.. and thanks for the generous vote, sorry I wiped it, as I forgot to disable the rating (which I'm trying to remember to do for short works in progress, as a personal preference).

first time &mdash 12/29/07 - 01:39:35 PM
i have heard this one...nicely done.
liked the bells. i wished it was longer, with some massive shredding solos...heh.

Thanks Allen .. &mdash 12/29/07 - 01:53:35 PM
.. I'm shredding on the glockenspiel, fav instrument of the week! ;o) been meaning to try that ever since hearing The Eels "novocaine for the soul"... I happened across a U2ish sound too .. kinda 'hold me, thrill me, kiss me, kill me' or whatever it's called ..lol... no shame me.

Actually, my solos are part of the metal/pop pull .. but
I too wouldn't mind a shredder having 2nd solo, for contrast .. and if you want to lend your pipes/lyrics to this one, I'd be honored. No rush. Bring Chris Cihon in?

too short! &mdash 12/29/07 - 01:47:46 PM
Ah, this is such a lush to listen to, Alan. Damned, why so short? Do I hear some JP4 instruments;-) Yes! And great guitar work as ever. Splendido amigo!

Short? &mdash 12/29/07 - 02:12:28 PM
.. it .. er.. slipped my mind? hehe ... I'm writing it faster now, annually in installments, it's very tiring .. lol. Thanks Walter, too kind.. yup, JP4 :o)

Outstanding! &mdash 12/29/07 - 11:01:12 PM
This is great - terrific riffs, and great instrumentation. The mix is spot on, and the guitar sounds very cool. Nice work. Rock on, brother. Nice one. Peace.

Thanks David &mdash 12/30/07 - 03:48:34 AM
.. glad you liked this rocker. The trick was to get the new section to sound 'heavy' like the first section but have no
guitar in it at all.

I've actually noticed a mistook ..shh.. with cymbal placement in the new section and I've a tiny improvement to drop
one note every 2nd and 4th repetition of the glockenspiel/sitar part.

Oh .. &mdash 12/30/07 - 03:51:30 AM
.. and the pop at the very start is something to do with just muting a sample I had there I wouldn't be able to use at MJs... a famous quote from a film.

I remember this one! &mdash 12/29/07 - 11:30:07 PM
Really shows off your guitar talents.

I like the improvements. I even like the vocal effects a little, in the context (and you know how I feel about those!)

I'm loving the glockenspiel again. Can't wait for Riff' 08 :p

I'm very confused by the lyrics, but I'm tickled by them.

[ Reply to This ]
Thanks Estella :o) &mdash 12/30/07 - 03:33:32 AM
.. it's healthy to re-do an old post every now and again, apply what you've learned and new tools at your disposal, and this one was really short before and pretty naively recorded I felt. Glockenspiel is my favourite instrument of the week ;o)

Vocals are quite heavily reverbed and panned pretty wide (for that distant quality), the lower track is more compressed than the high (to even out the plosives in it) .. and of course, this high, I had to hit it with a hefty amount of tuning correction... they're just a guide/idea really for a 'proper' singer.

Ah, the lyrics .. glad that tickled you heheh. I actually just repeat the first line but it amused me to think like this site that came to my attention recently in the forums: http://www.kissthisguy.com/

Pity it's not longer and that's a damn disturbing picture :-O

Thanks DWL &mdash 12/30/07 - 03:53:56 PM
.. much appreciated. Apparently so: JP4 has it as a glockenspiel .. although I would have said xylophone myself.. and the xylophone they have sounds woodeny like a glockenspiel .. I always thought it was that way round... confusing.

Pretty weird pic that .. I liked it .. suited the mood .. made up of bits of gruesome fish and er .. things (as far as I can make out). I liberated it from here

Next installment, sometime next year... lets not rush things :o)

Niche .. &mdash 01/01/08 - 11:05:34 AM
.. in the market? lol. Actually, it's kinda weird .. that it's transpiring to that 'sound' .. the original guitar riff was written circa '87 .. and quite likely heavily inspired by 'Introduce yourself', out around that time.

Thanks Vic - I'll keep it on the back boiler.

Great Glock &mdash 12/30/07 - 10:45:00 PM
Yeah, you're shreddin the glock alright; I'm partial to all that fingerboard hammering at the start, though. I'll echo the 'too short' complaint, and Feter's arrangement comment. This could really be big.

