Description:
Feter of Iraq, stranded in Syria, sent me a snippet of a song sketch. I was a bit uneasy about making a song out of it. I didn't want to take away from or muddy what is so clearly very personally difficult... his song of longing to find his love and a safe harbor to live. Feter, I hope this touches something of the inspiration that sparked your soulful song sketch.
Thank you Feter, for allowing me to work with you on this song.
Feter: Vocal and mandolin
Jack: Vocal, guitar, organ, bass
Lyrics: Feter
Music: Feter and Jack
Lyrics:
The Longing by Feter
Everyone is leaving town
they say they can not not stay
the ocean shore is sending waves
that break upon this bay
it only sees broken heart
longing for a home
longing for that northern wind,
and a face that’s unknown
ah the longing

I love the homegrown feel to this.I love the bad quality recording to the beginning and end parts though I've come to like a lower than accepted bitrate of an mp3 - a bit like a scratched record - but the quality of the playing and the song sung is alomost like a wailing song at the beggininnng and end.And it sets the theme.Overall - very mystical in my ears and alot of purple green hues in my minds eye [ Reply to This ]
Homegrown longings... &mdash 12/30/07 - 12:08:25 AM
Mystical Feter, indeed, sets the theme with his intro and completes it with his outro. All I wanted to do was to expand on it and bring it back to him for the finish. Purple green hues in one's eyes says it well, and is what I take to be an amen. So maybe I am in the ballpark.
Thanks much Paddler... very appreciative of your comments. [ Reply to This ]
Very beautiful &mdash 12/29/07 - 11:30:47 PM
Love the transition between the two "parts" of the recording. The genius is that - despite the differences in sound and tone - there is a seamlessness of feeling and emotion that unites them perfectly. Great piece, Feter - music from the soul, and wonderful work, Jack, to create this. Nicely done to both of you. May the New Year bring resolution, and Peace. [ Reply to This ]
Transitions... &mdash 12/30/07 - 12:17:39 AM
Feter-"music from the soul..." indeed.
The transition was the hardest thing for me in this song. To make the two recordings seem to somewhat "belong together" was trickier than I would have imagined. I don't know how well I did in getting there, but...
The emotion part I could feel from Feter's sketch. That it came through in the song for you really is good to know. I was hoping it would.
Thanks much for listening. And may you have a New Year of peace and joy. [ Reply to This ]
absolutely beautiful &mdash 12/30/07 - 11:06:18 AM
I could completely copy and paste David's comment here above. The two different parts are glued so seamlessly together. A brilliant idea to bring Feter back in the outro again. This is emotions carried on both your sleeves. Big bravo!

Thanks... &mdash 12/30/07 - 12:35:57 PM
Walter, it is gratifying to read your comments. Thank you. At first I was going to repeat the entire intro at the outro. Then it hit me to just include "ah, the longing..." That is the moment in the song I like best.
I've done one other collab with Feter on another of his unfinished songs. He puts so much of his heart and soul into his music... it rubs off. And this is a good way for him to still get some of his music "out there" as he is now without instruments or recording facilities.
Again, thanks for listening.
Jack

Hey well rounded Clab &mdash 12/30/07 - 11:12:17 AM
Feter's vocals reminds me of early Leonard Cohen for some reason...really cool Clab! [ Reply to This ]

I am sure Feter is flattered to hear the apt comparison of his vocal to Leonard Cohen. Good to know you liked the collab.

I have to agree with David - the transition between the parts is seamless despite the huge difference in sound quality. Exceptional production and performance. A wonderful piece.

longing &mdash 12/30/07 - 08:17:42 PM
heartfelt feel and emotional song. nice.
Really like how a transition melds these two parts. The organ is a nice touch.
While I was listening I kept thinking it would be great if Feter's part would be reprised... and sure enough, there it is. [ Reply to This ]
The Reprise... &mdash 12/30/07 - 09:22:20 PM
When I was thinking about putting this snippet of Feter's into a song, I pretty much knew I would lead with his song sketch. the idea of a reprise came to mind fairly soon... The work was to blend it with what I wanted to do on my part. The organ came about as I realized there needed to be more to fill out the song... and the same with the bass. Both helped make the initial transition at the beginning.
Thanks Vic for stopping and listening and leaving your thoughts... you're a goodwilly (no offense intended :) [ Reply to This ]
Collaborastic guys! &mdash 12/30/07 - 09:03:36 PM
Man, I've really been missing out by being so scarce lately! This is some real calming and searching stuff! The amount of talent floating around in here is mind blowing to say the least! We should be the ones skimming off the cream, so to speak! The mainstream is full of corn eyed brown trout, if you ask me. Nicely done gents, nicely done indeed!

impressive &mdash 12/31/07 - 09:39:12 AM
Both recordings are unique and stand on their own very well. The contrast between Feter's sparse recording with just the mandolin and his voice against your take is very well done. How you let the organ snuggle up on your guitar and song.... and how it transforms to a dylan'ish setting.
You both sing with gusto and leaves me wishing it lasted longer.
Very beautiful. I think this is one of the best productions and performances I have in my Dadai collection. [ Reply to This ]

The way Feter's soulful delivery blends in with Jack's performance is perfect. The lyrics just really tear at you and make you feel that longing feeling we've all had to some degree or another at some point in our lives. I love the way it's book ended with Feter's original sketch. It really helps punctuate the emotion.
A wonderful tune, Feter, and, Jack, you really handled it with the care that it needed and deserved. [ Reply to This ]

this is so nice, you did a great job with this Feter sketch (I think the guy is a genius, I would have been uneasy too).you really did a nice job filling this out, kind of Neil Young-ish in a way. perfect instrumentation and I too love the less than perfect sound at the beginning of the song. i only wish it would have gone on longer. Thanks much. I have already commented about as much as I have to say on the song. I will echo your sentiments regarding Feter. He is an amazing musician and songwriter. And, aside from a Dylan comparison, Neil Young reference makes my day (nothing like day dreams, eh?). Also, it's very satisfying to know that you think the instrumentation fits Feter's sketch.

Big &mdash 01/03/08 - 03:05:34 PM
Really very nice smash up. Feter's recording has the totally raw and real sound of a 1950's field recording on the old Nonesuch label. And yet, it's strangely contemporary a la Devendra Banhardt et al.
The music you added, Jack, is very sensitively handled (nice pipes, too).
This is a beautiful track. [ Reply to This ]

sensitive collaboration... &mdash 01/15/08 - 09:09:05 PM
Thanks Ed. That is mainly what I was trying to do. I wasn't sure if the collab would come across as a unified song to the listener. Or if it would seem like me "making my own song" off of Feter's heartfelt sketch. So I appreciate your comments.

feter, i'm so glad you still sing in your deep dark beautiful voice - even tho the song is mournful.
good job of supporting that with the guitar. this reminded me a bit of the sad sad Whale Song by CS&N. "longing for a home" - way to sing it, jack.
i yearned for one more measure of feter "longing" with your instrumental at end before he went back to his orig strum. but i'm a happy customer! i enjoyed your partnership, brother boys!
