Lyrics
with hidden smiles
as the bullets hit the flop
he holds the future no one can top
another turn and he'll know just when to stop
disrespecting fate
and screwing chances on the hop

the crisp green new horizon unfolds
beneath the sodium dawn
he hears the crack of his fractured past again
as he walks that poppy-speckled lawn
just one last trick to show
he's no regrets today
just one more trick to show he's there

his timing's bad
as he steps back out the door
the arms of Fortune flop by its side once more
the crack of gunfire is the soundtrack to this scene
the loser readjusts what might have been

(Some say the world will end in fire;
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.)

Fine stuff
Nice combination of instrument sounds, that organ with the extreme trippiness of the guitar, as they both kind of resonate in different directions but still complement each other. A very atmospheric and touching song overall, and the guitar solo is lovely.

Another...
...cracking tune Sir Den. You're maintaining your high standards of intrigueing guitar playing, but this also has a nice atmosphere and cool groove. I think if you were releasing records on a big label I'd probably buy them and listen to them to death and then wait patiently for the next one in two years time....

The organ works very well, and - sorry to repeat myself - but the Pink Floydiness of the whole thing is engaging and perfectly rendered.

You're good at this!

Hey
you can't use Maj7 chords in a rock song!Page 112 of The Rock & Roll Hand book:"The Maj7 chord because of it's extreme dissonance may only be used in a minor key(e.g. Am to Fmaj7 or Em to Cmaj7)any other use of this chord is strictly forbidden"
I'm sorry but I'm going to have to report you to the proper authorities.
Seriously-a great song expertly crafted.Very creative-love the guitar work.

Maj 7ths are OK
in the Solemnus Arcardia Musicum from 1565 Palestrina writes "music will not always be static, there will be a time when Maj 7ths will in fact be allowed despite the dissonance (but only on a Thursday)"

Nice one Chas, keeping the bar high I see :-)

Cheers

For duck's sake
My first time of listening to any of your tracks but recent recommendations of fellow Brits on the site convinced me that I had to check out at least one of your songs. I was not disappointed. Vocals remind me of Robert Wyatt but the song made me think of a cross between Pink Floyd and the Isley Brothers version of 'Summer Breeze'. Very tasteful, enjoyable and atmospheric song. I shall return.

Blimey
thanks a lot for all the positive stuff. It's even found its way into a chart! rebsie, I like the way you picked up on the dissonnant instrument choice. The hook on the electric piano came to me first and sounded like something you might here in a Dirty Harry movie. Where the Doors slide came from is anyone's guess. And the idea behind the song comes from playing too much Texas Hold'em.

As for the Floydism, no apologies from me. I also love the comparison to Robert Wyatt. Shipbuilding is one of my alltime favourite songs.

You may have spotted there isn't a single maj 7th in my latest song,LB, notwithstanding Dick's learned defence of the critter. I have been warned off such behaviour.

The poem came to me as something which combines anger, drug taking and death. A happy accident.

Thanks again to you all.

great tune
Really dig the vibe of this song. I'm a sucker for anything remotely Floyd like so this is candy to my ears. Love it!
