Description:
Michael2 offered a song called unfinished and I loved it so much, I sped it up, changed all the instrument sounds and was further inspired to write cheesy lyrics. I begged estellie to sing and she took it to another level with her beautiful voice and modified the lyrics to fit her artistic needs. Thanks Michael. Messing with your GB file was a thrill and even more evidence of your musical genius.
Thanks estellie. You are such a gifted singer and I appreciate the opportunity to work with you immensely.
I hope you like the song. It's a song about 2 people that never met and therefore, never fell in love.
Thanks estellie. You are such a gifted singer and I appreciate the opportunity to work with you immensely.
I hope you like the song. It's a song about 2 people that never met and therefore, never fell in love.
Lyrics:
HE NEVER NOTICED HERSHE NEVER SMILED AT HIM
HE NEVER ASKED HER OUT
SHE NEVER TOLD HIM NO
SHE NEVER SAID, " I HAVE TO GO"
HE NEVER KNEW HER NAME
THEY NEVER FELL IN LOVE
SHE NEVER MADE HIM MAD
HE NEVER MADE HER CRY
SHE NEVER LEFT A NOTE
THEY NEVER FELL IN LOVE
HE NEVER HELD HER HAND
SHE NEVER BLEW HIS MIND
HE NEVER STAYED THE NIGHT
THEY NEVER FELL IN LOVE
(CHORUS)
THEY NEVER FELL
THEY NEVER KNEW EACH OTHER
THEY NEVER FELL
IN LOVE WITH ONE ANOTHER
SHE NEVER WOKE HIM UP
WITH HER FINGERTIPS
HE NEVER KISSED HER THERE
AND MADE HER LOSE HER GRIP
THEY NEVER FELL IN LOVE
HE NEVER NOTICED HER
SHE NEVER SMILED AT HIM
THEY NEVER FELL IN LOVE
(CHORUS)
THEY NEVER FELL
THEY NEVER KNEW EACH OTHER
THEY NEVER FELL
IN LOVE WITH ONE ANOTHER

As usual, you really did it your way. It's still got the subtle Michael2 melancholy touch but you really made it yours, with your keyboard sounds, distorted organs, and your sense of humour (I like how the song it still sentimental though it's about no story at all) The chrorus is really a beauty and has "hit" written all over it- thanks a lot to Estellie as well, who really got in the spirit.
five_extra_arms
M2 had such a great thing going on with this song, it was irresistible to me. I enjoy reassigning instrument sounds to songs that are so well structured. I did very little actual playing on this song. It's 99% Michael and 100% estellie. I was hesitant to send my song idea to estellie because I thought it might sound to weird, but she didn't laugh and in fact, wrote my favorite line from the song.
dajama
example of the power of collaboration. The lyrical idea is a great conceit, and sung with tremendous beauty and power by estellie. What a rich voice! The music is great - lovely use of keyboards throughout (I especially like the sounds on the break, and the organ sound used throughout) and nice, restrained drums (although in my phones, the bass drum sounded a little low in the mix?) This is an instantly catchy freshly-minted pop standard! I just went back and checked out michael's original, and I'm just blown away by the vision of seeing this version in his original track. Kudos to everyone involved. Nice work. Peace.
five_extra_arms
When I first downloaded the gb file I imagined a Doors type keyboard buried within. I also thought I wanted a boy/girl type duet and I felt like estellie would be perfect for this very melancholy sound, as it is a common element in her best songs. After she blew me away with her first vocal sketch, I started to think that maybe there shouldn't be a boy singer. Her finished vocal track was so stunning that I couldn't imagine a second voice, so I'll have to wait for a better opportunity to match up a pair of vocalists.
I don't think I ever want to write a song alone again!
Collaboration is the ultimate!
The music the singing I like the way estellie put in the background oohs! The change up is real smooth and the synth sound brings it to another place all together great collab Bob, enjoyed it alot!
five_extra_arms
Smooth stuff.
Thanks Tim.
guitapick
...on a love song...
This is really something, people. Fine, fine composition and production (I loved the background electric guitar lines).
Beautiful vox...lead and background.
five_extra_arms
Michael had a single guitar track that is played in revers. Sounded great in my headphones, so I stomped on the RAT pedal and tweaked it a bit so it could scream throughout the song as if it were my boy singer.
Axgrinder
This is really good you guys! Just so happens to portray my online romance, as it were called! (Don't want to go there!) Melody is great, I think with this is not far from a "sale-able" item! It has a nice hook! Thanks for sharing.
Ax
five_extra_arms
So, when you mention the great hook, are you talking about your on-line romance?
I'm confused?
Thanks rocker.
Axgrinder
Well I guess what I was trying to convey is that, My online romance has suddenly turned to stone! I haven't heard from her in 2 weeks! Really sucks man!!! Happy New year brother 5EA.
Ax
five_extra_arms
Man, this would make an even sadder song if they never met but HE fell in love!
Good Luck Ax

