Keywords:
old skool indie rock (1)
Description:
Here's the story: I play off and on with my friend Scott (he plays drums all over a bunch of my songs), and we recorded this song live on KXLU (the only good station in LA) with a bunch of other songs (we go by Mount St. Helen). I liked how this one turned out, but it was just him on drums and me singing and playing guitar. I asked Bud if he wanted to play on it and he added some guitar tracks, and I added bass and some backup vox.

Since it's live, I wanted to keep the feel and I mixed it very quickly and left in some of the amps buzzing. It's weird to listen to this as I like my voice so much better live than when I sit down to record. And then there's the fact that Bud sounds like he was in the room playing with us. He did a great job (especially considering the fact that my guitar wasn't tuned to anything in particular).

Thanks Bud, you are now an honorary member of Mount St. Helen. I'll let Scott know.

Lyrics:
it seems so right
to lay your head down
lay your head down
but light, and sound
always play tricks on you

i could go to bed
and you could get drunk
i could go to sleep
and you can go home

ha ah ha...

it seems so nice
to lay your head down
lay your head down
but light, and sound
always play tricks on you

i could go to bed
and you could get drunk
i could go to sleep
and you can go home

ha ah ha...

Hardware:
intel mini mac, Musicman 4x10 guitar amp, harmony rocket with flat wound strings, Scott plays an old Gretsch set. not sure what Bud used or what mics the radio station used (but they sure sound better than my vocal set up).

Software:
GB3,iTunes

glad you came by. Bud sounds great huh? he came up with a really odd guitar part that I love.

KXLU is an awesome station. they have a show called demolisten that plays unsigned bands. it's mostly indie and weird stuff. you may be able to listen to them online now. but they're really cool and they play what they like. even when they play horrible stuff and the DJ talks too much, I still love them for the service they provide in LA.

glad you popped by for a listen. Bud gave it that psych feel, I was just playing chords and ripping off Lennon again. He really added something nice to the song.

Live effect works well. I always seem to hear Beatles influence when I listen to your music. Cool combo!!

glad you gave this a listen. i always prefer live over canned (even with the mistakes you end up with), just sounds right to me. as far as the beatles goes, i rarely even listen to them anymore, but can't seem to avoid heading in that direction. thanks again.

This was such a cool tune to start with that the hardest part for me was how to stay out of the way. Oh - and finding the key. Proud to be an honorary Mount St. member - thanks for the opportunity to play with you guys.

karmatoburn. i like putting tra ks over a live bed, although we had some weird tuning issues with this one. if i had known at the time that I'd use the track later, i definitely would have taken a second to make sure my guitar was in tune. glad you liked and thanks a bunch for stopping by.

This is very nice &mdash 01/01/08 - 09:41:37 PM
One of those recordings that really bears repeat listens. It's a really good song, and topped off with a fantastic vocal performance. You have a great voice, Michael, and this song showcases it to perfection. The guitar sounds are great, and - as you mention - it's a seamless join between what you guys did and what Bud added. Beautiful stuff from a talented bunch. Nice work. Happy New Year. Peace.

i don't think it's a conscious decision, things just seem to come out sounding different all of the time. that was a bad thing when I was in bands, but now it's fine; although i do envy guys who seem to have come up with their own sound that flows from song to song; not samey, but you know who it is when you hear it (like you).

Michael &mdash 01/02/08 - 01:42:20 AM
You have such a great sound. You skills come thru each song you post. This has great creativity in all the parts. The droping guitar that travels thru the tune is captivating.
The vocal arrangement (as peacepiano said) Beatles
I'm with peacepiano with his Beatles comment.
I was trying not to go there...but what a complement hmmm.
anyway
nice Mike.
Very good collab....bud, this must have been fun

thanks so much &mdash 01/02/08 - 05:46:40 PM
that beatles thing is hard to escape if you spent enough time with them. it's weird, when I was younger I would consciously try and ape a bands sound, now that i'm older and don't care, the beatles always creep in.thanks for listening and commenting.

