14 PM
I'm happy this turned out something like what you had in mind in the first place. It is pretty amazing to me that the three of us could work from such distances and yet come up with something that works. Thanks for your confidence in whatever little magic I may be able to conjure.

I'm really happy this turned out so well &mdash 12/14/07 - 06:29:33 PM
I've been looking for a way to bring you into this realm for a while Paul. You played something few would even attempt - finger style piano is what I hear - which is just amazing (as in finger picked guitar).

Great lyrics &mdash 12/14/07 - 07:47:33 AM
Very evocative, a picture painted. The music complements the words perfectly. The piano is especially nice, dancing through the song. Good vocal performance, too, and another great collab. Kudos to everyone involved. Peace.

sweet childhood &mdash 12/14/07 - 09:52:31 AM
And what a delightful long-distance collaboration... Will wrote & sung a solid song, Paul really did add sparkle with the piano, and Bud, don't short-change yourself here... the guitar and harmonies really make this great... and it wouldn't have happened if you hadn't pulled everyone together here. Very warm Summer song for a cold Winter!

Bud, you deserve credit as the producer who put this together. The combination of Paul and Will is perfect, you made all the right choices on what to add and what to leave off. Great song.

Thanks

Perfect tune &mdash 12/14/07 - 09:05:55 PM
Will is really stepping into the picture more. that is great!

Lyrics are soooo true. Even though in the summer my neighbor cranks out the ball game on the radio so the whole neighborhood can hear.

Pauls piano work just melds into this so well.

Your touch of guitar brings it all home.

A home run!...... &mdash 12/15/07 - 02:12:29 AM
Excellent Pickin Will, and the piano is tastefully added; beautiful feel to the whole arrangement. As usual, I really dig the poetry. Reminded me of "Sweet City Song" ; a cult hit by Cashman & West in the 70's . I really liked that song too. Pick-up baseball and football games were the framework in which you grew up in our neighborhood but it's rare that I look back on those days when I'm writing. This song brought back some pleaseant memories. Nice job Mr. Bud the Producer!

You can take the boy out of the neighborhood, but...you know the rest. Glad you enjoyed Dog Days. Thanks to Bud's invitation a year ago to write lyrics, I've been able find a whole new creative outlet. The past is rich, so I'll mine it from time to time.

This is a very great song from you Sir Kevin, amazing playing by the masters (Will & Paul) .. One of the very best songs ever posted in that genre. Beautifully recorded!
