Description:
A new year and a new tune.

Will sent these lyrics along before the holidays. As always - they inspired me to get to work. I made a very produced version that I scrapped and went back to basics - trying to keep things simple and stay out of the way of this story.
Percussion and pedal steel are loops - the rest I played.

Lyrics:
Standing right in front of me
Shaking from the cold
Just released from county jail
I’ve come to take you home

Hunched inside a dark t-shirt
Your shoulders thin and pale
Loose jeans hanging from your hips
Your body tells the tale

Love is all I think of
Love words can’t impart
Love that blinds like sunlight
Love that breaks your heart

Your eyes are dark and tired
Filled with fear and sorrow
Hands shoved in your pockets
Your voice is weak and hollow

You put your arms around me
I love you dad, you sigh,
I’m just a fiend for everything
We both begin to cry

I’m so cold you shiver
Here take my leather coat
Your girl steps from the shadows
We walk back to the car

Now you’re in the back seat
Curled up with your girl
Soon it gets real quiet
I know you’re both asleep

Driving Highway 101
From Salinas to San Luis
Beneath the silver full moon light
On the Winter Solstice

Ghostly fields and shadowed hills
Stretching east and west
Just my thoughts for company
In the midnight emptiness.

Love is all I think of
Love words can’t impart
Love that blinds like sunlight
Love that breaks your heart

Will came up with a great story here.
I think you did the right thing. Just a simple setup and let the story dominate.

The pedal loop really does fit in nicely.

happy 2008

First on the first &mdash 01/02/08 - 08:24:00 AM
gotta be some special prize for that. Thanks for dropping by Vic. Will wrote a strong one here - coulda posted it without any music at all. Glad you liked the steel - I'm a bit ambivalent about using a loop on a tune like this - but it fit the mood and I don't have one.

Definitely the right treatment Bud. Awesome story(as usual), somewhat dark and draws me in. I was motivated to play along; very cool. Great vocal.

Lay it down and send it in - maybe a remix. Thanks for stopping by.

I'm amazed... &mdash 01/01/08 - 09:21:50 PM
...by how you switched gears on this song from the first version. Much better fit now between the lyrics and the music. The pedal steel is inspired and the vocal is down but not too draggy. This version definitely captures the "midnight emptiness" of the long ride home. Thanks for the empathy.

oooof! &mdash 01/01/08 - 09:23:33 PM
Nicely-written lyrics, played simply and and out-front, as it should be... story sure puts a knot in this dad's stomach... crossing my fingers to get my two teens through these tough times, without being too blinded.

in 10 more months my younger brother comes out of prison after 7 years I think i will play him this song. there is so much that can break a heart. thanks for this song it touched me and that means alot!!!!

[ Reply to This ]
It means &mdash 01/01/08 - 10:07:51 PM
a lot to me that you would save this song for your brother. Most of the stories I tell in my lyrics are based on real experience, and this one is no exception. In fact, it's "realer" than I would like it to be. It was a rough night, but where there's love there's hope.

Great way to start off the new year &mdash 01/01/08 - 09:27:54 PM
This is one of those great songs that you just sit back and let unfold before you like a good movie. Great lyrics, with wonderful imagery (from the sad and sharp "a fiend for everything" to the evocative "ghostly fields and shadowed hills") and a great story. I don't know what the previous version sounded like, but I have to say I find it hard to imagine this any other way. Sounds perfect to me - especially the little touches of organ and that sweet steel guitar. This is a great song. Nice work to both of you. Nice work. Peace.

Great ballad Bud. The lyrics are direct and insightful. The organ and the slide really give this tune it's vibe and atmosphere. Your voice sounds really great on this, particularly the harmonies, really well placed and tasty.

I also like the directness of Will's writing - it forces me to keep it simple and find the right vocal inflection.

I'll think of this.... What?

Beautiful heart felt story and well performed. Bud, your vocals are rich with emotion and the harmonies are the best.

How you made that slide fit so perfectly just amazes me. This is the third hit I've heard this year on our site and I've only listened to 3! What a way to start the year. I can't wait to see what's next.

this is great &mdash 01/02/08 - 12:35:31 PM
the music: perfect for the lyrics and the sentiment. the pedal steel really fits in well, did you change the notes in that loop or just get lucky? your voice is awesome in here, fits perfectly. deadpan yet full of emotion. the verses of this one almost remind of Galaxy 500 and the American Music Club and I think your voice may be why. really great job guys.

Thanks Michael - &mdash 01/02/08 - 03:47:57 PM
you sing so well - a compliment from you is really high praise in my book. I got lucky with the pedal steel - no pencil just some cutting and pasting to get them to fit.

Early seventies country rock... &mdash 01/03/08 - 06:22:48 AM
ala Neil Young. A heartfelt story wrapped in a warm guiar/organ backdrop. The pedal does give the cry of the heart feel as you sing and matter of factly tell the tale.

Choice tune, bud... many kudos.

I wish I could play steel like that. It's been a year now that Will and I have been working together - funny it took so long to get started - but I owe it to MJ. His lyrics help me find my comfort zone.

Another great song from Will.. &mdash 01/03/08 - 11:00:41 PM
...Lyrics/story makes complete sense and there are some beautiful images there...The arrangement fits perfectly, especially the bent guitar licks...a real pedal steel would be wonderful...maybe some day...(vocal pitch is iffy now and then, but easy enough to fix with a little more breath support. Sorry for the negative, but, well, it's important.) This is such a comfortable song and now I have listened to it three times and it just sticks in my head.
Peace.

Not much left to say .. &mdash 01/04/08 - 03:30:32 PM
.. other than "I agree" and enjoyed this alot. Really fine heartfelt song. The theme/concept/lyrics and delivery is what stands out most for me. Arrangement is sweet, nice attention to little variations throughout. Slight REM feel about this one in some pop/country elements..."man on the moon"

I'd like the chorus (which is great and mellow feel) to be a bit 'bigger' somehow (my taste).. so it falls back a bit more to the verses ..perhaps like Snow Patrol's "Run" or something... I hear it wanting to go that way feel wise because of the perc. picking up the pace at the chorus and then dropping back to slower pace afterwards.

A small observation in an already excellent song.

Happy New Year Bud.

Cheers to you as well! &mdash 01/05/08 - 07:44:25 PM
Nice of you to stop by. I think you're right about the chorus - it could either be a little bigger or have more space around it - it's definitely the soul of the piece. Thanks for the comment.

I know that kind of love... &mdash 01/06/08 - 03:59:12 PM
And if this was half as well done as it is, I'd still listen to it because of that.

This is a great song. Nice Neil Young-ish rhythm guitar bed. Touch of John Cale in the vocal.

The lyrics are astonishingly perfect. "I'm just a fiend for everything" is great. The chorus is great.

That little bit of organ is also just right.