Way too short indeed &mdash 01/01/08 - 10:36:13 AM
Great piece love the drum sound the guitars are awesome love the melodies and the strings are a great touch . The glock is like sour cream on a spicy burrito and you voice sounds cool cept I can hear that your using that stupid voice transformer or pitch thing and thats becomming such a cliche of a cliche for me . Your voice is great you need to make it sound robotic . Cool start cant wait to hear the finished song .Oh by the way great picture of yourself up there ; )

[ Reply to This ]
Thanks Benny .. &mdash 01/01/08 - 10:57:52 AM
.. love your food, savoury and sweet comparisons in your comments. The glockenspiel does serve to clear the auditory palette for the next (hopefully) tasty morsel. :o)

Vocals: I'm stretching myself a bit far in all honesty .. really to give a sketch of the little vocal melody/idea. I did 2 tracks- 1 high part, 1 lower harmony .. so I'm actually singing that high .. but I needed a fair amount of the pitch correction to be 'in-tune' - which gives that robotic vocoded side-effect (so it's not intentional) .. if I took it off/lowered the setting .. you'ld go .. "man, stick it back on again!" lol .. if I did it over and over I would get a decent take .. but I couldn't be R'sd spending to much time on the vocals, to tell the truth ..

Oh, on the pic .. you should see me in the morning .. oil of Ulay just isn't working for me. hehehehe ;o)

Thanks Neil .. &mdash 01/03/08 - 02:19:59 AM
.. I went for a hybrid on the drums. Still what original midi track played but I swapped out all sounds to DoD except the closed/open hi-hats (they're still GB midi- as they were proving a nightmare to get a decent sound from DoD single hits (having to cut off the open hits at just the right point to get closes just didn't sound 'right'). It's a simple pattern and something I could just about play myself on a drum kit, makes for a little bit more realism in the drum track. On re-visit I think I'd change the stereo field placement of the cymbal crashes though. :o)

Thanks for stopping by .. &mdash 01/11/08 - 04:45:08 PM
.. this one has always been a slow-burner one for me .. with the rhythm riff from '87 .. the lead bits 7-8 years later .. the first (ever MJ) post/upload I even used a midi file from that early 90s time I had saved, and used it to work with GB for the first time ever and provide the drums.

This version is using nearly all of the tools at my disposal now and actually progressing the idea quite a bit further with new parts/ideas... it's coming along, glad you enjoyed it.

I'll get it to song length eventually, rest assured. :o)

keep for comparison purposes for a while. I like to have a record of comments and how it's progressed so far. Still more to come eventually .. so now you have to remember you've heard it before ;o)

thanks! I do try .. I'm more of a fan of the eccentric British astronomer Patrick Moore's skills on the glockenspiel/xylophone myself... pity there is little decent youtube footage to reference :o(

Glad to get a new listener: I really liked your Riffage - some country influence gave me a kinda Lindsey Buckingham era. Fleetwood Mac thing at times, and the sitarish bits was awesome. I don't improvise, never have .. admire those that can very much and I can agree with sloparts comment...shows the possibilities with one chord .. wow.

You'll be glad to know I have improved it by putting the monitors on some stands (each made of 6 toilet rolls glued together in a triangle shape - got help from my daughter .. who is still to paint them black :o)) .. oh and I got a nice new LCD widescreen display (great for seeing more of a song at one time), as the other started blinking after being on for 5mins.

I do crave a POD XT Pro for my wee rack... and a bass guitar, then I think I'll be totally happy for quite some time.

only had a handful of new musical ideas to try with this over the past year since I first posted it (first ever upload here)- so I did in fact spend about the same amount of time on experimenting with Ozone 3 and JP4 (recent aquisitions) and put a fair focus on getting a good oomphy production.

bold and beautiful &mdash 01/14/08 - 04:27:01 PM
The singing along with the ethereal strings gives it such a BIG sound. I can see this expanded in many directions. Like it. So except for the DoD is this all you? Bravo

like Neil points out, I've not often the patience required for more subtlety, very much a 'go for it', 'in yer face' kinda
thing - especially when I was 17, which was when the foundation of this was written. I've mellowed alot since ..

.. any creative suggestions welcome, just send me a note if you prefer.

Oh, and yes apart from DoD loop single hit usage (actually a hybrid on the drums: DoD single-hits and GB midi kit- see above) this is all me: I sing, play el. guitar, did the little synth, strings, bass guit. and glocks with played midi (the bass midi I had done '94 with Cubase on an Atari ST and had saved a standard midi file), and did the production (so far just in GBv3) and used Ozone 3 for mastering.