Great radio ready pop song.Between the excellent uptempo rewrite and the strong vocal talents of Estellie, had I heard this on the radio I'd say that was a new song by Gwen S..Very nice performances and very pleasant listen.Very well done and much enjoyed.
Blessings,
five_extra_arms
I haven't listened to the actual radio since I joined macjams. Do people still use that old technology?
Thanks Daniel!
Feter

...to recognise Estella's brilliant voice (damned, I love it!). This is such a wonderful track, guys. Flows slowly and sweetly, and the chorus lingers on and on in my head. Very catchy. I'm enchanted.

five_extra_arms
Estella's voice has the same effect on me. A great thing to have stuck in your head.
I really enjoyed your new post Broken Lies. Really good stuff.
Happy New Year
estellie
"E - voice" I guess I'm one of Bob's hardwares now? LOL.
It was fun to sing to this. When I first heard this, I liked it, but I didn't know what I'd do with it. When I got the lyrics, instantly a melody came. Too, too fun for me. We'll have to do it again some time.
Special thanks to Michael2 for letting us all enjoy his music in this way.
I also love the irony of getting really passionate about something that never happened. I think it has "pop" sensibility, too.
five_extra_arms
My entire life involves great passion for things that never happened! Thanks for your interest in the song and for your real passion you put into the singing.
This might've ended up too comedic if I did the singing myself. That's why you're working on your MFA in poetry (or something) and I'm trying to be the next Dr Seuss of romance novels (like there are several Dr Seuss Romance Novelists...)
Thanks again, estellie. "E - voice" is an arsenal!

.. this was in the pipe, been eagerly awaiting it and
you lot don't disappoint.
Big fan of Estella, she brings this home for me and combined with a kinda 'indie-pop' (almost 80s Kraftwerky/Gary Numan in some instrumental spots, mixed with 60/70s organs) bed .. fine instrument choices and blends Bob.. catchy melodies, fine base to work from Michael2, it has 'hit' written all over it.
I like the kinda underground/sub-culture feel too and I dig the kinda comicbook quality: the Superman and
Lois backdrop is a cool comparison/association.
I felt the chorus needed just one more 'voice' (instrument or 3rd vocal track ..hmm maybe duplicating and panning evenly the backing vocal part might be enough, instead of just in the R) ..to make the chorus a little bigger and standout more than the verses .. and make that drop down effect going back to the verses... just my thoughts.
Second listen: singing/harmonies so on the mark, great song, fine mix- perhaps the last outro chorus *could* have a little variation of some kind (say). 'Tremelo/Auto-pan' the backing vocals??
That is such a catchy chorus. Great to read how this came about. Another successful Open Collab story.
Brilliant.
five_extra_arms
I'm so glad you gave this such a thorough listening and left such useful comments. I don't know about Michael, but I have unavoidable Kraftwerk/Numan tendencies that I think are obvious at times. Sometimes I'll try to bury it with a sound from a different generation/genre to see what it sounds like. Estellie commented to me that this kinda sounded like what the Doors might've done in 2008 and I see what she means.
Michael's melodies were so amazing on this song. He had something like 8 tracks and each one of them could be used to create a new song. I'm so impressed. Seeing the midi tracks was a treat in itself.
I like your comicbook comparison. I think we're on the same page. I'm in the panel on the bottom right.
I played with a third track of duplicated "ooohhs" in the chorus, but I preferred the one off to the side. Might be my inexperience with mixing and my strange decisions to do certain things for 'artistic reasons'. Thank you for mentioning that to me. I really appreciate having something as major as that to think about. Trust me, I will think about that!
Outro chorus - I didn't think about any vocal treatments. Great suggestions. Thank you.
Bob
michael2
you guys did an incredible job with this. i'm really glad you grabbed this one. you changed it up so much, really cool. i could hear parts that I remember playing, but with totally different sounds; which made everything feel completely changed. Estellie sounds terrific, I may be hitting that lady up for some vox at some point. great job you guys. nice way to come back after xmas.
five_extra_arms
Whew! Glad ya liked it. I heard so many parts in your song, I didn't know what I wanted to showcase, but I think the parts that i pushed to the front were spectacular (by your hand, not mine)
I say that estellie would be a perfect female counterpart for many of your songs. It was an easy choice for me and I still can't believe what she did with the vocals. Don't keep us waiting.
Thanks again Michael for the chance to work on something as cool as this was.
Bob
DWL
and that's a compliment :-)
All sorts of styles working their way in.
Good performances all round.
A small nit for me is that the drums weren't doing enough but it is a small nit.
Cheers
Dick
five_extra_arms
Never thought I was much of a pop song writer.
I'll try to fix that immediately!
You can blame M2 for the drums.... kidding. This Tall Nit wanted them exactly as they were (this time) but I do appreciate your complaint and I've noted it.
Thanks Dick.

