Description:
When I first heard SmokeyVW's 'A Bell In The Valley' (a couple of hours ago) I was struck by its beauty. It sensed as a perfect Christmas tune. Like a classic. At the same time I happened to have two rare things at the moment: 1) the microphones set up for recording 2) time. So I decided to give the day to this tune.
There are many versions of the tune on MacJams right now. I deliberately didn't listen to any other version before recording. Just the original, which is here.
I play it in G# because I feel the guitar sounds good in that key.
Dropped D tuning and capo on first fret.
Hardware:
One Furch D-24 dreadnought acoustic guitar
Two Golden Age Project R1 mics
A Presonus Firebox interface
A BowerBook G4

Nice rendering with that clean touch. The sensitivity and care is exhibited beautifully in your playing. This tune flows organically from your guitar as though it has always lived there.
Beautiful, Peaceful. [ Reply to This ]

rendition of this song.Do you play with fingernails on your right hand? You get a really warm intimate sound which sounds like bare fingertips. [ Reply to This ]
. &mdash 12/18/07 - 10:04:38 AM
I use fingernails. Actually on all posted recordings.
But I keep fingers angled in a way that won't produce hars or "flappy" sounds. This has also the positive side effect to enable a more ergonomic hand posture. But it is not always easy because my ring-finger nail has a different bend and will sometimes produce too hars touches. I try as far as possible to avoid using that finger on important notes.
Thank you for a nice and supportive comment! [ Reply to This ]

Dynamics and clarity are superb.
Fine, emotive touch that is elegantly restrained.
Every note seems a willing witness.
Don't know this song. Am glad I do now.
appreciation and best regards,

Nice and clean and like how it really seems to fit your style. Almost a John Knowles type laid back style. Nice ending too!

You're getting right to the heart of the tune... &mdash 12/21/07 - 07:15:39 AM
...where Bill has really crafted a standard...
Judging from the long list in my email that I haven't gotten to yet, there are lots of versions out there that I haven't heard, but this is exceptional. You've set the melody very simply and recorded it with a sweet resonance from the guitar...
A great gift from you to Bill, and a great gift from you to the whole MacJams community... Nicely done...
