Great track. Love the chords and the "dry" sound ,a bit of Monk's accents .

As much as this is a fun composition, it's not all that much in Oscar's spirit as Monk's.

Cool stuff, though, on its own merits.

Monk too &mdash 02/12/08 - 09:25:08 AM
Yes, Monk touches appear throughout 13 MASKS and in many ways I wanted to write these songs in response to the inspiration he, particularly, brought to my music.

Great tribute to Oscar with that walking left hand and I agree with Henri also has a Monk bopness to it. Great performance.

to Oscar...there aren't many of his generation left. They had a direct connection to jazz.Your versatility is quite amazing.I have heard you play just about every style of music and you do them all extremely well. This is a cool piece!

Very cool track Tobin. I love the interplay between the two hands. I had the pleasure of seeing Oscar Peterson live once. What a talent. He sure was a monster on the keys.

much energy &mdash 12/29/07 - 10:35:53 AM
I can imagine a pantomime artist doing a show to this music... some parts even have the mood that was present in the early Charlie Chaplin movies. The dry sound coupled with the fast moves makes it come out a bit aggressive. You must have taken out some energy when you recorded this:)

Sounds extremely challenging to play, or even to think it... I wonder how you work on such complex music. If you write it down as sheet music first, it must have taken a looong time... or maybe you just go ahead and record... either way - pretty impressive.

Now THAT'S jazz!!! &mdash 12/29/07 - 12:05:18 PM
He really was quite a loss, Tobin. This is a great capture of the SPIRIT of Jazz & Oscar Peterson!

But we are the ones who have to continue to progress the musicpast where we found it (like you're doing here).

Remember:

"The ONLY tradition in Jazz is that there is NO tradition..." - Miles Davis

That being said, you laid down one of the few track I REALLY dig (but don't tell nobody)...

Chromatisome Swing (tribute to Oscar Peterson) &mdash 01/04/08 - 12:32:27 AM
Tobin, I know I have no right to judge your music with myself being totally an amateur by comparison... I can only say what I like and I do dig the melody & the talent it takes to perform a piece like this, let alone write it... I like it!!!!

Thanks mucho,
Wade

It's a great recording, Tobin... &mdash 01/06/08 - 03:40:51 PM
Phenomenal piano sound, really sounding like a piano...clear, dry, resonant but not too resonant...

And, as I have to say so often, this is not my usual listening fare, but I have ears enough to be astounded by it and to know that it's somewhere out there beyond great...

I'm also astounded by that little line above that says that online proceeds are going to Simig/MacJams...

You have one phenomenal generosity of spirit, Tobin...

WOW! &mdash 03/06/08 - 08:16:25 AM
This is great track by all means sir Tobin, the playing is superb (as always). I haven't heard Oscar Peterson before as songs but just heard his name several times (I'm not a huge fan of the Jazz) but when I listened to one of his songs which was a tribute to Frank Sinatra I was amazed by the talent and thought that he's an OLD JAZZ master and was great. Great tribute to him Master Tobin, enjoyed every note played here. KUDOS!

Thanks a lot for sharing ....

Take Care

Oscar will be missed &mdash 04/05/08 - 01:07:25 PM
As a Canadian I am very proud of the legacy the man left, and will always hold him in the highest regard. The man was simply amazing, larger than life if you will. This is a superb tribute and I'm sure he is smiling upon this project. I'm off to listen to more of it now. Thanks again for sharing your talent with us Tobin.