Love the name.
Great Lyrics and Music, Bob your production skills are top notch and underrated here at MJ, Estelle has some nice vocals going too, good going!!!
five_extra_arms
Thanks for the high praise, Tom. You and I shall do a super underrated song next. You're a top notch song writer and I'll bounce with delight when we post our first CLAB.
Thanks for the attention and the continued support.
BranDaMan
top notch all around. Really great collab! Perfect 10!
five_extra_arms
You shouldn't judge me by my painted face alone.... I'm a songwriter too, ya know....
Thanks BranDaMan!!!
Vic Holman
Bob, it was a brilliant idea of you not to sing on this. sorry, but estellie has you beat hands down. wise move on your part.
Michael is great and generous to throw some cool tunes out here for people to play with.
Liked how you put a twist on this with making it uptempo, who would of figured. i think you must of seen a vision in the smoke from your backyard grill. i know i'm right about this. nice job all.
five_extra_arms
Vic,
I am so glad that you recognize my brilliance. (yeah, right) That makes you even smarter than I am!!
The truth hurts - there is no way I could add anything good to this phenomenal work with my vocals! Thanks for reminding everyone of my limitations!
Seriously, thanks for the brutal honesty. (OUCH! kidding) You know that I know what I think of my singing skills. Can't wait to throw some meat on the grill for you one day and show you that I'm better on the BBQ than GB.
Your Number 1 fan in Valrico,
Bob
The Infinites
& Ken. Now there's a combo!
You have all dived into the pool that is Macjams, swam around the ideas end and came ashore with this outstanding piece of collaborative genius.
This is what Macjams is designed for - you guys have certainly nailed it.
Now about the song:
User friendly, E-Vox is stunning, M2 a true tunesmith, Bobby D - a wizard on the "didn't expect that" keyboard. Too easy to say 'radio-friendly', more like world class musical entertainment that we all can share in.
Bob - lyrically, one of your finest moments, how can a story about nothing be so engrossing?!!! I don't know either, but it is.
I'm bagging me a download before the exec's knock on your collective door and say, "turn that off. Stop giving it away! There's $$$ to be made on this one!"
Well done all - great end to a great MJ year. Here's to more in 2008....
Jim

And get outta the pool!!!
Happy New Year Jim!!

it's just a case of tough love. ;-)

It sounds more like two 12 packs.

is really nice. It is great to hear such an in-tune vocal with what seems no reverb boost not gimmicks just plain sweet, very sweet singing. Plus the concept of the tune and the "never fell" lyricis are quite interesting. Plus, plus the cartoon look gives the feeling of an almost early Dick Tracky detective look, so offer intrigue to the thought of why they never feel in love.
Great concept
Great tune!
Way go go!

He worked the late shift, so their paths never crossed. Besides, she was a vegetarian and he loved raw oysters. It would've never lasted after a few grandkids.
Thanks!
buckhorn
never sounded so good. I never saw this tune going in this direction and certainly to a successful result. Brilliant vocal stylings by Estellie.
five_extra_arms
Glad we were able to surprise you with this. There was so much to work with that I think it could go any direction one wanted to take it. I hope there are more versions posted. I love what echoroom and racerat did in Wrong Sky.
Happy Trails, Buckhorn!
Mcboy
story and musical ambiance.....great performances by all.....love it!
five_extra_arms
Thank you very much.
They are really great artists.

work Bob. This sounds fantastic - excellent initial idea from Michael - great imagination and skill from you and lovely vocals from Estellie. I agree with comments above that it could be on the radio - it sounds so professional.
Cheers
Len
five_extra_arms
Thanks for the very kind words Len. I set my sites high these days, with high hopes of a good piece of music in the end. I wonder what this would sound like on an AM channel?
echoroom
a really original take on this track ellas voice is perfect for this, and this is a FEE classic pop moment. Heavenly!
five_extra_arms
Steve,
I thought for sure that I wanted you to sing the boy part of this boy/girl song with estellie, but when I listened to it 100 times, I didn't feel it was fair to you or to her to try to make you squeeze your might into this song. I can't wait to pair you two up because I think it will delight millions, but the circumstances need to be right from the beginning. There are plenty of boy/girl songs to be written.
Thanks for all your creative input over the months.
Your pal,
Bob
echoroom
Ya promised me a duet, then ya pull it away at the last minute!!! You owe me big time, Mr!
five_extra_arms
Steve,
I DO owe you big time. Sorry.
But don't you worry, Mr Busy Britches, I've got more than extra arms stuffed up my sleeve.
I'll make it up to you. I promise.
Humbly yours,
Bob

