Description:
I'd posted this shortly in the beginning of 2006, and in the spirit of polishing up a lot of my old songs in LE8, here's a tweaked version. I kept the electric bass, and the lead, acoustic and electric guitars, and the rhumba beat from the previous version, but got rid of some extraneous drum stuff and held back a bit on the drums, got rid of extra vocals and organ and probably some other stuff too. I recorded a new lead vocal. I'm pretty happy with the way this song came out, what it's all about. I'm probably not spinning my wheels so much these days as I was when I wrote the song, but it's still one of my favorites. The song art is an old painting of mine, oil on linen. It works for me...

Lyrics:
Spinning my wheels

Ive been spinning my wheels for a long time now
Ive gotten used to how it feels to put the cart before the plow
If there was a magic wand to wave to move me up to the top of the heap
Once I get up to that rarified air that be a good excuse to take a giant leap.

Spinning and spinning, spinning my wheels
But everyday another truths revealed

If you ask me, theres no point berating your surroundings
Those four walls will only reflect back and the tap, tap, tapping becomes a pounding
Tiny cracks become canyons, shattered glass becomes shards
But you didnt ask me, did you? So youll have to play your own cards

Spinning and spinning, spinning my wheels
Day by day its losing its appeal

Someday Ill get somewhere or maybe Ill just turn around
and see how far Ive gotten
And marvel at all that covered ground
Look down and wonder how Ive climbed this mountain

Nobody said its easy, no that wasnt in the brochure
Hard luck seems to dog me, but who said luck was ever pure
The pendulum swings both ways sometimes it seems like youre knocking heads
But if there wasnt a way to come out on top, Id never get out of bed

Spinning and spinning, spinning my wheels
But thats what keeps it real, thats something I can feel, etc

Jim. Production sounds excellent - all really well put together. I like songs with spinning in them!

Getting tired &mdash 12/26/07 - 06:33:45 AM
of saying all these nice things about your music, Jim. Maybe you should post a clunker every once in a while to keep things interesting!

I jest, of course. Your drive toward perfection does set a good example for us all and demonstrates thtat even the finest songs can be tweaked and improved upon. I thank you for those high standards!

wonderful attention &mdash 12/26/07 - 06:03:15 PM
to production and detail... the vocal performance is one of tired passion... I can hear the sincerity, along side the muted despiration... a nice touch... the trax are casual and relaxed... the atmosphere created really strengthens your theme here.... this is one that I would have faded, and perhaps let it linger a bit too long, instead of the abrupt end... you know the spinning just goes on & on... maybe

excellent work Jim

Thanks for the comment! &mdash 12/27/07 - 11:30:27 AM
A lot of the time I do go on too long, but the basis of this song was an acoustic guitar recording that I did in one take and it ended just like this, so when building the song around that recording. I guess I do that a lot, set up the mic and just play a pattern of chords and riffs for a while until it seems right to end. And then I wrote the words, and the rest fell in around that. Maybe I wouldn't be spinning my wheels so much if I had more of a plan! LOL

Instant &mdash 12/26/07 - 06:24:01 PM
connection here. A wonderful full sound on the guitars and your voice shines. Powerful lyrically as well.

A beautiful track &mdash 12/27/07 - 06:40:54 PM
very nice sound, and some excellent lyrics. I especially love the sensory images ("the tap, tap, tap becomes a pounding") and it's all given real spirit by the vocal delivery. Your voice carries great pathos and expresses the ideas behind the song perfectly. Terrific production and lovely arrangement. Nice work. Peace.

I haven't &mdash 12/28/07 - 01:18:15 PM
heard the original, but this is a great song beautifully recorded. Those electric guitar riffs in the background hold the song together like glue.Very fine vocal performance.Well done!

Blimey... &mdash 12/31/07 - 09:22:56 AM
...it just keeps on coming. I've never really thought of it before, but this brings to mind Nick Cave - as others have said, there is a world weariness in your voice, and a meloncholy in the melody; and the looseness of the playing is very Bad Seeds.

And the final line is a killer....

Very good indeed,

Phil
