Keywords:
school (17)students (3)kids (27)drums (191)percussion. (1)
Description:
This is the result of a drumming unit in music classes with my 6th graders. After we worked together for 3 weeks, the students split into smaller groups of 4 to 6. They practiced (using body percussion first) then wrote out their rhythms, then structured their pieces, and finally performed for the class and were recorded 'live.' The recordings were put on CDs for each student, and finally, the kids voted on which composition should represent Nasonville School in this posting on the internet. So, I present the group 'The Mix Ups' with their composition 'Changa.' The photo is of the entire sixth grade (2 classes) with every last piece of percussion equipment we have at school.

Hardware:
Powerbook & Snowball mic

Software:
garageband

Thanks for commenting. The picture didn't get posted at first, because it was on another computer. It's there now. We had a good time with this unit!

in Epcot center &mdash 12/30/07 - 05:44:39 PM
they have a place, I think it's called OrisiRisi, where you can beat the djembe drums and play along with other percussion. The drums were in an alcove and open to the public walkway.

I'll bet this team would know just what to do there to get the place rocking

Some very nice beats there. Inventive bunch. You should be proud - they are the future of music (as well as of everything else!). Thanks for sharing. Peace, and a Happy New Year to you and yours. Peace.

They got rhythm &mdash 12/30/07 - 10:25:00 PM
Nice job, with them all playing together, even handling the accelerating tempo nicely in sync.

Must be fun, teaching kids to do this stuff.

Let's work together &mdash 12/31/07 - 07:22:32 AM
It's great hearing something like this and knowing how hard you and they had to work to get there.

Congratulations :-)

Cheers

You must... &mdash 01/01/08 - 11:33:11 AM
...get a lot of enjoyment and fulfillment out of teaching these kids, Kristy. Please convey my congratulations to them for the piece. Very cool project.

I hear some Native American influence in there. What's your student population like, in terms of heritages?

again, well deserved &mdash 01/02/08 - 10:10:31 PM
I liked their combination of instruments and how they sped up and slowed down together. Props to the guy with the bell or whatever it was :)

I hope... &mdash 01/06/08 - 03:19:10 PM
That as part of their musical education, you have introduced these kids to the legendary 'More Cowbell' video...

This is very cool, and anyone associated with it gets super extra coolness points in my book...

Hi Kristy &mdash 01/18/08 - 10:07:45 PM
Our 3 children have had the privilege of attending an academy with a strong emphasis in music. The choir teacher for elementary school is great and listening to your kids evokes many happy memories. (my oldest is now 16 and plays the violin quite nicely). Teachers like you are soooooo important to our children and there are not enough words to describe the good you guys do in this world. Thank you! I really enjoyed this one!

for some reason &mdash 02/07/08 - 09:16:53 PM
I'm not getting email alerts about your new songs...........

The song is good, but I really like the stylin' kid at the beginning ("...we're playin' tha CHAnguh!"). My son's school is heavy on the percussion performances; I think they're absolutely brilliant, and this is tops!