Really great &mdash 01/02/08 - 06:53:45 AM
song. You have a fantastic voice.A bit of Lennon but you have your own sound.I've been reading a book by Geoff Emerick about how he recorded the Beatles. It's amazing what they accomplished in such a short time with pretty primitive equipment.Guess it helps when you have two geniuses in your band.
Excellent recording on this-it sounds like it was played all at once.

Live stuff is good stuff, I think. Especially when you have great musicians and the song is good too.

Everything worked well together.

I look forward to more great works from you, throughout 2008.

Take care.

Live sounds aplenty! &mdash 01/02/08 - 09:58:23 AM
Overall sound is extremely powerful; great tune. The low drone is captivating all the way thru - shades of Radiohead or Beatles in a psychy mood.

Big, big sound - wouldn't have known that Bud wasn't at the station with you; well done all!

What a title!

I faved it before I heard it!!!!

Kidding.

Songs like this make me think of Michael Stipe before he was a household name and before he actually sung recognizable words. Great idea to get bud involved in this. You guys share a certain aesthetic that becomes obvious to me the more I hear of both of you.

Keep it up guys,

Bob

Beautifully out of whack in places &mdash 01/02/08 - 07:05:29 PM
So reminiscent of late Beatles (Lennon) stuff. Love your vocal and all the playing sounds excellent. The "interesting" tuning works perfectly.
Have a great 2008!

the best &mdash 01/03/08 - 12:54:16 AM
This song is literally the best thing I have heard on Macjams in weeks. Maybe months. Seriously. I am completely envious of your guitar tone, so rubber-bandy and warm. I, too am amazed Bud wasn't there with you. The vibe is so complete and perfect, I am in awe. Sure the Beatles thing is there, but in one way or another the Beatles thing is everywhere. Just perfect gentlemen.

thanks Racerat &mdash 01/03/08 - 03:46:20 PM
yeah, I guess that's the benefit of using a real amp; too bad that has become a luxury and a serious investment in time. i love that amp, it's basically a Fender Super but it's an old Musicman. I used flat wounds on the Harmony too, makes it more thunkey. Bud came up with some cool sounds using the GB plugins as well (which I never seem to have any luck with). I think he plays a Danelectro. THanks for coming by.

I didn't know you had a beautiful voice, too!

Great sound, bittersweet.

I'm glad you posted this.

And that image is haunting and compelling. The whole thing is a really stop-in-your-tracks moment.

Cool tune &mdash 01/04/08 - 09:14:48 PM
I really dig the vibe of this song. I'm going to come out of left field with this, but it reminds me of the vibe you get from Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata". It's chill and has a great melody, but it almost makes you double over in anxiety... Which is, to say, this is a really powerful performance. Those guitar chops are from outer space! I love it!

Great &mdash 01/05/08 - 12:02:26 AM
Vocal and guitar collaboration. A little Wilco feel to this one, a la Being There. Glad to hear Brother Bud doing more left coast work.

This is a great song and performance. Reminds me of a songwriter I dig a lot, David Poe.

You have mastered the art of capturing moments in song. This is a prime example. These lyrics couldn't have gone to anything else, nor could other words have been so perfectly penned for this tune.
Top drawer old chap.

Didn't Put Me to Sleep &mdash 03/23/08 - 09:23:13 PM
Great song, M2. Lyrics are very good and production is excellent. Your voice is also a winner and the harmonies were well done.

It had a great feel so I don't care about buzzing amps or out of whack guitars. Had a George Harrison "Isn't it a Pity" kind of chord progression and a Beck feel to it.

Good One.

wow, that's really cool of you to go searching through the archives. i'm with you on not caring about buzzing amps. and you know I love Beck and George Harrison, so I will take that as a supreme compliment. thanks again for stopping by and listening to this one.
