a Moorlandt old school one (somewhere daunting/creepy and bitter sweet).

'a moorlandt old school', haha... I love that. Makes me feel like an old rocker:-) Hmmm... perhaps I am. Thanks maatje.

Exactly what I intent to do with it: put it as a short intermezzo on my next album. Thanks for your sweet comment, Michael. Cherished.

Small song = big impact &mdash 01/01/08 - 05:31:39 PM
It may be a short song but the lyrics say such a lot, and with such skillful economy of language. Simple and direct really is the way to go sometimes. You make a great impact here with the contrast between the unsettled piano and your rich and resonant voice, allowing them both to fill their own space.

Thanks so much for the lovely comment. 'The economy of words'... what a great expression. Thanks again, Rebsie...

Wow, what an honour to be compared with Floyd:-) A movie opener? Hmm... never thought of that in fact. Thanks for the listen and the compliments. Much appreciated.

Yes, very short... &mdash 01/01/08 - 06:08:11 PM
but very lovely and moving. Excellent piano, and as always your vocal uniquely shines.

Awesome! &mdash 01/01/08 - 06:41:19 PM
Sometimes less is more, Walter. You always do such wonderfully moody and provoking pieces. You have a great style about your music that is uniquely yours and instantly recognisable. Great job, Walter! I always love coming by, as time permits, to listen to your latest offering to us here at MJ. Be well, my friend!

Well, this is just a small, short and simple piece. In fact I even doubted to post it on MJ. But I'm very positively surprised about the many responses... And again, we sure have to do a new collab in the near future, Richard. You can't believe the amount of great reactions I've heard (outside of MJ) on 'She comes in black'.

I agree with all that has been commented so far.

Such a rich low note you reach in this song and sweet upper notes, too.

Very evocative piece.

estella &mdash 01/03/08 - 02:36:52 PM
As I mentioned previously in one of the counter comments, this is just a little intermezzo piece. Well, it rather turned out that way, as I initially intent to make it a full song. But I was just 'out of words' and had really nothing more to say:-)
Thanks so much again for lending your ear to it, Estella!

short and sweet &mdash 01/01/08 - 08:33:09 PM
I like the starkness of just piano and vocal. simple, compact and direct.

A couple of those low notes you hit practically shook some windows.
If they do break when I play this, I'm sending you a bill for repairs. :-)

LOL, I know one can insure his voice, but I'm not sure if you can be insured for the impact of your voice on domestic accidents:-) Guess I'll have to re-read the MJ terms of agreement...
Thanks so much again for the listen, Vic.

nope, not short... &mdash 01/01/08 - 09:16:15 PM
perfectly balanced (or unbalanced, in this case)... poetic, concise, vague, powerful, longing... the music and words seem to capture all the harsh light of regret in the room and focus it on this little spot. The hint of hesitation in your voice speaks volumes.
Excellent work here, Walter.

Outstanding work &mdash 01/01/08 - 09:56:41 PM
Your vocal is perfect - expressive and rich. The music is almost melancholy, and dark, but works so well with the lyrics. This couldn't be better if it were a bar longer. Nicely done. Peace, and a Happy New Year.

It is short .. &mdash 01/02/08 - 12:20:47 AM

.. but not too short. It's meant to be a short and as such it is balanced .. at the 'most' it could be extended a fraction by returning to just piano for a short little outro that fades (if this really, really needed to be a fraction longer) but I like it just as it is.

Some of the changes reminded me (with being piano too) of the John Carpenter Halloween theme .. but that might just be me... I was expecting the deep cello to come in ;o) but what really makes this special is the space and vocal delivery.

Kudos.

Thanks again for your very thoughtful comment. Yes, perhaps you're right about this little piano outro... I can hear exactly what you mean.
Help... a Halloween comparison :-) I know, it's the low notes in the vocals. I try so much not too sound 'dark'... haha
Thanks again, Alan. Always a pleasure to see you popping in.

It's amusing to see how low frequency singing always gets associated with dark and mysterious. That was not quite my intention, but it's good that you point this out. I just wanted it to sound emotive and from the soul. Perhaps I should better have pitched my voice slightly.
Thanks so much for popping in, Bill. Very very much appreciated.

Dark and sparse... &mdash 01/07/08 - 01:22:50 PM
A marvellously disturbing interlude. Urgent. Needy. Honest.

When I first observed how fast the timer button was moving along the track I thought: "Oh crap! This is gonna be way too short." I was wrong. It's just right. The sudden finish underscores the urgency/desperation of this tune.

Well done Walter!

Happy New Year! I'm only 4 months late! I guess I missed a lot of great music while I was away from this site! I'm working my way backwards through the different treatments of this song, and really, each is exquisite in it's own way, and every voice (Estrella's, Allanah's, and yours) are absolutely perfect for this sultry, haunting song. What a great idea!
