Description:
ok...probably the first of many recordings of my dreams....i have long thought that recording my rhythm section live, then overdubbing guitars would be a heavenly way for me to record my stuff. The acquistion of the alessis io 26 has made it possible to record the bishop brothers, fran and bryan live, as we jam my compositions....for this recording all the original guitar was tossed and redone in layers in an effort to create a sound bed that would be cushy like keyboards...and i also mix in some acoustic leads with the electric.
this is the first real try at a multi track with the real pulse of my great friends and colleagues, the bishops.
let me know if the distortion I hear in the low end is in my ears only, please!
happy new year!

Ya know On headphones the seperation int the guitar leads are great everything just flows and the mix is perfect! excellent enjoyed this alot The latin feel just flows. I like the drum break in this wth the guitar just hittn them chords just so lightly. Greatness!!! [ Reply to This ]
cool!! &mdash 01/01/08 - 12:41:30 PM
that is great to hear. i know i can get it better than this....McBoy gave me some real great advice on drum micing techniques that I have yet to try...and a few other adjustments can be made.
The act of recording the guys playing the bass and drums live, and getting a killer performance to build on is the key. Once we get a live jam that I like for it's energy, tightness, and maybe an unplanned jammy excursion, I can build at my leisure. Unless i am playing out of my mind at the session, i throw out the original guitar. We are free to sing and add color and stuff just like a real studio. i can get the guitar solos to be the way i want them....so once I get the actual recording techniques that work best, we can get a serious as we want in making a real honest to god cd that we can be right proud of. Hopefully one that sounds like us. [ Reply to This ]

i have something wrong with my right ear &mdash 01/01/08 - 12:47:20 PM
i need to see the doctor...it sounds like a fluid or something deep in my ear and it is causing distortion in all frequencies...especially live where it is approaching painful...so I am glad to hear it is distortion free on your stuff....although i swear there is a distorted signal coming from the bass drum mic...next session the snare and bass drum are getting their own tracks, and the rest of the kit will be submixed to two tracks....i should be able to hear the bass drum better then.
thanks for the continuing support and encouragement bob....means everything!

Same old same old &mdash 01/02/08 - 06:26:22 PM
Outstanding guitars, arrangement... yada. But man, what a great recording... the drums are absolutely out of this world. Knowing this is recording live makes it that more exciting.
Really can't wait for the March gig, Z. You know it's even better when you can see something like this live! [ Reply to This ]
Yeah, OK ... &mdash 01/02/08 - 06:46:26 PM
... that seemed to work :)
Seriously Fran, excellent recording (the amazing playing is a given). Only suggestions I'd make at this stage is that perhaps the brilliantly clear toms and snare could be toned down just a tad - to let the bass shine a bit more and the rhythm guitar parts could come up a little also. But that's serious nit picking, only mentioned because I know you're in fine tuning mode.
Bloody terrific playing!
Best for 2008! (did that CD get to you yet?)

the live element and fluidity of the rythym section is a great stat. Your leads sound fresh and clean. excellent track [ Reply to This ]
Simply amazing &mdash 01/03/08 - 01:45:52 PM
I know you ask us to check something but I got caught up in to the music very nice. I would love for you guys to play something I wrote my guitar is definitely my weakest link LOL

I think you're capturing all the elements... &mdash 01/05/08 - 03:42:28 PM
...so I don't have any sense of something missing here... I can shift focus from bass to the drums to the guitars and hear everything that I expect to be there, and the recorded tone seems good...
That said, and because I know you are working toward the definitive sound, I would say that there's a wooly quality to the bass as I'm hearing it that I don't think matches what Neil mentions about the very crisp top end of the drums and the cymbals...
I don't think that's anything huge, but it makes the mix sound a little less like one unified thing. I think there probably could be some further mix tweakage that would put everything into perspective.
If it was me, I would probably push the drums back a dB, and I wonder if you can both mic and take a direct on the bass, so that the direct line can bring in the higher end of the bass...
And yeah, you guys sure can play... Some kind of crazy intersection between a Santana jam and Dave Mason's old 'World In Changes'...

Bryan got a new bass! &mdash 01/05/08 - 10:54:39 PM
a cheapie squire fretless that sounds UNREAL!!
We will do all the final recordings of this music with the new baby. The difference is amazing.
Plus the last sessions we did i dedicated tracks the bass drum and snare...yipes...a huge difference there...also followed some of McBoy's positioning tips...more sessions next week!

Juicy &mdash 01/07/08 - 08:27:49 AM
Really juicy! This is one of the greatest productions on the site so far. We're lifting from the ground here. And we're getting latin! Straight tens as mr Atwood would have put it (and who by the way had his 3 year MJ anniversary the same day you posted this song).
And what do I feel about the recording? Very live and "present". Very clear without getting sharp. If I would suggest something it woud be that the drums should get more background of the soundscape. How that is done? I don't know, but right now it sounds like the drums are in front of the guitars.
Special pros:
1) I dig your drummer a lot. Very much my taste of a drummer. Bushy and free.
2) The lead guitar.
3) The acoustic lead guitar.
4) The happy energetic latin feel. [ Reply to This ]

Great Fran &mdash 01/10/08 - 02:12:11 PM
this is the best recording I've heard out of your new setup yet... it sounds excellent... your playing is smokin'... and the clarity of the sounds are makin the Alesis look pretty attractive... I'm not hearing low end distortion, but these old ears aren't the best judge... I will say the drums sound far away... there not to low.. just distant...
your real good at capturing moments.. exiting and passionate.. you don't just play the notes... I always feel like I'm getting to listen to something significant... You always hold my attention all through [ Reply to This ]

Lots &mdash 01/25/08 - 11:22:58 PM
of nice chordal runs, like how it goes down in step fashion. Has a carlos santana feel, but it even gets more interesting, the sounds become mellower as it continues with the electric classical I think it is. The different guitars really blend in nicely and the descending leads and bass sounds going down in step fashion really gives this tune character for sure. But the leads are really holding their own. Drums fit in nicely. Enjoy the complexity of the percussion. Like a well oiled musical samba machine :)

I have not been to visit ziti much and your playing keeps popping up on me(collabs). You have a great way with that ax.
This tune has a live feel that you have captured. The lead stuff layers over the live track nicely.
The rhythm guitar at times does sound like a keyboard is in there, laying down chords in a real cool style.
Great to here real drums.Just great stuff.
You play that live show you were trying to drum up interest for a ways back.
The Globe had a article in Sundays paper about the clubs around the area(Boston) and I thought of you.
check it out.

Just another masterpiece from you Mr. Fran. Great how the sound of the acoustic melted with your great electric playing and those groovy backsounds. Great piece .. Downloaded!