a great twist on unrequited love. Estellie did wonderful jobon the vocals and the production is excellent. This also reminds me of something Lucinda Williams might do - but with more achy breaky style.
five_extra_arms
Funny that you mention Lucinda Williams. I always said she sounded a little bit like our very own estellie.
estellie
I love her voice. Maybe when I'm older I can sound like her. Right now i sound like the chipmunk version!
five_extra_arms
I bet Lucinda wishes she had your young chipmunk voice.
Now go get a pack of Pall Malls and start working on your rasp.
ktb
wow, thats two michael2 collabs in as many listens. This is incredible. Estellie's voice is wonderful and the backing tracks are top shelf. Really diggin that organ track
five_extra_arms
I think it's wonderful that Michael just left this song for us all to enjoy. He's the Ed McMann of Macjams. I hope he shows up at your door too!
racerat
That's what I'd call it. The love that never was. I love Estellie's voice, calm and even...Michael2's original GB track and your production and managerial genius. The sawtooth synth is a cool touch, adds a bit of angst and drama to what is otherwise a more sweetened track. Good stuff Bob.

You might not realize what production skills I have learn from you, through others, but it's true. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.

I am not set up to post anything. I do love to listen. I appreciate the generosity of those who share their work.
musichead
I love the feel of this and Estellie ads alot to this song!!!
Man I have a song thats called unfinished...Infact I have about 5...they all need something!!!! :)
Great job you guys!!!
five_extra_arms
Post those songs!
You won't regret it, as you never know who holds the finishing touch to take it off that list of unfinished songs. When I heard michael's version of this song, it just made my eyes pop out. I couldn't resist it and I knew immediately that I wanted estellie involved. Good idea, hhuh?
Post those unfinished songs!
This made me go back to listen to the original and the talent here really amazes me. Lyrics are superbly written and the vocals are like honey.
five_extra_arms
Thanks for dropping by. Estellie does have honey soaked vocals. I just listened to a couple of your new posts. You have a really great voice. You oughta grab the original file from michael2 and give us another version!
You've really done a great job with this one. Beautiful lyrics, and really stylistic with the never-thing.
I don't really know how to describe it, but it feels "authentic" in some way.
five_extra_arms
Thanks for the comments.
Authentic is a high compliment in my book. I greatly appreciate it.
lavalamp
This is my first comment from home and it's perfect. Loved E's vox on this one and I can start down loading.
Great job
i love these cheesy lyrics! estella - you are sounding so good with each new song i hear from you. you have such a sexy laid back delivery, and a delicious vibrato - it's such a pleasure to hear you. real good backing, bob - i think you could bring the music - particularly the piano - up a bit in volume. nonetheless, it's a WONDERFUL song - such a cool sad mood. LOVE IT TO PIECES!

Very cool job. Yeah you did it your way :-)
Fantastic vocals, excellent production, an instant favorite!!
This is great song Bob, the music work is very smart and I guess that Mike should be proud of his word that many of the MacJammers here did their own versions. This one is great and you chosen the right person to the right position. Kudos Bob and Estella.

were in the original, but as I hear this, I simply get goosebumps (still after the song is finished). I need to talk to my psychiatrist now, as I fell in love with three people at one time and this shouldn't be normal, should it? Perhaps, now that I think better of it, I might have just a slight preference for estellie, which sould make it a little more normal... LOL
Thanks a lot for sharing such beautiful music, this is one of the most beautiful songs for a long time :)
branchgraft
...talk about a sad love song! ...but I love the psychology of it... true to the form of capturing the nature of romance... even the darker side. Nice piece Char!
Char
I had to come back and tell you that your song made a great impression on me. It is brilliant songwriting because it touches on the human condition. Estellie is perfection!
estellie
I haven't been here for quite a while, but remembered how good a time I had working with Bob on Michael's song and came back for a listen, and here you've just posted this wonderful comment yesterday!
Char, what you say is really nice, and I'm sure Bob and Michael would be very pleased to read it, too.
Peace,
Estella
five_extra_arms
It's so great to see you and hear you again. This song is probably the best song ever written. You and M2 are pretty amazing under my supervision.
(:
shavingronaldscar
love the drone effect the bottom end of that slightly, softly overdriven organ gives.
this is very, very far from my preference in music, but I gotta say, I love that organ...
