Description
Mark Koch (markkoch): music, production, all instruments, backing vocals, child laughter
Alan Crouch (NorthPoint): lyrics, vocals

Thanks much to Mark for sharing this fine music for collaboration. The first thought that came to me when I heard the first verse was a Merry Go Round. And then… well I think you’ll see where we went from there. (round and round and round and round….) The lyrics basically wrote themselves in about an hour. The goal was a happy sound of cotton candy and carousel to go with Mark's calliope music.

We’re looking forward to your feedback, and Happy Holidays!!

Lyrics
Merry Go Round
Music: Mark Koch; Lyrics: Alan Crouch

When I was just a kid I'd sneak out at night,
Down to the boardwalk to hear the music and see the sights
All the people wavin' smilin' movin' up and down,
Feelin' the magic on the Merry Go Round

Some like the brown horse but I like the black,
My daughter likes the zebra, next to the giraffe
Just close your eyes and smile and hear the happy sounds,
Relive your childhood on the Merry Go Round

Bridge
Feel and magic and turn back time
Pay the Barker and take the ride
Forget your troubles and laugh like a child
Spinnin' round and round and round

Guitar Solo

Just close your eyes and smile and hear the happy sounds,
When you're feelin' lost and don't want to be found

Bridge
Feel and magic and turn back time
Pay the Barker enjoy the ride
Forget your troubles and laugh like a child
Spinnin' round and round and round and round

The youngsters ride with no hands and the grown-ups smile like kids,
Clockwise makes you older and reverse is young again
So when you're feelin' lost and don't want to be found
Just close your eyes and smile and hear the happy sounds,

Feel the magic and fret no more
Take my hand and just climb on board.....

here it is..
Thanks for posting your merry-go-round music. Like mine, it has some bittersweet harmony, which keeps this from getting too sappy sounding... I liked that. The lyrics weren't quite as polished as the last song of yours (as far as fitting into the meter), but still very good. I enjoyed the fact that your melody "went up and down", nice touch.

Thanks for sharing this, and happy holidays!

Thanks
Thanks Eduard. Mark did a nice job on the harmonies, to give them that bittersweet feel. I appreciate your point on the lyrics matching the melody, good to have that feedback. Happy Holidays, Alan

Rockin and rootsy. Very nice melody. Upbeat. Great vocal delivery with excellent harmonies. Another great bit of tuneage! More please...

Be well!

More roots coming :0
Calchas, thanks for listening. You bet - I'll get a couple more posted in the next few days including another one recently completed with Markkoch called "Save The Girl." We had a ball on that one, and we are about to start a brand new collaboration in 2008 which will probably be in this same ballpark. I appreciate how we have been warmly welcomed to icomp and look forward to collaborating more in 2008!
Cheers, Alan

Good post!
Alan and Mark - don't think I've listened to your stuff before, but glad I did. I hear bits of E.L.O. in the string parts - really good clean sound you've got - everything clearly placed and well mixed. If I was mixing, I'd bump the vocals up a bit, but only a matter of one dB or so.

Very good stuff!

Beatlesy
Feter, thanks for the feedback. Yes that Beatles influence is all Mark - he wrote this whole tune a while back and sent it to me for lyrics. I took a shot at a lead vocal that we decided to keep, and everything else is all Mark. I agree with the Beatles feel, and I dug what Mark did on all those backing vocals (and the child's laughter). I heard a happy Carousel sound on this one the moment I heard Mark's first version, and I think he spiced it up even more with some good calliope-sounding touches on the keyboards here and there. It was a pleasure working with Mark and I'm hoping to complete more collabs with Mark (and others on MacJams!) in 2008!
Happy Holidays,
Alan

Great feelgood song
Like the harmonies and the image-laden, evocative lyrics. The melody is catchy and memorable. Nice, strong vocal performance, and good playing throughout. I like the use and placement of the strings, and i think the whole song has an upbeat, poppy feel to it. Glad I came across this and stopped by to listen. Nice work. I look forward to hearing more. Peace.

We appreciate your feedback dajama. I thought Mark did a wonderful job on those string parts too. His song was so easy to find lyrics for - I heard the merry go round start turning the first time I heard the tune. Take care, Alan

Merry Go Round
Cool, sort of starts out with almost a reggae feel then turns and bites you with the rock groove.
Just before the guitar kicked in I thought it could with a bit of Guita.......oh there it is!! lol like it a lot.

Very fine tune all around (pun intended). I have a lot of catching up to do here. Great upbeat mood, and great for kids of all ages. The guitar solo is a real treat, nice phrasing and tone. Alan, same goes for your vox.
