Keywords:
Christ (13)child (17)Mary (4)Christmas (148)folk (351)king (11)
Description:
A folk take on an old Christmas carol, one of my favorites. Lyrics by William Chatterton Dix to the traditional tune of Greensleeves.

Guitar & vocal.

And another old favorite: O Holy Night

Lyrics:
What Child Is This?

Em G D Bm
What Child is this, who, laid to rest,
Em Bm
On Mary's lap is sleeping?
Em G D Bm
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet,
Em B7 Em
While shepherds watch are keeping?

chorus:
Bm G D Bm
This, this is Christ the King,
Em Bm
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing:
G D Bm
Haste, haste to bring Him laud,
Em B7 Em
The babe, the son of Mary.

Em G D Bm
Why lies He in such mean estate
Em Bm
Where ox and ass are feeding?
Em G D Bm
Good Christian, fear; for sinners here
Em B7 Em
The silent word is pleading.

(chorus)

Em G D Bm
So bring Him incense, gold, and myrrh,
Em Bm
Come, peasant, king, to own Him;

Em G D Bm
The King of kings salvation brings,
Em B7 Em
Let loving hearts enthrone Him.

(chorus)

How I dig &mdash 12/21/07 - 07:44:02 AM
How I dig your vocals. I've always done. And that is kind of odd in a way because you are not any kind of trained vocalist and the guitar doen't have to be in tune. But I kan listen forever without minding. I just love it. It goes to my heart. Apart from you I can mention two more artists that has that kind of quality. One is a man I heard making his debute gig on a caf a couple of weeks ago and the other is early Dylan.

Love the unplugged sound and approach but most of all it is the lyrics that hold the power.Much enjoyed your take on a classic Christmas song.

Blessings and Happy Holidays,

Yes, the lyrics... &mdash 12/21/07 - 09:29:57 AM
actually are three stanzas of the William Chatterton Dix poem "The Manger Throne" (1865) set to the tune Greensleeves, giving birth to "What Child Is This?" They are indeed powerful. This is one of my favorite Christmas songs... so evocative, a song of the heart. Thanks and blessings to you also.

Merry Christmas.

yes Jack &mdash 12/21/07 - 09:28:17 AM
thanx and Merry Christmas your way... Jack did you sing this as you played the guitar... or did you do this in takes... it sounds as if you played as you sang... has a very live vibe....

I'm almost feeling a little Christmas spirit at this point....

excellent rendition

And Merry Christmas to you... &mdash 12/21/07 - 10:45:15 AM
Actually this is two takes (not counting the little guitar solo), guitar and vocal. If I had two mics, I would have done this in one take as I have been playing and singing this rendition for a while. Actually while I was laying the guitar track down, I couldn't help but sing along to myself in a whisper. So I think that may have added to the "live vibe."

Scott, much thanks for stopping in and sharing in a little Christmas spirit.

cheers...

So many of these old carols are best savored with the eyes closed... and the heart open. I am glad that this little rendition was a satisfying listen for you, Feter. Best to you and thanks.

Yours remains one of my favorite voices at MJ Jack. Very nice stripped down take of this old classic. Also enjoyed the lead noodling on the guitar.

Have a happy and blessed holiday.

Still loving that Martin! You sound great, Happy New Year, Too. I know what you mean about whispering the vocal, lol! Me too. Do you have a pickup on your guitar also? I do, but I like the sound better using a mic like you did here.
Cheers!

Yep... still loving the Martin. Re: whispering the vocal- sometimes that is the only way I can get the rhythm guitar accompaniment recorded right. That's the case here. No, I don't have a pickup on the guitar. The Martin seems to mic real well with my M57. Good to know you think so, too. Thanks for stopping by to listen.

... and a Happy New Year.

Your vocals laid back, and cool as ever Jack

The little ditty of lead in there is cool.

Hope all is with you and yours.

How did I miss this??? &mdash 12/22/07 - 09:26:32 AM
Jack, your songs are always a treat. Just you and your guitar makes this more poignant than when it is heavily produced. You make standards unique and I really like your pickin'.:-)

... so easy to miss. Thanks for stopping in. I thought you would enjoy this - more for the lyrics and their message than my take, yet I am very appreciative of your comments. And thanks for joining in with me on "O Holy Night." Best to you and yours this next year and a Merry Christmas.

Well I know it is an animal, but as I have a naughty mind my first thought was... well... anyway... Merry Christmas Jack:)

Cool recording - it's like you're just sitting down with your guitar surrounded by your family maybe, singing and being in the spirit.
